The shared bun value becomes a minimum instead of an exact pin.

  • The repository's Bun is its root packageManager release when that is an exact release at or above the shared value; otherwise the check falls back to the shared value and reports the existing bun-pins diagnostic.
  • checkToolchain and the cloud setup generator derive one effective policy from that release, so nested manifests, bun-types, setup-bun selectors, Bun images, version files and mise/asdf entries must all equal the repository's pin.
  • The typecheck parity runtime check accepts an exact release at or above the minimum.
  • A repository can therefore move to a newer Bun on its own, without a policy release and a config bump everywhere.

Tests: unit tests for the repository Bun and the runtime floor, and the CLI test now passes a later exact release while an older one still fails.

A repository pins one exact Bun release at or above the shared value in its root packageManager, and every other Bun reference must equal that release, so a repository can take a newer Bun without a policy release.

📝 Walkthrough

The shared Bun version is now a minimum. Tooling selects a valid exact Bun pin from the repository root when it meets that minimum, and uses the minimum otherwise. Toolchain checks and cloud setup use the derived version.

Changes: Bun version policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define the Bun minimum contract
.changeset/bun-floor.md, README.md, packages/oxlint-config/README.md
The shared Bun value is documented as a minimum. Repository references must match one exact root pin at or above it.

repositoryBun selects a valid root Bun pin at or above the floor, or falls back to the floor. satisfiesBunFloor checks whether a version meets the floor. Tests cover both functions.
Apply the derived Bun version

Toolchain checks and cloud setup use a Bun value derived from the root manifest. Version checking accepts releases at or above the minimum. The diagnostic and CLI test reflect this policy.

  • stella/tooling#202: Pins Bun in the shared toolchain and root packageManager; this PR defines the shared value as a minimum and derives the effective version from the root pin.
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e9025

The Bun minimum check accepts prerelease Bun versions that the new tests say must be rejected, so the test suite would fail and prerelease pins could be selected as the repository policy. A missing root Bun pin can also go unreported in some repository setups. Fix the prerelease handling before merging.

- Line 23: Update both Bun floor predicates using gte(version, floor) to reject
versions with a prerelease component before comparing them against the floor, so
prerelease versions such as 1.4.5-canary.1 are not accepted.

Review comments at @packages/oxlint-config/src/toolchain-guard.ts:
- Line 263: Add an unconditional root Bun pin check in the toolchain validation
flow once Bun usage is established, so a missing root packageManager produces a
bun-pins diagnostic even when no workflow references the root manifest. Keep the
existing workflow-based validation and package-file checks unchanged.
