feat(claude): Ultracode is its own toggle at any reasoning level - #20987
Since Claude Code 2.1.284, Ultracode is its own session toggle: it "no longer forces xhigh effort and stays on at any effort level". T3 still offers Ultracode as a choice in the Claude Reasoning picker, and the manifest maps it to xhigh. Picking it always runs at xhigh, and picking any other effort turns Ultracode off. Max + Ultracode, or High/Medium + Ultracode, can't be selected.
To reproduce: on Claude Opus 5.5, pick Reasoning → Ultracode. T3 starts Claude Code with effort: "xhigh" and settings.ultracode: true.
Change
Server catalog (ClaudeModelCatalog.ts):withUltracodeToggle lifts the manifest's ultracode effort choice out of the effort select and into a boolean ultracode option, placed right after effort. The remote manifest is read by every installed release, and older releases only understand Ultracode as an effort choice. So the manifest keeps its current shape, and the split happens when the server builds catalog models. Custom models are left as authored; their capabilities come from user settings, not the manifest.
Chat and text generation (claudeModelOptions.ts, ClaudeTextGeneration.ts): read the boolean and send settings.ultracode: true alongside whichever effort is selected. isClaudeCatalogUltracodeEffort is removed. Mid-session changes already send ultracode and effortLevel as separate keys through claudeLiveSelectionFlagSettings; its test now covers Max + Ultracode.
Traits picker (TraitsPicker.tsx, client-runtime/modelTraits.ts): web boolean groups show their description. The shared trigger label names Ultracode only while it's on (Max · Ultracode), on web and mobile. Mobile already renders boolean options as switches.
Saved threads with effort: "ultracode" keep running at xhigh with Ultracode on: getProviderOptionDescriptors reads that value as xhigh plus the toggle, so the UI and server agree without a migration.
Scope and approval
This is a product-behavior change, proposed in the Ideas discussion #14631 ("Support an independent Ultracode toggle at any Claude effort level"). That discussion doesn't have a maintainer decision yet. I'm happy to change the approach or close this.
Verification
Focused tests, after rebasing on main at c5332bf: vp test run on ClaudeModelCatalog.test.ts, claudeModelOptions.test.ts, ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts, ClaudeTextGeneration.test.ts (234 passed), client-runtime/modelTraits.test.ts (1 passed), and mobile thread-settings-options.test.ts + modelOptions.test.ts (33 passed). New tests cover:
the manifest's Ultracode choice becoming a boolean option;
a saved effort: "ultracode" compiling to xhigh with Ultracode on;
Max + Ultracode compiling to { effort: "max", settings: { ultracode: true } };
models without Ultracode ignoring the flag;
the trigger label.
tsc --noEmit is clean for server, web, mobile and client-runtime. vp lint and vp fmt --check are clean.

I didn't run a real Claude turn to confirm Claude Code applies Ultracode at Max end to end. The tests check the options T3 sends.
Claude Code before 2.1.284 still switches to xhigh whenever Ultracode is on, so there the picker keeps Ultracode as a Reasoning choice, as before this PR (resolveClaudeModelsForVersion). Opus 5.5 is offered from 2.1.280, so that range is reachable. I didn't run those CLI versions; a test covers both shapes at 2.1.283 and 2.1.284.

Claude catalog capabilities expose eligible Ultracode choices as a separate boolean option. Shared selection logic migrates saved Ultracode effort values. Server settings, delegated selections, and client displays use the boolean option separately from effort.

Catalog capability and version handling apps/server/src/provider/ClaudeModelCatalog.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ClaudeModelCatalog.test.ts
Eligible catalog models expose Ultracode as a boolean option. Versions below 2.1.284 use the original manifest capabilities. Tests check capability conversion and effort resolution.
When a saved Ultracode effort is used with a separate Ultracode option, the selection resolves to xhigh effort and enables the toggle when available. Legacy descriptors that retain the Ultracode effort choice preserve it.

Reviewed head 74c7571. The independent toggle looks sound, including the mobile path, but I would fix the saved-selection compatibility issue before merging.
P2: Preserve existing Ultracode selections. As noted in the description, removing ultracode from the effort choices makes saved selections fall back to the model default with Ultracode off. I reproduced this with compileClaudeModelSelection for claude-opus-5-5: options: [{ id: "effort", value: "ultracode" }] now produces effort: "medium" and no settings.ultracode. Previously this meant xhigh with Ultracode enabled, so upgrading silently changes both settings for existing threads.
Please normalize legacy selections to effort: "xhigh" plus ultracode: true, with matching client display, and add a regression test preserving that behavior. This could be handled when reading selections rather than requiring a database migration.
Verification: all 268 focused tests passed across the catalog, selection compiler, adapter, text generation, shared trait label, and mobile option suites. Mobile already renders boolean descriptors as switches and uses the updated shared summary label. I did not run device UI verification or a real Claude turn.
Review performed with GPT-6.1-Sol via the Codex harness in T3 Code.
Thanks, fixed in 636f5d2. getProviderOptionDescriptors now reads a saved effort: "ultracode" as xhigh with the Ultracode toggle on, and compileClaudeModelSelection takes Ultracode from those descriptors, so the server and the picker (web and mobile) agree. It's done on read, with no migration. An explicit ultracode selection still wins, and models whose effort select still lists ultracode (custom models) are left alone.
Regression tests: compileClaudeModelSelection for claude-opus-5-5 with effort: "ultracode" gives { effort: "xhigh", settings: { ultracode: true } }, and adding ultracode: false keeps xhigh with Ultracode off. A shared descriptor test checks what the picker shows.

Apply the CLI version gate at the chat boundary.
When a saved selection contains ultracode: true and the configured Claude CLI is older than 2.1.284, chat still calls compileClaudeModelSelection with BUNDLED_CLAUDE_MODEL_CATALOG. The provider’s filtered catalog does not reach this call. The compiler therefore emits settings.ultracode: true, and Claude Code can use xhigh even when the saved effort is different.
Pass the version-filtered catalog into compilation, or remove ultracode before the SDK query for older configured CLIs. Upgrading the SDK does not correct this application-side selection flow.

Not changing this one. Below 2.1.284 the picker shows the manifest's Ultracode effort choice, with no toggle, so the only way to get ultracode: true there is a saved effort: "ultracode". That compiles to xhigh with Ultracode on, which is exactly what those CLIs run. A stale ultracode: true next to another effort only happens if someone picked it on 2.1.284+ and then downgraded the CLI. That's a known edge case I'm leaving out of this PR, since in that state the CLI forcing xhigh is how Ultracode worked there anyway.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@neeerp Understood. The legacy effort: "ultracode" path intentionally uses xhigh with Ultracode enabled. The concern is limited to a stale independent toggle after a CLI downgrade. I accept leaving that edge case outside this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for the downgrade case?

Learning: In the Claude model catalog, only models without effort support, such as Haiku 4.5, compile to no effort through compileClaudeModelSelection in apps/server/src/claudeModelOptions.ts (TypeScript). Ultrathink compiles to the model default effort, not undefined effort.
When a supported model has Ultracode explicitly disabled, currentValue is false, but this branch omits the key. Claude Code keeps omitted settings from settings.json, so a user setting of ultracode: true remains active during text generation.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff note about ClaudeTextGeneration.ts:171-177 (sending ultracode: false for text generation): leaving it out of this PR. Title and PR text generation already behaved this way on main, where the same block was ...(ultracode ? { ultracode: true } : {}). The fastMode line right next to it treats Off the same way (...(fastMode ? { fastMode: true } : {})). Changing that is a convention change for the whole text-generation settings block, so it fits better in a separate follow-up than here. This PR covers chat turns, where Off is now sent explicitly as of ba9d7b9.
We run this branch in our fork, rebased on nightly 3770, and Medium + Ultracode works end to end. Claude Code starts with --effort medium and settings.ultracode: true, and the agent gets the Ultracode reminder. A saved effort: "ultracode" thread still runs at xhigh with Ultracode on.
Two places still read the old effort value directly, so they miss the saved-selection handling in getProviderOptionDescriptors:
MCP task options. OrchestratorMcpService checks target.options against the descriptors before it merges them. An agent that passes { id: "effort", value: "ultracode" } now gets "must be one of: low, medium, ...". A child that inherits a parent's saved effort: "ultracode" and overrides only the effort loses Ultracode silently. Converting the requested and inherited options with the same legacy helper before the check and the merge fixes both.
The thread effort label. formatModelSelectionEffort in client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.ts reads the stated value, so a saved effort: "ultracode" thread shows no effort label. With the same conversion it shows Extra High.
Happy to send these as a follow-up after this lands, or you can fold them in. The code is small: export the legacy-effort helper and call it in those two places.
@aneym Thanks for running it end to end, and for finding both. Fixed in 79ca042:
OrchestratorMcpService passes the requested and inherited options through withLegacyUltracodeEffort (now exported from @t3tools/shared/model) before it validates and merges them. An agent's effort: "ultracode" becomes xhigh with Ultracode on instead of being rejected, and a child that inherits it and overrides only effort keeps Ultracode.
formatModelSelectionEffort converts the selection the same way, so those threads show Extra High.

@coderabbitai Thanks, good catch on "Preserve Ultracode for custom models in text generation" (review 5702619476). Fixed in 28b264d.
Custom models keep their raw capabilities, so they can still list Ultracode as an effort choice with no toggle. When there's no boolean descriptor, the effort now turns Ultracode on again, matching the old isClaudeCatalogUltracodeEffort behavior. Chat (compileClaudeModelSelection) had the same regression, so it's fixed there too. The boolean toggle still takes precedence, so an explicit Off is still sent as ultracode: false in chat. There's one new test per path, and each fails without the fix.
@neeerp Thanks. I inspected 28b264de9c. Both paths now enable Ultracode from the resolved effort when no boolean descriptor exists. The boolean descriptor still takes precedence, and chat still sends explicit Off as ultracode: false.
The commit adds one custom-model regression test per path. I did not run the tests. The code change addresses the reported regression.

Claude Code 2.1.284 turned Ultracode into a session toggle that no longer
forces xhigh effort. T3 still offered it as a Reasoning choice mapped to
xhigh, so Max + Ultracode or High + Ultracode could not be selected.
The remote model manifest is read by every installed release, and older
releases only understand Ultracode as an effort choice, so the manifest
keeps that shape. The Claude catalog now lifts the manifest's "ultracode"
effort choice into a boolean `ultracode` option, and chat and text
generation send `settings.ultracode` from that toggle alongside whichever
effort is selected. The web traits picker shows the option's description
and names Ultracode in the trigger label only while it is on.
Before 2.1.284, Claude Code switches to xhigh whenever Ultracode is on,
so the toggle would show Max · Ultracode while running at xhigh. Opus
5.5 is offered from 2.1.280, so this range is reachable.
…code on
Threads saved while Ultracode was an effort choice fell back to the
model's default effort with Ultracode off. Read effort "ultracode" as
xhigh plus the Ultracode toggle wherever descriptors are built, so the
server and the picker agree, unless the selection sets Ultracode itself.
…g choice
Hiding the toggle there took Ultracode away from those users. They get the
manifest's original effort choice back, which the server already compiles
to xhigh with Ultracode on.
Web and mobile kept only the option ids a selection saved, so a saved
effort "ultracode" dispatched as xhigh without Ultracode. An Off toggle
also sent nothing, leaving Ultracode from the user's settings.json on.
Models with the toggle now always send it, like Fast Mode.
… effort
Delegated task options and the thread effort label read effort directly,
so a saved effort "ultracode" was rejected for agents, dropped Ultracode
when a child overrode only effort, and showed no label. Both now apply the
same legacy reading as the picker: xhigh with Ultracode on.
Custom models keep their own capabilities, so they can still offer
Ultracode as an effort choice with no toggle. Chat and text generation
only read the toggle, so picking that effort dropped Ultracode. With no
toggle they now turn it on from the effort, as before.
