Make the lane tools look inside a triad's legs and paired feature trees, so the sweep, lane-end's gate, lane-handoff, lane-reconcile and the daily report can see a lane's work there, and change nothing a checkout with no project.yaml does - #246

Part of #186

T018 of specs/004-migrate-to-triad/tasks.md, slice (d2): the lane tooling's side of the assembly/spec/code split of opensoft/openRepoTools. Lane openRepoTools-3 opens this PR. Lane openRepoTools-1 lands it (#186, 6240800023: "Lane 1 owns the landing"), and Amendment 23's act 2 rebases onto it (see Landing).

Head 3d0642c: 28 commits on main f5c3bcd, 10 files, +4451/-22: the code and docs end at 88ee9d9, and 3d0642c is the empty commit that records the run. Seven subjects are marked WIP (untested): checkpoints taken for account swaps. The squash message replaces them. Verification on the head's tree (88ee9d9, tree 07fa62ee): 224 passed, 1 failed, 1 deselected, in 1:07:25, from lane 3's log t018-verify-20261018T034203Z.log, recorded in 3d0642c. The one failure is main's own: condition 3 below.

The commits, by theme (28 in all: 21 non-merge and 7 merges, six of them of main and one of writer 2's branch):

  • The analysis and its dated notes: c45a452, 96da9af, 941330a, 6658396, 9a8f175 (lane 1's rulings in §7), a60cf1c (bench-root paths).
  • (a) The legs reader, the sweep and lane-end's gate: 2aa8a59, 5fcdf6a, 8e2227e.
  • (c) The daily report: 30f9dc0, and a4e0b17, the fix for the measurement's Finding 1.
  • (d) lane-worktrees add: 13cb52d, 9991d69.
  • (b) lane-handoff and lane-reconcile: 4e39854 and 9a5bbe2, merged from writer 2's branch at e153361; guidance b71e547.
  • The pre-PR review's fixes, with lane 1's M1 ruling (a): 4d4957d.
  • The unreadable-leg gap, and the 10-17 review's fixes: 9f23a6b, bf2a220, 5d2c1c8.
  • Merges of main: 8cb1368 (f87fd5a), 7757eaa (aaa7bc8), cf7db4a (2732d59), 107958c (83d2690), 69f0017 (f595e44), 88ee9d9 (f5c3bcd, main's head today).

Lane 1's five conditions to open this PR (#186, 6240800023, item 4)

# Condition How the branch meets it Status
1 main aaa7bc8 is merged in 7757eaa (git merge-base --is-ancestor aaa7bc8 HEAD is true). Main has been merged four times since (cf7db4a, 107958c, 69f0017, 88ee9d9), so the branch holds main's head, f5c3bcd met
2 The lane-reconcile gap (a leg whose .git git cannot read) is fixed 9f23a6b: a TREE ... unreadable row that requires recovery, in the sweep's words (lanes-edit.sh:13191), with test_t018_reconcile_reports_a_leg_git_cannot_read_as_the_sweep_counts_it (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py:448). The same gap in lane-handoff is bf2a220 (test_t018_the_handoff_reports_a_leg_git_cannot_read_as_the_sweep_counts_it, :503), and the 10-17 review's fixes to both are 5d2c1c8 (Review, below). Both tests passed in the run on the head's tree (t018-verify-20261018T034203Z.log) met
3 The shell-suite failure is fixed by #215 or shown to be main's own #215 (61a7378) is on main and in the branch since 69f0017, and the case it targeted (repoA11b, read at a short fixed path, tests/test_lane_helpers.sh:5360) passes at the head. Two other cases of the same #180 group still fail on a long local run root: repoA's clause (c) tail and repoCase's real directory name. lane-start's cut_to_line caps the state line at 230 characters, so with a run root of about 110 characters the ; dir …; window … tail is cut: the two got strings keep exactly 224 and 119 characters. git diff origin/main...HEAD is empty for lane-start and for the shell suite, and T018's lanes-edit.sh hunks never touch the row stamp. Lane 2 measured the same group failing on main itself at a TMPDIR of 86 characters (#233, 6244714538), and CI, with its short run root, passes them shown to be main's own, by derivation: not re-measured on main at the same run-root length, because the two cases run only inside the hour-long shell suite
4 Item 3's measurement is in the body "Measurement", below met; run on 9a8f175 against main 83d2690, not re-run on the head (see its Tool shas)
5 Items 1 and 2's rulings are recorded in the body and in §7 In §7 of the analysis by 9a8f175 (items 3, 11 and a new 12), with the two README sentences that called them pending. In the body: "Lane 1's rulings", below met

Lane 1's landing gate also asked for "Copilot's two rounds". Copilot review cannot be requested in this repository, and has reviewed nothing since #191 on 10-10 (#186, 6242560541 item 5: "Lane 1's PRs gate on an independent review plus Linux CI"), so the gate here is the Linux tests job and the independent review lane 1 arranges.

Lane 1's rulings, as the branch carries them (analysis §7, items 3, 11 and 12)

All three are from #186 comment 6240800023 (2026-10-17T20:48Z), answering lane 3's 6240688657.

  • §7 item 12, the paired root in lane-handoff (the pre-PR review's M1): ruled (a), as implemented in 4d4957d, with the two-lane regression test (test_t018_a_handoff_takes_no_other_lanes_paired_tree, tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py:258).
    • The handoff polls and records a paired tree only when this lane's inventory names it, its HEAD's last Lane: trailer is this lane's on a commit origin's default branch lacks, or the lane's writers file names it.
    • Every other paired tree is printed as PAIRED ROOT, not this lane's, and is not counted or recorded.
    • Lane 1's reason: recording everything is the misattribution .claude/worktrees already causes in this cwd, where on 10-11 six other lanes' trees went into lane 1's inventory that way. Option (b), recording every paired tree as the running lane's, is not taken.
  • §7 item 11, parked paired trees: ruled (ii), plus resume recording the tree.
    • Park's WIP commit carries a Lane: <lane> trailer, so attribution stays on one contract, the trailer, and lane-worktrees is not coupled to a workBenches subject format.
    • resume records the tree it rebuilds with lanes-edit.sh set-lane-tree <lane> <path> --checkout <assembly>/<leg>.
    • Both are workBenches changes, filed as one issue: opensoft/workBenches#166. This PR does not wait for it. Until it lands, docs/README-lanes.md:4021-4040 says what to check before lane-end, and no attribution code changes here.
  • §7 item 3, what goes live at install. Proposal 1, the guidance (lane-worktrees add <lane> <slice> --checkout <assembly>/code, part (d)), goes live now. Proposals 2 and 3, the sweep, lane-end's gate, the handoff poll, lane-reconcile's TREE rows and the daily report, go live with this PR on one condition: the read-only before/after measurement over every triad on this workstation, in this body, with any verdict that flips to a refusal told to its owning lane before the landing.

The other §7 items (1, 2 and 4 to 10) are not asked here and not taken here; the analysis lists them.

What changes

A checkout is an assembly when its own project.yaml declares a leg other than itself (the standard's rule, as lane-start's rung 5 reads it). Its legs are submodules, so their .git is a file, and a feature's trees under <assembly>/worktrees/<feature>/{spec,code} are worktrees of the legs' repositories. git -C <assembly> worktree list names none of them, so the sweep, lane-end's gate, lane-handoff's poll and the daily report never saw one: a lane with unpushed work in a paired code tree passed lane-end (docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.3 and §4.4). Each tool now reads them, only where the checkout is an assembly.

The shared reader: lanes-edit.sh project-legs <checkout> (lanes-edit.sh:17234)

(a) The sweep and lane-end's gate

lane-worktrees sweep <lane> (project_legs at lane-worktrees:2014, probe_leg at :2035):

  • leg rows. One per leg, and one per initialized submodule nested in a leg (code/upstream/openRepoShape in the adopted layout). Dispositions: clean, dirty, unpushed, dirty+unpushed, absent (not checked out; claims no tree of the assembly), unreadable. The table gains a LEGS section and a N leg checkout(s), M counted suffix on SUMMARY. Porcelain gains leg <disposition> <retire|-> <path> <branch> <head> <why>.
  • Counted only on the lane's own word. A leg is retire where its HEAD's own Lane: trailer is this lane's and it holds dirty or untracked paths or a HEAD no origin ref holds, or where it could not be read. A counted leg makes the dry run exit 3. Any other leg that holds work is listed and counted for nobody, as the assembly's own checkout is. No --yes acts on a leg checkout. A leg's branches are items under --branches, and --yes acts on those as it does in the checkout, bundling first any commits only the reflog names.
  • Registrations. The worktrees git registers in every checked-out leg are read. One that no inventory record names is a FOREIGN row naming its leg. One recorded with the leg as its checkout is the lane's, like any recorded tree.
  • The paired root. <assembly>/worktrees is a root. A tree in it that the inventory does not record is the lane's by its HEAD's own Lane: trailer and by nothing else (lane-worktrees:2427-2434), because the root is per feature and not per lane, as .claude/worktrees is. A standalone clone there is FOREIGN. A root, feature directory or leg directory that cannot be listed or searched refuses, exit 2, as does a leg's nested dependency that cannot be listed.
  • Refusal. A manifest, or a leg's own submodule list, that cannot be read refuses with exit 2: the legs of the assembly <dir> could not be read.

lane-end <lane> runs the same sweep, and its gate (lane-end:1978, :2100, :2125-2183) reads the leg rows. A counted leg is a leg checkout(s) part of the tally, and its remedy is a person's: commit and push from inside it, with no --yes offered where legs are all that was counted. A leg that holds work and is not this lane's is listed as NOT counted, whether the gate passes or refuses. The gate's exits are unchanged, and --inventory-only is still the one way past.

(b) lane-handoff and lane-reconcile

lane-handoff:

  • Polls the paired root by the sweep's rule (item 12 above). Trees it polls are in WRITERS and the count; every other .git-bearing tree there is one PAIRED ROOT, not this lane's line in the top block.
  • Records each polled tree under its leg. A tree whose repository shares its common git directory with a checked-out leg is filed, through set-lane-tree --checkout <leg>, under that leg. A tree the inventory already records under a checkout of its own repository (a dependency nested in a leg) keeps it. Any other tree keeps the lane's dir. A leg that is not checked out names no tree.
  • Says what it could not look at. A paired root, feature directory or leg directory it cannot list or search, and an inventory it cannot read, are a - NOT POLLED line, a stderr note and a lane left SWAPPING, as lane-reconcile is indeterminate and the sweep refuses for the same directories. On a project.yaml it cannot read it still exits 0 (R-A11-11), polls no paired root, files no sidecar for a tree that is not of the lane's own repository, and leaves the lane SWAPPING.
  • An unreadable leg (a .git git cannot read) is one - UNREADABLE LEG: line in WRITERS, a stderr note and a count on stderr's legs: N ... line. The lane is not held SWAPPING for the leg itself. A tree that could belong to it is named (NOT recorded), so the checkout add recorded stays and the lane stays SWAPPING for that tree; a tree git cannot read at all is named and counted the same way; a tree of any other repository keeps the lane's dir, as when every leg reads (lane-handoff:1932-2015, :2252-2296, :2476-2482; Review, below).

lanes-edit.sh lane-reconcile <lane>:

  • Reads each checked-out leg's git worktree list --porcelain. A registration no sidecar names is a TREE row, unmanaged, or stale-registration where its directory is gone, and the row names the leg. A feature directory, or a declared leg path under it, that holds a .git nothing above named is unmanaged.
  • A leg whose .git git cannot read is a TREE ... unreadable row, counted under "require recovery" and so by lane-start's recovery read (lanes-edit.sh:13191). The verdict is not indeterminate for it, because the sweep refuses on that verdict before it reads the legs and would hide its own count.
  • The verdict is indeterminate, never a clearance, where the manifest cannot be read, a leg's git worktree list fails, or the paired root, a feature directory or a leg directory cannot be listed or searched.
  • Adopts, deletes and overwrites nothing.

(c) The daily report (lane-worktrees sweep --all --dry-run --report)

For every canonical checkout whose project.yaml declares legs, each checked-out leg is read as a checkout of its own.

  • Its branches ("Unmerged branches with a missing, diverged or unpushed upstream"), root main ("Root main divergence") and rescue branches ("Awaiting disposition") gain rows ending the <path> leg of <assembly>. A leg that is also a canonical clone is read once (Report._checkouts at lane-worktrees:5409, _leg_cell at :5393; a4e0b17).
  • A new section, "Assembly legs with uncommitted or unpublished work", lists the legs holding dirty or untracked paths or a HEAD no origin ref holds, or that could not be read. It appears only where an assembly's leg is checked out.
  • A manifest that cannot be read is a row of "Records the report could not read". The report still changes nothing, and exits 0, or 1 where --post fails.

(d) lane-worktrees add

Where the lane's recorded directory is an assembly:

  • A tree made from a leg, or from any worktree of that leg's repository (a paired <assembly>/worktrees/<feature>/code included), is recorded with the leg as its checkout: set-lane-tree ... --checkout <assembly>/<path>.
  • A tree made from the assembly itself is made as before, with a note that a worktree does not check the legs out, and the --checkout <assembly>/<leg> that makes a leg's tree.
  • A manifest that cannot be read refuses: exit 2, nothing made. The other exits are as before: 0, 1 (made and neither recorded nor taken back out), 64.

The guidance, in docs/README-lanes.md and lane-worktrees --help: under a triad a lane makes a code tree with lane-worktrees add <lane> <slice> --checkout <assembly>/code.

Documents

What does not change

The single-repository guarantee. A checkout is asked something only if its own project.yaml is there.

The checkout What the tools ask it What it sees
No project.yaml. openRepoTools at f5c3bcd is this: there is none, and its one submodule, upstream/openRepoShape, is a dependency and not a leg Nothing: no project-legs call and no extra git read Every output, exit code, register line and inventory row that c45a452's tools produce
A project.yaml naming no leg but itself (path: ".") One project-legs read, answering 8 The same
A project.yaml that is there and cannot be read project-legs answers 1 Refused, never read as "no legs": sweep and add exit 2, lane-reconcile says indeterminate, lane-handoff says NOT POLLED. The one case with no leg known that moves
A project.yaml naming a leg: an assembly The reader, and the reads above The new behaviour

c45a452 is c4864ac plus the analysis. Main's lane-end, lane-worktrees and lane-handoff are byte-identical to c4864ac's: git diff c4864ac f5c3bcd -- lane-end lane-worktrees lane-handoff is empty. Main's lanes-edit.sh and lane-start have moved (#201, #203, #212, #216), in rename_undo, lane_next_free, swapped_*, rename-lane's stamp and lane-start's transcript follow and row stamp. None is a lane-reconcile, lane-end, lane-worktrees or lane-handoff change, and the goldens are unregenerated: the run at the head is what shows they still hold.

The tests that hold it. Both goldens were generated once from c45a452's own tools (git archive c45a452 | tar -x -C <dir>, then each module's --capture), stored because CI checks out at depth 1, and not regenerated since (git diff 9991d69 HEAD -- tests/fixtures is empty). Each normalises only what no two runs share: the bench's paths, tree and operation ids, stamps, hashes, ages, byte sizes, the order of the inventory's sidecars, and the note about this account's unreadable /proc processes.

  • test_t018_single_repository_outputs_are_c45a452s_byte_for_byte (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py:361, golden tests/fixtures/t018/single-repository.golden, 16 sections): add (dry run, act, and with a manifest naming no leg), the sweep's porcelain and table, lane-reconcile, lane-end refusing and passing, lane-handoff, and the estate report, on a repository with a submodule that is no leg and on one whose project.yaml names no leg but itself.
  • test_t018_single_repository_handoff_and_reconcile_are_c45a452s_byte_for_byte (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py:841, golden tests/fixtures/t018-handoff/single-repository-decoys.golden, 10 sections): a repository laid out to look like a triad (a submodule's worktree under worktrees/<feature>/code, the repository's own worktree under spec, a tree recorded with the submodule as its checkout), with no project.yaml and then with one naming no leg but itself.
  • Both are Linux-only, because the golden was captured where liveness is read in /proc, and neither needs the pinned openRepoShape, so both also run in tests-no-submodule. Not covered by them: macOS and Windows, which skip them, and the --yes paths.
  • Not in this diff, and so unchanged: tests/test_lane_worktrees.py, tests/test_lane_worktrees_report.py and tests/test_lane_helpers.sh.

Text that moves for every shape, because it is usage and not behaviour: lanes-edit.sh's unknown-subcommand refusal and usage header list project-legs (tests/test_repo_hygiene.py requires the refusal to name every arm), lane-worktrees --help gains an "A TRIAD" paragraph, and lane-end --help gains four lines in THE CLOSE-OUT GATE. No exit code, register line, inventory row, sweep row, gate verdict or report line moves with it.

Measurement: main's tools against T018's, on this workstation's triads (item 3's condition)

Read-only, on Eagle (py-bench), run 2026-10-17T22:56Z to 2026-10-18T01:34Z.

The answer.

  • No registered lane is homed on any triad. The register names 71 lanes (38 with an object log, 33 with only a LANES.md row). None records a dir that holds a project.yaml, and no lane's inventory records a tree on a triad. Every per-lane part above is gated on the lane's own dir and project.yaml, so no sweep row, lane-end verdict, handoff WRITERS line or lane-reconcile row changes for any registered lane. Measured for lane-reconcile (71 of 71 byte-identical, both tool sets) and for four lanes' gate sweeps (openRepoTools-3, openXwallet-1, openxfactory-4, codeXfactory-1, byte-identical); derived for the other 67.
  • The daily report changes, but not because of the seven triads. T018 reads the legs of 183 canonical assemblies: the seven triads and 176 test-fixture assemblies under ~/projects/.openrepotools-private-prep. The seven add no row: all 14 legs are clean, their HEADs are on origin, and they have no unpushed, gone or diverged branch. The new section "Assembly legs with uncommitted or unpublished work" appears with 213 rows, every one a fixture. "Unmerged branches..." gains 38 fixture rows and 8 duplicates, which were Finding 1 (fixed by a4e0b17).
  • Verdicts that flip to a refusal: none for any registered lane. For a lane that would be homed at openXdox or openWallet, lane-end flips from pass to refused, exit 2. No such lane exists today. Measured with a hypothetical lane in a scratch copy of the register for the sweep (exit 0 under main, 2 under T018); the lane-end verdict is derived from that exit (Finding 2).

Per triad, for a lane homed there. Every triad's legs are spec and code. The manifest answers exit 0 under T018 for every triad, with no unreadable manifest and no unlistable paired root on this workstation.

Triad Sweep rows that change lane-end Report lines lane-reconcile
IRRS (~/projects/InkRouter/IRRS) +2 leg clean (spec, code); exit 0 under both unchanged none identical: the one unmanaged row is the assembly's own IRRS-worktrees/001-irrs-routing-core, under both tools
IRSS (~/projects/InkRouter/IRSS) +2 leg clean unchanged none identical, 0 rows
MedxEHR +2 leg clean (both detached); exit 0, stderr identical unchanged (derived) none identical, 0 rows
MedxGlass +2 leg clean; exit 0, stderr identical unchanged (derived) none identical, 0 rows
openDox +2 leg clean; exit 0, stderr identical unchanged (derived) none identical, 0 rows
openXdox +1 FOREIGN tree row: the spec leg's second registration, ~/projects/openXdox-spec-worktrees/dox-product-layering-recovery-20260909; +2 leg clean. Exit 0 under main, 2 under T018 pass, then refused, exit 2 (derived; Finding 2) none +1 unmanaged row for that registration, and the TREES line reads 1 unmanaged or stale. lane-start's recovery read adds the unmanaged count, so a resumable lane there would get a new LANE RECOVERY note: a report, never a refusal
openWallet +1 FOREIGN row for the paired tree worktrees/add-trust-anchors-and-machine-holders-mail-grant/spec; +2 leg clean; under --branches four branch delete - rows in the legs (each merged, owner openXwallet-2, so not counted). Exit 0 under main, 2 under T018 pass, then refused, exit 2 (derived; Finding 2) none +1 unmanaged row for that tree. The handoff would print one PAIRED ROOT, not this lane's line, outside WRITERS, not counted and not recorded (derived)
codexFactory lane copies of openDox and openXdox none unchanged none unchanged

The codexFactory copies are ten clones (each a duplicate of ~/projects/openDox or ~/projects/openXdox, so FOREIGN under both tools, and T018 does not read their legs) and seven submodules of a codexFactory-lane-* superproject (six of openDox or openXdox, one of openWallet; no report candidate). No lane is homed on any copy. The same holds for openWallet-train/root and xFactory/{openDox,openXdox}.

The daily report as a whole, from the two reports run side by side on 2732d59 and bf2a220:

Section main T018 What changed
Unmerged branches with a missing, diverged or unpushed upstream 222 260 30 new rows, and 8 rows main already had (fixture legs that are clones) that gained the leg suffix and printed twice: Finding 1, fixed since by a4e0b17 (derived from its test, not re-measured). All 38 are under ~/projects/.openrepotools-private-prep
Assembly legs with uncommitted or unpublished work none 213 the new section. 134 fixture assemblies in eight folders; 148 rows say a HEAD no origin ref holds, 54 also have dirty paths, 11 are unreadable (.git/index: index file smaller than expected). None is a named triad or a codexFactory copy
Root main divergence, Awaiting disposition, Records the report could not read, FOREIGN repositories, Orphaned worktrees, Ignored directories, Evidence-shaped paths, Sweep archives, Workspace hygiene, status --all 7, 16, 283, 501, 22, 59, 61, 0, 2, 22 same no line changed
Caches and sandboxes 972 971 volatile (test runs that came and went during the 70-minute runs); T018 does not touch this section

Of the 270 lines only T018 prints, none names a path in the seven triads.

Findings.

  1. The report printed a leg's rows twice where the leg is itself a canonical clone. Fixed by a4e0b17: Report._checkouts reads each checkout once by its real path, _leg_cell still names the leg, and test_t018_the_report_lists_a_leg_that_is_also_a_canonical_clone_once (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py:823) holds the branch, main and rescue sections to one row. Real triads' legs are submodules, so it showed only on fixtures.
  2. A refusal T018 newly reaches, through a FOREIGN tree it newly sees. This is lane openRepoTools-2's fixture debris and it is not this PR's.
    • _other_lanes refuses on any unreadable other-lane record, but only once the lane has a tree (lane-worktrees: close #170's --yes data-loss and gate holes, self-check every removal, switch --yes back on #174 R3). For a lane homed at openXdox or openWallet, main finds no tree, so the unreadable record is a note. T018 finds a FOREIGN tree (the spec leg's registration, or the paired tree), so the same record refuses, exit 2.
    • The record is repoA-5/trees/c1.yaml, under lane 2's preserved pytest basetemp in ~/projects/.openrepotools-private-prep/work-20261011/lane2-composed-r3/. It is a deliberate fixture written by test_a_record_the_report_canno... (body schema: 1, no path).
    • The flip is real for any future lane homed at openXdox or openWallet until that debris leaves ~/projects. It is no flip for any lane that exists. For the record, openRepoTools-3's own gate sweep already refuses under main on the same record (measured, exit 2 under both tools), and so does every lane whose estate root is ~/projects and that holds a tree (derived). That is main's refusal, and T018 does not change it.
    • Told to its owning lane: no lane owns either flip. Lane openRepoTools-2 owns the debris, and is told on Triad migration (feature 004-migrate-to-triad): execution tracking under Brett Heap's word of 2026-10-07 #186 before the landing: lane 3's register NOTED to lane openRepoTools-2 of 2026-10-18T01:37:24Z. Moving the debris aside is a person's word.

Tool shas and what has moved since. Main 83d2690 and T018 9a8f175 (a first round ran on main 2732d59 and T018 bf2a220, and its slow outputs are reused where the tools they ran are byte-identical: lane-worktrees and lane-end on both sides, main's lanes-edit.sh, and T018's lanes-edit.sh apart from #212's hunks and one reworded TREE ... unreadable line). Since 9a8f175 the branch has merged main to f5c3bcd (lane-start, #203; lanes-edit.sh, #201: no reader the measurement ran) and fixed Finding 1. The measurement was not re-run on 88ee9d9.

How it was run. Both tool sets were extracted by git archive into a scratch directory, and nothing ran from a worktree. One wrapper allowed only lanes-edit.sh project-legs|lane-reconcile|lane-dir|lane-trees and lane-worktrees sweep ... --dry-run without --yes, --fetch, --post, --expire or add, with every LANES_*/TMUX* variable unset or set to a scratch value and no register fetch. The register refs read were 1877de834 and 76b1733ae.

Limits.

  • Derived, not run: lane-end, lane-handoff, lane-start, lane-worktrees add, and the sweep's table form. A lane held by a live session or bound elsewhere refuses its sweep from outside; lane-end runs the gate inside the lane's own session, which this cannot be.
  • What was measured per lane: lane-reconcile for all 71, the gate sweep for four real lanes and for one hypothetical lane per triad. The other 67 gate sweeps are derived from Sweep._assembly returning at once without a project.yaml in the lane's dir.
  • Not covered: macOS and Windows; --yes; an assembly whose manifest or paired root is unreadable, because there is none here.

Review

  • Pre-PR review of 9991d69 (2026-10-11), FIT AFTER MUST-FIXES. M1 (the paired root), M2 (nothing run on the merge with main), S1 to S5, N1 to N6.
    • M1 is 4d4957d and lane 1's ruling above. S1 (an unlistable root is NOT POLLED), S5's tests and N1 to N5 are 4d4957d. S2 (--yes acts on a leg's branches) and S4 (the analysis's false statements about the branch) are 6658396. S3 (what goes live) is the measurement. M2 is the merges of main and the run at the head. N6 is an existing pattern and unchanged.
  • Review of 7757eaa..bf2a220 (2026-10-17T22:56Z), by a read-only opus-xhigh reviewer. It confirms both design calls:
    • No SWAPPING for an unreadable leg itself. The handoff never polls a leg, and SWAPPING would make lane-reconcile say interrupted-swap, which would be false and would mark every lane homed there. The signal still reaches every reader: reconcile counts the row, lane-start's recovery read prints LANE RECOVERY, the sweep exits 3 and lane-end refuses (test_t018_a_leg_git_cannot_read_is_counted_and_holds_lane_end).
    • Name but do not record a tree the handoff cannot place, and stay SWAPPING. The aim is confirmed; its scope was too wide (S1).
    • It lists M1 (no verification), S1, S2 and N1 to N4. Each fix, from the diffs:
Finding Commit Where Test
M1 no verification the run, not a commit t018-verify-20261018T034203Z.log, recorded in 3d0642c the T018 selection
S1 the handoff withheld every tree that was not of the assembly's own repository while any leg was unreadable, including worktrees of unrelated repositories 5d2c1c8 writer_checkout (lane-handoff:2266) withholds only a tree whose common git directory is unreadable, lies inside the assembly or its git directory, or is recorded under an unreadable leg (recorded_under_unreadable_leg, :2252). Any other tree keeps the lane's dir test_t018_an_unreadable_leg_withholds_no_tree_of_another_repository (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py:597): a worktree of a third repository, recorded before and made after the leg broke, and one a record names under the unreadable leg
S2 poll_writer passed over a tree whose .git git cannot read 5d2c1c8 unreadable_writer (lane-handoff:1932), called from poll_writer (:1953) in an assembly only: the tree is listed, counted, UNREADABLE, (NOT recorded), added to lc_inventory_missed and named on stderr. A checkout with no project.yaml naming a leg passes over it as before, so the goldens do not move test_t018_a_tree_git_cannot_read_in_an_assembly_is_named_and_holds_the_lane_swapping (:659): modules/spec deleted after add --checkout spec, and a single repository's tree passed over
N1 the UNREADABLE LEG line always said a tree was withheld 5d2c1c8 the clause depends on whether any tree was withheld (lane-handoff:2476-2478), and a withheld tree's WRITERS line is marked (NOT recorded) (:2015) asserted in the handoff unreadable-leg test (:503) and in the S1 and S2 tests
N2 "before relaunching a writer onto it", for a leg that is the assembly's shared checkout 5d2c1c8 now "onto a tree of its repository": lane-handoff:2184 and :2482, and lanes-edit.sh:13191 asserted in both the reconcile test (:448) and the handoff test (:503)
N3 README: "counted" was ambiguous 5d2c1c8 docs/README-lanes.md:3974-3976: the count is stderr's legs: N ... line, never WRITERS' (N found) none (wording)
N4 the empty-.git-directory case was never run with a tree made by add from the leg 5d2c1c8 test only test_t018_a_leg_tree_add_made_is_withheld_where_the_legs_git_is_an_empty_directory (:729)

Tests

35 test functions in two modules, and the two goldens: 21 in tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py, 14 in tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py. Every repository, origin, register, $HOME and state directory is under tmp_path, a fake gh exits 1, and the network is never reached. The assembly is built from openRepoShape's own templates/assembly-root/ bytes at the pin, each leg a real repository behind a bare local origin, with a dependency nested in the code leg. The assembly cases skip where the pinned openRepoShape is not checked out, and fail rather than skip in composed mode. The unreadable-manifest cases skip under root, which reads a mode-000 file.

invariant the two goldens the single-repository guarantee

Red at base. At 6658396, the branch's tests against f87fd5a's tools gave 27 failed and 3 passed (#186, 6240688657): the assembly cases fail, the goldens pass by construction. Not re-run on the head, whose two modules have gained tests since.

Last completed run, before the head. At 6658396 (tree 1511f94: 4d4957d plus its docs, main f87fd5a merged), the selection -k "triad_lane_tooling or repo_hygiene or test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes" through tests/run.sh gave 181 passed, 1 failed in 1818.96 s. The two T018 modules, with both goldens unregenerated, and tests/test_repo_hygiene.py all passed. The one failure is the shell suite (4598 passed, 2 failed): the two clause (c) TAIL assertions, #180, fixed by #215. Since then the pin moved from 7f84ca4 to 190133d (#233) and the branch gained the commits above, so that run says nothing about the head.

At the head (3d0642c, the record of the run on 88ee9d9's tree): the same selection through tests/run.sh, every LANES_* and TMUX* variable unset: 224 passed, 1 failed, 1 deselected, in 4045.64 s, from lane 3's log t018-verify-20261018T034203Z.log. Both T018 modules, with both goldens unregenerated, and tests/test_repo_hygiene.py all passed. The failure is test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes: the shell suite went 4620 passed and 2 failed, on the two #180 row-stamp tail cases of condition 3, main's own. CI's Linux tests and tests-no-submodule jobs on this PR are the suite of record (AGENTS.md ruling 3).

Landing

Not in this PR

  • The rest of T018 as tasks.md words it: "Exercise OpenSpec/Speckit feature selection and estate park/resume in disposable triad fixtures, then perform reviewed binding/WIP transitions through supported tools at owner breakpoints." None of it is in this diff. The disposable exercise is lane 1's, on 004-migrate-to-triad-t018, and Triad migration (feature 004-migrate-to-triad): execution tracking under Brett Heap's word of 2026-10-07 #186 records it as acceptance evidence for this code. The estate verbs park, resume and status, and workBenches' park.sh and resume.sh, are untouched: the changes lane 1 ruled for them are opensoft/workBenches#166.
  • Analysis proposals not implemented here: narrowing lane and lanes when run inside a leg (§4.8); #n expansion and the OpenSpec object-key re-keying (§4.5, §7 items 1 and 2); the two repos.tsv rows for the legs (§4.9, after Gate C creates them); a test that runs lane-start's rung 5 against an openRepoTools-shaped manifest (§4.2). This PR tests the shared reader against the template's manifest and holds its awk lines equal to rung 5's.
  • No change to lane-start, lane, lanes, lane-rename, lanes-index, link-estates, repos.tsv, the installer, the hooks it merges, tests/conftest.py, or any workflow.

docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md: for every lane tool, the installer and
its receipt, the hooks, the manuals, the tests, CI and the brett-wip
register/inventory/handoff data, what the assembly/spec/code split of
opensoft/openRepoTools changes, at file:line on c4864ac, with the plan task
each change belongs to and whether it is a patch or a proposal.

No shipped command changes: no lane tool reads docs/, openspec/ or specs/
at run time (the adoption plan's cross-leg follow-ups for them are comments,
usage text, a URL or the object-key grammar), and every fix the triad does
need changes today's behaviour, so each is a proposal with a sketch. The
suite's test roots (T009/T010) are lane 1's PR #190 (c139e88); this branch's
earlier draft of them was withdrawn before commit, and the document records
the overlap, one gap and one measured defect in #190 for lane 1.

…ader, the sweep's leg and paired-tree discovery, lane-end's leg rows

Checkpoint for an account swap, on the coordinator's word. NOTHING HERE HAS
BEEN RUN UNDER tests/run.sh: `bash -n` passes for lanes-edit.sh and lane-end,
and lane-worktrees parses as Python; one manual run of
`lanes-edit.sh project-legs` against openRepoShape's assembly-root
project.yaml template (pinned submodule) printed the spec and code legs, exit
0, with no workspace configured; 8 for a directory with no manifest; 64 for a
relative path.

DONE (T018, plan proposal 2 of docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.4):
- lanes-edit.sh: `project_leg_paths_file` (lane-start rung 5's awk, the
seven deciding lines verbatim, printing every leg) and `assembly_legs`; the
  read-only subcommand `project-legs <checkout>` (0 rows, 8 none, 1 manifest
unreadable, 64 usage), exempt from the workspace guard; listed in the
unknown-subcommand refusal and the usage header.
- lane-worktrees sweep: where the lane's dir has a project.yaml naming legs,
`Leg` rows for each leg and each initialized nested submodule (porcelain
kind `leg`, a LEGS section, a summary suffix), counted only where the leg's
  HEAD's own Lane: trailer is this lane's and it holds work, or unreadable;
every leg's worktree registrations enumerated; `<assembly>/worktrees`
scanned as the paired root and claimed by the same HEAD-trailer rule as
.claude/worktrees; legs' branches under --branches and probed under
--fetch. No project.yaml: no helper call and no new code path's output.
- lane-end: `leg` porcelain rows counted (retire) or listed (not counted),
"leg checkout(s)" in the gate's tally, no `--yes` offered when legs are all
  that is counted.

REMAINS, in order: (1) tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py — assembly fixture
from the pinned template bytes with legs as real repositories and bare local
remotes, fake gh exiting 1; single-repository golden comparisons against
c45a452's tools (CI checks out depth 1, so the old bytes need a decision:
skip where c45a452 is absent, or captured goldens); the shared-awk identity
check against lane-start; (2) README-lanes.md and usage text for (a);
(3) commit (b) lane-handoff paired-root poll + recording the leg checkout,
lane-reconcile's leg registrations; (4) (c) the daily report's legs;
(5) (d) add recording the leg; (6) the shell suite once at the end.

…ME-lanes, usage text, the dated §4.4 note; 2aa8a59's code now tested

Plan task T018 (#186), slice (d2), part (a). This
commit carries the guidance for the code 2aa8a59 added: a "A triad: its
legs, their worktrees and the paired trees (T018)" section and a `leg` row
in the porcelain block of docs/README-lanes.md; a "A TRIAD" paragraph in
`lane-worktrees --help`; four lines in lane-end's CLOSE-OUT GATE header
(`lane-end --help`); and a dated subsection at the end of §4.4 of
docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md, including the note "outputs that change
regardless of shape" the coordinator asked for (the unknown-subcommand list
and usage header of lanes-edit.sh, and the --help texts), for lane 1's ruling.

THE INVARIANT: a checkout with no project.yaml declaring a leg other than
itself is asked nothing, so a single repository's sweep rows, gate verdict,
exit codes, register lines and inventory rows are unchanged. Only usage text
moves for every shape, as listed in the §4.4 note.

THE PROOF, run under tests/run.sh with this tree (tools as committed here and
in 2aa8a59):
  tests/run.sh -k "t018 or repo_hygiene or test_lane_worktrees"
  -> 1 failed, 299 passed, 1006 deselected in 1002.77s
The 299 include every test of tests/test_lane_worktrees.py and
tests/test_lane_worktrees_report.py, the hygiene module, and the T018 tests:
the single-repository golden comparison against c45a452's stored outputs and
the assembly cases (template bytes, legs as real repositories behind bare
local origins, fake gh exiting 1). The one failure was the hygiene check on
host-absolute paths, tripped by the golden fixture's `<ROOT>/home/projects/`;
that fixture and its test module are the next commit, WIP, with the fix.

… the single-repository golden captured from c45a452's tools

Checkpoint for an account swap, on the coordinator's word. The module and
its stored fixture, after the fix of the one failure the previous run found;
the fixed form has NOT been run under tests/run.sh (the re-run,
`tests/run.sh -k "t018 or repo_hygiene"`, was stopped while still waiting
before the lock, exit 143, so it never held it).

DONE:
- The stored-fixture decision: the "before" of the single-repository
  invariant is tests/fixtures/t018/single-repository.golden, generated ONCE
  from c45a452's own tools (`git archive c45a452 | tar -x -C <dir>`, then
  `python3 tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py --capture <dir>`), because CI
checks out at depth 1 where c45a452 is not there to run. It covers add
(dry run and act), the sweep's porcelain and table with --branches
  --include-scratch --include-caches, lane-reconcile, lane-end refusing and
passing with the row and last log line, lane-handoff's output, top block
and inventory, and the estate report, on a repository with a submodule that
is no leg and on one whose project.yaml names no leg but itself.
- Normalised for what no two runs share and nothing else: the bench's root
and $HOME (both spellings), tree ids, operation ids, stamps, hashes, ages,
byte sizes, the order of the inventory's sidecars (their file names are a
checksum of the bench's path), and the sweep table's note about this
account's unreadable /proc processes (a host fact). The golden test runs on
Linux only, where it was captured.
- The fix since the run: `$HOME` is normalised to `<HOME>` before the root,
so the fixture names no `/home/<user>/` path (the hygiene failure). Captured
twice from c45a452 afterwards: byte-identical. The current tools' outputs
on the same scenario equal it (compared by the module's own functions,
  not by pytest).

REMAINS: run `tests/run.sh -k "t018 or repo_hygiene"` and record the counts;
then (b) lane-handoff's paired-root poll and leg-checkout record with
lane-reconcile's leg registrations, (c) the report's legs, (d) add's leg
record (all three drafted in the session scratchpad, not applied), and the
shell suite once at the end.

…composed mode; three ways a composed job can pin the PR's code

Plan task T010 (#186). Queued by the coordinator from
the review of #190: the §4.14 sketch (code-PR CI with
OPENREPOTOOLS_COMPOSED=1 against an assembly checked out at main) would exit
4, because #190 at dbc6837 refuses any code root the assembly does not pin —
Roots.absent() (tests/conftest.py:283) runs _leg_at_its_pin (:259), and
pytest_configure (:404-412) raises it as pytest.UsageError — while
discover_assembly (:159-172) finds only an assembly that mounts the code
root. Dated notes in §4.14 and §7 item 7: the composed job must check out an
assembly whose code gitlink points at the PR's own commit, or a throwaway
assembly built for the run that pins it, or use #190's standalone mode.

Documentation only; no tool or test changes. Marked WIP (untested) because
the hygiene suite has not been run over this text: the checkpoint came first.

…ut of its own, with a legs section only where an assembly's leg is checked out

Plan task T018 (#186), proposal 3 of
docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.4. A leg is a submodule, its `.git` a
FILE, so `Report.build` never counted one as a canonical checkout and the
branches all lane work makes after the split never reached the report. Now,
for every canonical checkout whose own project.yaml declares legs (read by
`lanes-edit.sh project-legs`), each checked-out leg is read as a checkout of
its own: its branches ("Unmerged branches…"), its root `main` ("Root main
divergence") and its rescue branches ("Awaiting disposition"), each leg row
ending with `the <path> leg of <assembly>`; and a section "Assembly legs with
uncommitted or unpublished work" lists the legs holding dirty or untracked
paths or a HEAD no origin ref holds, or that could not be read. A manifest
that cannot be read is a row of "Records the report could not read". Guidance
in docs/README-lanes.md's report table and `lane-worktrees --help`.

THE INVARIANT: a canonical checkout with no project.yaml is asked nothing; the
legs section is added only where a leg was found, so a report of single
repositories is byte for byte what it was. This changes the daily report for
the estate's existing triads (IRRS, IRSS, MedxEHR, openDox), which is what
proposal 3 is for.

THE PROOF:
  * For 8e2227e and 96da9af, which were WIP: `tests/run.sh -k "t018 or
    repo_hygiene"` -> 162 passed, 1144 deselected in 134.24s (2026-10-09T13:25Z).
  * For this commit: run.sh's own in-lock command under the same lock, because
the wrapper's workstation-wide census had waited 30 minutes on other
projects' pytest runs (#184) - on the coordinator's word, the form lane 1
    approved on 2026-10-07: `flock -w 7200 /tmp/openrepotools-pytest.lock env
    TMPDIR=<run root>/tmp python3 -m pytest tests -q -p no:cacheprovider
    --basetemp=<run root>/basetemp -k "t018 or repo_hygiene or
    test_lane_worktrees_report"` -> 184 passed, 1124 deselected in 457.65s.
That includes the single-repository golden (the report section of c45a452's
stored outputs, unchanged), every test of tests/test_lane_worktrees_report.py,
the hygiene module, and two new cases: an assembly whose code leg holds an
unpushed branch and whose spec leg is dirty, and an estate with no assembly,
    which has no legs section.

… says of a tree made from an assembly itself that its legs are empty there

Plan task T018 of #186, slice (d2), proposal 1 of
docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.4.

Where the lane's checkout is an ASSEMBLY - its project.yaml declares a leg
other than itself, read only through `lanes-edit.sh project-legs`, lane-start's
rung-5 reading - `lane-worktrees add` matches the checkout it makes the tree
from against each leg by their common git directory (the leg's own toplevel
must be the leg's path, so an uninitialized leg, which git answers as the
assembly, never matches). A tree made from the leg, or from any worktree of
that leg's repository (a paired <assembly>/worktrees/<feature>/code included),
is recorded in the #97 inventory with THE LEG as its checkout, which every
inventory reader enumerates; the dry-run and success notes name the leg, and
the success note says "with <leg> as its checkout" where the checkout given was
a worktree of it. A tree made from the assembly itself is made as before, and a
note says a worktree does not check the legs out and names the
`--checkout <assembly>/<leg>` that makes a leg's tree. A manifest that cannot
be read refuses, exit 2, nothing made (Amendment 7(d)).

THE INVARIANT: a lane whose checkout has no project.yaml is asked nothing (no
helper call), and a manifest that declares no leg other than `.` answers 8 -
so on a single repository `add`'s output, exit code, inventory row and
take-back text are byte-for-byte what they were. PROOF:
test_t018_single_repository_outputs_are_c45a452s_byte_for_byte compares the
current tools against tests/fixtures/t018/single-repository.golden, stored from
c45a452's tools, whose "add --dry-run", "add" and "add (manifest, no leg)"
sections are add's; it passes unchanged. The shell suite's
#163 add block (tests/test_lane_helpers.sh) runs once on the merged tree at the
end of this slice.

Help text that changes regardless of shape (listed in the §4.4 note for lane
1's ruling, item 2): `lane-worktrees --help`'s "A TRIAD" paragraph gains two
sentences on add. Guidance: docs/README-lanes.md "In a triad (T018), a tree of
a leg is made from the leg". The §4.4 note's first paragraph now names (a)
through (d), with (b) a second writer's branch this one merges.

Tests (tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py, fixtures from openRepoShape's
assembly-root template bytes, legs behind bare local remotes, gh exits 1):
test_t018_add_records_the_leg_it_made_a_tree_from (dry run, an add from

… each tree recorded under its leg

Plan task T018 (#186), slice (d2), part (b), first
half. Two gaps docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.4 and §4.7 measured in
the handoff's writer poll, closed SHAPE-GATED through 2aa8a59's shared reader
(`lanes-edit.sh project-legs`, called as it is):

(1) THE PAIRED ROOT IS POLLED. Where the lane's checkout is an assembly (its
own project.yaml declares a leg other than itself), the handoff polls
    `<assembly>/worktrees/<feature>` and `<feature>/<each declared leg path>`
as it polls `.claude/worktrees`: every directory there with a `.git` of its
own (anything else under it is the assembly's working tree, where git
answers too). A lane with unpushed work in a paired tree used to be absent
    from its WRITERS block.
(2) EACH TREE IS RECORDED UNDER ITS LEG. A polled tree whose repository's
common git directory is a checked-out leg's is filed with that leg
(project-legs' third column, the path `add --checkout` records) as its
checkout. Anything else keeps the lane's dir, as before. The first handoff
used to rewrite the leg that `lane-worktrees add --checkout <assembly>/code`
recorded to the assembly. A leg that is NOT checked out is passed over:
git answers the assembly there, and the drafts' leg map, which lacked that
guard, would have filed every tree of the assembly under a deinitialized
leg (measured: with the guard deleted, the deinit case fails).

AN UNREADABLE project.yaml is never "no legs" (Amendment 7(d)), and the swap
still completes (R-A11-11). The paired root is not polled, the top block's
WRITERS section carries a `- NOT POLLED:` line, no sidecar is filed for a
tree that is not of the lane's own repository (the checkout `add` recorded
is kept), and the lane stays SWAPPING.

THE GATE: a checkout with no project.yaml is asked nothing. There is no
helper call and no git read, and set-lane-tree gets the same argv. One whose
project.yaml names no leg but itself costs one `project-legs` call, which
answers 8, and nothing else. `--supervise` and `--restart-status` exit before
any changed line. No usage or --help text moves.

THE PROOF, under tests/run.sh, lanes-edit.sh at base (lane-reconcile is the
next commit):
  tests/run.sh -k "t018 or supervised_restart or repo_hygiene or openrepotools_command" -rs
  -> 7 failed, 429 passed, 874 deselected in 3149.31s (load 60-70 on 32 cores)
  The 429 include tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py, whose single-repository
golden from c45a452 passes UNREGENERATED (tests/fixtures/t018/ untouched),
and the new tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py: three assembly cases
built from openRepoShape's template bytes at the pin (legs as real
repositories behind bare local origins, fake gh exiting 1), and a second
  stored golden, tests/fixtures/t018-handoff/single-repository-decoys.golden.
That golden was captured twice from c45a452's own tools, byte-identical,
on a single repository laid out to look like a triad: a submodule's
worktree under worktrees/<feature>/code, and a tree recorded with the
submodule as its checkout. Its scenario has no project.yaml, and then one
naming no leg but itself. The handoff output, top block, inventory and
lane-reconcile before and after all match it.
The 7 failures are --restart/--supervise timing cases of
  tests/test_supervised_restart_regressions.py (TimeoutExpired, "observer
never confirmed readiness"). A/B at load ~40, one run.sh run each:
    this tree:       -k "<the 7>" -> 7 passed, 1303 deselected in 143.69s
    96da9af (archive copy, no change): -> 7 passed, 1299 deselected in 150.59s
so they are load, not this change.
Against 96da9af's lane-handoff the three new assembly cases fail
(measured); the base handoff turns the `add`-recorded `<assembly>/code`
  into `<assembly>`.

…egistrations and the paired root

Plan task T018 (#186), slice (d2), part (b), second
half: the third gap docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §4.4 measured.
`lanes-edit.sh lane-reconcile` read only the checkout's own worktree
registrations and the two lane roots, so a tree of a leg's repository that no
sidecar names was invisible to it. SHAPE-GATED, through `assembly_legs`
(2aa8a59's shared reader, called as it is):

- EVERY CHECKED-OUT LEG'S REGISTRATIONS, read beside the checkout's own. Each
worktree git registers in a leg that no sidecar names is a TREE row:
`unmanaged`, or `stale-registration` where its directory is gone. The row
names the leg ("git registers it in <leg>, the code leg of
<assembly>/project.yaml (<repository>)"). The leg's main entry, which git
spells as its git directory under `.git/modules/`, is skipped by place. A
leg that is not checked out (git answers the assembly there) registers
nothing of its own and is passed over.
- THE PAIRED ROOT, after the lane roots: `<assembly>/worktrees/<feature>` and
`<feature>/<each declared leg path>`, each holding a `.git` of its own that
nothing above named (a lost registration, or a clone where a worktree
  belongs), is `unmanaged`.
- PATHS NOBODY READ ARE NOT CLEARED: a project.yaml that cannot be read, a
leg whose `git worktree list` fails, or a paired root or feature directory
that cannot be listed makes the verdict `indeterminate`. The unreadable
manifest is said in the words `lane-worktrees`' sweep refuses with ("the
legs of the assembly <dir> could not be read"), because the sweep reads
this verdict first and refuses on it. The previous run's one failure,
tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py:616, was exactly that: same exit 2, the
reconciliation's wording instead of the sweep's. One fact now has one
spelling, and that test passes unchanged.

Nothing is adopted, deleted or overwritten, as before. THE GATE: a checkout
with no project.yaml is asked nothing. One whose project.yaml names no leg
but itself gets `assembly_legs`' 8 and nothing else. Every row, count and
verdict on a single repository is what it was.

THE PROOF, under tests/run.sh, this exact tree (lanes-edit.sh and the test
module last written 2026-10-10T02:43:15Z, the run started 02:43:34Z):
  tests/run.sh -k "t018 or supervised_restart or lanes_index or repo_hygiene or lane_start_claude_current or openrepotools_command" -rs
  -> 544 passed, 768 deselected in 1318.62s (0:21:58), on a quiet box
The 544 include both T018 modules. Two goldens stored from c45a452's tools
  pass UNREGENERATED: tests/fixtures/t018/single-repository.golden (byte
  identical) and tests/fixtures/t018-handoff/single-repository-decoys.golden.
The latter covers lane-reconcile before and after a handoff on a
repository laid out to look like a triad. Also included are the
supervised-restart module, the lanes-index module (the real
  lane-reconcile), lane-start's module (it calls lane-reconcile), hygiene
and the installer module. Two new cases are in
  tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py, on openRepoShape's template
bytes at the pin: the legs' registrations and the paired root are
reported (a spec tree made away from every root, a paired code worktree,
a clone in the paired root, a stale registration; neither leg nor its
`.git/modules` entry reported), and the indeterminate verdicts (unreadable
manifest, unlistable paired root). Against 96da9af's lanes-edit.sh both
  fail (measured).
The earlier run of this half, before the wording fix: 1 failed, 446
passed, 865 deselected in 2718.97s (the :616 case above).

each tree under its leg) and 9a5bbe2 (lane-reconcile reads each checked-out
leg's worktree registrations and the paired root). A plain merge into (a), (c)

Writer 2's paragraph (briefs/t018-b-guidance.md, 2026-10-09T21:53Z) after
"`lane-end`'s gate" in the T018 section, each sentence checked against the
merged lane-handoff (4e39854) and lane_reconcile (9a5bbe2). Two corrections:
the unreadable-manifest verdict is spelled in the sweep's words, which the
sweep reads first and refuses on (exit 2); and a project.yaml naming no leg
but itself is asked one project-legs call (answering 8), not nothing.

test_t018_add_refuses_where_the_manifest_cannot_be_read holds 13cb52d's README

reads "the legs of the assembly <dir> could not be read", the sweep's and
9a5bbe2's words, in place of "the legs of the lane's assembly <dir>". Reached

…em 11, for lane 1's ruling), and §6 says what the branch now ships

docs/README-lanes.md, T018 section: a parked or resumed paired tree carries no
Lane: trailer (park.sh puts the lane in the WIP subject only; resume
soft-resets those commits), so the sweep and lane-end's gate count it for
nobody unless the lane's inventory names it. The paragraph says what to read
before lane-end in an assembly, and how to record such a tree with
set-lane-tree so the gate counts it.

docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md: a dated §6 note on what the branch ships
beyond its first commit, and §7 item 11, the choice between reading park's
WIP subject and giving park's commit a trailer, plus whether resume records
the tree it rebuilds.

Written by the previous writer on 2026-10-11 and left uncommitted; checked
here against HEAD 8cb1368, whose lane-worktrees, lane-end and lane-handoff are
byte-identical to 9991d69's. Every line reference holds: lane-worktrees
:2424-2431, :4473-4494 and :2124, lane-end :2122-2127, the FOREIGN reason text
(lane-worktrees:3037-3039), and workBenches ffd5516 park.sh :226 and :860 and
resume.sh :221-231 and :746. Three corrections in item 11: the source is
review 5481327496 on #196 (a pull-request review, not an issue comment); its
finding 2 was derived from code and not run, so "measured" is now "derived",
the document's own word for that; and the inventory names a paired tree through
lanes-edit.sh set-lane-tree, not through lane-worktrees add, which makes its
trees under the lane's own root only.

Docs only. No test run for this commit; the branch's one verification run
follows the M1(a) and should-fix commits.

…root by the sweep's rule, so one lane's handoff never takes another lane's feature trees; and S1, S5, N1-N5

M1 (a). In an assembly, lane-handoff polled and recorded every .git-bearing
tree under <assembly>/worktrees as the running lane's writer. The paired root
is per feature, not per lane, so after one handoff another lane's paired
work was this lane's inventory: lane-end refused on it, sweep --yes could
rescue and remove it, and the next session was told to relaunch writers into
it. Now a paired tree is polled and recorded only where this lane's inventory
names it (lanes-edit.sh lane-trees, read once), its HEAD's own last Lane:
trailer is this lane's on a commit origin's default branch lacks (a bash
mirror of lane-worktrees' own_trailers/head_lane_trailer; a clone is never
claimed by trailer, as the sweep never adopts one), or the --writers-file
names it. Every other checkout there is one "- PAIRED ROOT, not this lane's:
<path> — branch …" line under its own heading in the top block, outside
WRITERS, not counted and not recorded. Pending lane 1's ruling on #186
between (a) and (b).

S1. A paired root, feature directory or leg directory that cannot be listed
or searched was skipped in silence by the handoff. It is now a "- NOT
POLLED" line, a stderr note and a lane left SWAPPING, as is an inventory
that cannot be read. lane-reconcile (indeterminate) and the sweep's _paired
(exit 2) gain the one case they also passed over: a leg's directory under a
feature that cannot be searched, and in the sweep a root or feature
directory that can be listed but not searched.

N1. lane-reconcile passes the feature directory to awk through ENVIRON, not
-v. N3. The handoff's unreadable-manifest words are the sweep's and
lane-reconcile's ("the legs of the assembly <dir> could not be read").
N4. add's hint names every leg's --checkout, not legs[-1]. N5. The handoff
keeps a recorded checkout of the tree's own repository (a dependency nested
in a leg) instead of re-recording the tree under the assembly.

Tests. N2: the assembly cases wear conftest's NEEDS_UPSTREAM (composed mode
fails rather than skips), and the no-assembly report test needs no marker.
New: the two-lane M1 regression; S1's three unlistable directories (handoff
and reconcile); N5; S5(b) the sweep's absent row and add's toplevel guard on
a deinitialized leg; S5(c) an unreadable leg (counted, lane-end refuses),
the submodule-status refusal (unshadowed by reconcile) and _paired's own
refusals called directly; and the coordinator's quoted-manifest case
(openRepoShape v1.0.0, #395 writes path: "{{SPEC_PATH}}"): project-legs
already strips one pair of " or ' quotes, and the test holds it for both
quote styles. Two existing handoff tests change for M1 (a): the no-commit
paired spec tree is named by a writers file, and the paired code tree of the
deinitialized-leg case carries the lane's trailer.

A checkout with no project.yaml is untouched: every new path runs only where
project-legs answered legs (lane-handoff, lane-reconcile, the sweep) or the
manifest declares them (add).

Untested in this commit: the branch's one verification run follows on the
final tree, and its counts are in the commit that ends this step.

Lane: openRepoTools-3
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…hanged; the analysis's false statements about the branch are dated and corrected (S4)

docs/README-lanes.md, T018 section:
- M1 (a): "each lane's handoff records every paired tree" is gone. The
handoff polls and records a paired tree only where the lane's inventory
names it, its HEAD's own Lane: trailer is the lane's on a commit origin's
default branch lacks, or the writers file names it; every other one is a
"PAIRED ROOT, not this lane's" line outside WRITERS, not counted or
recorded. The sweep's bullet says the handoff no longer widens its
paired-root rule, and the parked-tree paragraph says a handoff does not
record a parked tree for the lane.
- S1: the handoff's NOT POLLED, stderr note and SWAPPING for an unlistable
paired root, feature directory or leg directory, or an unreadable
inventory; reconcile's indeterminate and the sweep's refusal now also
cover a leg directory that cannot be searched.
- S2: "no --yes acts on a leg" is now "on a leg checkout": under --branches
a leg's branches are rows like the checkout's own, and --yes deletes a
merged lane branch there as it does in the checkout, bundling first.
- N5: a tree recorded under a checkout of its own repository (a dependency
nested in a leg) keeps that checkout through a handoff.

docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md (S4): dated 2026-10-13 notes at §0 item 1
and §6. "This branch carries no test change of its own" was true of its first
commit only; it now carries two test modules and two goldens and still
changes none of the suite's roots. §6 records M1 (a) and S1, and §7 item 11
says the handoff no longer closes the parked-tree gap by itself.

Verification, one run through tests/run.sh on this commit's tree, 1511f94
(4d4957d plus these docs; main f87fd5a merged at 8cb1368), 2026-10-13
19:10-19:40Z. Every module but the four below was --ignore'd, with
-k "triad_lane_tooling or repo_hygiene or test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes":
  181 passed, 1 failed, 1 deselected in 1818.96s.
  - tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py, tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py
(both goldens unregenerated) and tests/test_repo_hygiene.py: all passed.
  - The shell suite, tests/test_lane_helpers_suite.py::
    test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes: 4598 passed, 2 failed. Both are
    lane-start row-stamp assertions, "…with clause (c)'s directory and
window in the tail" and "the row's stamp states clause (c)'s two facts
… in its TAIL". lane-start's cut_to_line caps the stamp at 230 characters
    (lane-start:3502-3510). Under run.sh the suite's $HOME is
    ~/.local/state/openRepoTools/tmp/<UTC>-<pid>/tmp/tmp.XXXXXXXXXX/home, and
the stamp then reaches 231 characters before its window value, so the
tail is cut ("…/home/projects/repoA; ..."). With a /tmp-length home it
is 165. This branch changes none of lane-start, tests/test_lane_helpers.sh,
    tests/test_lane_helpers_suite.py or tests/run.sh (git diff f87fd5a is
empty for all four), so the two failures do not come from it.
An earlier attempt (run1) ran nothing: zsh passed the --ignore list as one
argument and pytest exited 4.

…not read as the sweep does - a TREE row `unreadable` that requires recovery - instead of passing over it in silence

lanes-edit.sh, lane_reconcile, the legs' registrations: a declared leg
whose git toplevel is not the leg itself was skipped whether or not a
.git stood in it, so a leg with a .git of its own that git cannot read
(a gitfile naming no repository, or a .git where git answers the
assembly) said nothing, while the sweep's `leg` row for it is
`unreadable` and counted (exit 3, lane-end refuses). It now takes the
sweep's rule (probe_leg: toplevel not the leg, and a .git stands there)
and the sweep's word: one TREE row `unreadable`, in the sweep's words
("git could not be read through it (it has a .git of its own and git
could not read it: <git's answer>)"), counted under "require recovery",
so lane-start's recovery read counts it too. A leg with no .git (not
checked out) is passed over as before, and a path a sidecar already
names is not reported twice.

The verdict is not changed: the sweep counts that leg and goes on, and
an `indeterminate` here is what the sweep refuses on (exit 2) before it
reads the legs, which would hide its own count and break
test_t018_a_leg_git_cannot_read_is_counted_and_holds_lane_end.

tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py: a triad whose spec leg's .git
is a gitfile naming no repository, then an empty .git directory: one
`unreadable` row naming the leg, 1 require recovery, the verdict
ungraceful-stop, and the sweep still exit 3 with the leg `unreadable`
and counted; readable again, and deinitialized, the leg names nothing.

docs/README-lanes.md (T018 section): one sentence for the row.

A checkout with no project.yaml is untouched: the block runs only where
project-legs answered legs (lrc_lgrc 0).

lane-handoff's own leg loop (lane-handoff:2093-2095) skips such a leg
in the same way; it is not changed here.

Untested: the one verification run (run3, on this tree 2f23887) waited in
the shared pytest lock queue from 20:50Z and was stopped at 21:21Z, before
it took the lock, for the account swap; no count was taken.

…readable, as the sweep and lane-reconcile do; verification not run

lane-handoff, the legs' common directories (was lines 2093-2095): a
declared leg whose git toplevel is not the leg itself was skipped whether
or not a .git stood in it. So a leg with a .git of its own that git
cannot read (a gitfile naming no repository, or a .git where git answers
the assembly) said nothing, while the sweep's `leg` row for it is
`unreadable` and counted and lane-reconcile's TREE row (9f23a6b) is
`unreadable` under "require recovery". Worse, a tree `lane-worktrees add
--checkout <leg>` made from that leg was re-recorded under the ASSEMBLY
at the handoff, over the checkout `add` recorded.

It now takes the sweep's rule (probe_leg: toplevel not the leg, and a
.git stands there) and the sweep's words: one `- UNREADABLE LEG:` line in
the top block's WRITERS section ("`<leg>` is unreadable, the <decl> leg
of <dir>/project.yaml (<repo>): git could not be read through it (it has
a .git of its own and git could not read it: <git's answer>)"), a note on
stderr, and a count (`legs: N of the assembly's legs under <dir>
unreadable`). As lane-reconcile keeps its verdict for it, the lifecycle is
not held SWAPPING for the leg itself: the poll looked everywhere it
looks. writer_checkout files no guessed checkout while a leg is
unreadable: a tree of no readable leg's repository, not of the
assembly's own and recorded under no checkout of its own repository is
named and NOT recorded, so the leg `add` recorded stays, and the lane
stays SWAPPING for that tree (the existing "no checkout can be vouched
for" rule). A leg with no .git (not checked out) is passed over as
before. A checkout with no project.yaml, or one naming no leg but
itself, never runs the leg loop: single-repository output is unchanged.

docs/README-lanes.md: the handoff paragraph says so.

tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py:
test_t018_the_handoff_reports_a_leg_git_cannot_read_as_the_sweep_counts_it,
beside the reconcile one: the spec leg's .git a gitfile naming no
repository, then an empty .git directory: one UNREADABLE LEG line, the
note and the count, the lane SWAPPED, the reconciliation `unreadable`, 1
require recovery and `resumable`; a tree `add` made from the spec leg
keeps the spec leg as its checkout, named and not recorded, the lane
SWAPPING; readable again, nothing named and SWAPPED. The deinitialized
leg test now also holds that a leg with no .git is never `unreadable`.

VERIFICATION NOT RUN. The one run of the T018 selection (verify.sh, run4.log,
head 9f23a6b, index tree 0b691c8) waited for the shared pytest lock
behind other lanes' runs from 21:59:32Z and ended exit=143 (a SIGTERM
this writer did not send) at 22:26:46Z before any test ran; an account
swap was called at 22:20:05Z. So this commit and 9f23a6b
are both UNTESTED. Before this commit: bash -n lane-handoff is clean,
the test file parses. The next run on this tree verifies both.

…leg's, names a tree git cannot read, and says what it withheld (review of bf2a220, S1, S2, N1-N4)

S1. lane-handoff, writer_checkout: while a leg was unreadable, every
tree not of the assembly's own repository was withheld, a worktree of an
unrelated repository in the lane's own root included, so the lane stayed
SWAPPING on every handoff and those records went stale. Now a tree is
withheld only where it could be of that leg's repository: its common git
directory cannot be read, or lies physically inside the assembly or its
git directory (.git/modules/<leg>, a leg's own .git) without being the
assembly's own, or the inventory records it under an unreadable leg. Any
other tree keeps the lane's dir, as when every leg reads.
Test: test_t018_an_unreadable_leg_withholds_no_tree_of_another_repository
(a worktree of a third repository, recorded before and made after the
leg broke; and one a record names under the unreadable leg).

S2. lane-handoff, poll_writer: `git rev-parse --git-dir || return 0`
dropped any tree whose .git git cannot read, so a damaged
.git/modules/<leg> took every tree of that leg out of WRITERS and the
count while the lane went SWAPPED. In an assembly (legs_state set) such
a tree is now listed and counted, UNREADABLE and (NOT recorded), added to
lc_inventory_missed, and named on stderr. A checkout with no project.yaml
naming a leg passes over it as before, so the goldens do not move.
Test: test_t018_a_tree_git_cannot_read_in_an_assembly_is_named_and_holds_the_lane_swapping
(modules/spec deleted after add --checkout spec, with a paired spec tree
the inventory names; and a single repository's tree, passed over).

N1. The UNREADABLE LEG line's clause now depends on whether any tree was
withheld ("the N tree(s) this handoff could not place are named above,
each marked (NOT recorded)", or "every tree this handoff polled could
still be placed, so none is withheld for it"), and a withheld tree's
WRITERS line is marked (NOT recorded). The leg rows are kept as
<leg> TAB <why> and written by top_block after the poll.
N2. lane-handoff's UNREADABLE LEG line and note, and lanes-edit.sh's
lane-reconcile TREE row for an unreadable leg, say "before relaunching
a writer onto a tree of its repository": a leg is the assembly's.
N3. docs/README-lanes.md says the leg count is stderr's `legs: N ...`
line, never WRITERS' (N found), and describes S1, S2 and N1.
N4. Test: test_t018_a_leg_tree_add_made_is_withheld_where_the_legs_git_is_an_empty_directory
(the empty .git directory, where git answers the assembly in the leg,
with a tree add made from it).
The existing handoff and reconcile unreadable-leg tests now also assert
N1 and N2.

bash -n passes on lane-handoff and lanes-edit.sh; the added lines use no
declare -A, ${x,,}, mapfile, readlink -f, <<< or [[.

Authoring smoke check only (the one verification follows on the final
head): the three new tests, the two changed ones and the handoff golden
test, each called once outside pytest with LANES_* and TMUX* unset, all
passed; the three new tests each failed against cf7db4a's tools, on the
withheld third-repository tree, the writer count and the (NOT recorded)
marker respectively.

…sis's §7 (items 3, 11 and a new 12 for M1)

docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md §7: a dated head note naming
comment 6240800023 on #186 (posted 2026-10-17T20:48Z), and each ruling
at its item:
- item 3: proposal 1 (the guidance) goes live now; proposals 2 and 3 go
live with the T018 PR, on the condition of the read-only before/after
measurement over the triads (IRRS, IRSS, MedxEHR, MedxGlass, openDox,
openXdox, openWallet and the codexFactory copies), main's tools against
T018's, and any verdict that flips to a refusal told to its owning
  lane before the landing;
- item 11: (ii), park's WIP commit carries a `Lane: <lane>` trailer, and
resume records the tree it rebuilds with `lanes-edit.sh set-lane-tree
  <lane> <path> --checkout <assembly>/<leg>`; both workBenches changes,
one workBenches issue linked from the T018 PR ("workBenches issue: to
  be linked"); the PR does not wait for it;
- item 12, new: the pre-PR review's M1, (a) as implemented in 4d4957d,
  with the two-lane regression test
  (test_t018_a_handoff_takes_no_other_lanes_paired_tree).
§6's 2026-10-13 note now says the M1 ruling was made, and where.

docs/README-lanes.md: the two T018 sentences that called these rulings
pending now say they were made, and the parked-tree check before
lane-end stands until the workBenches changes land.

Brings in 27b5c89 (lane-start's #138 fences) and 83d2690 (#199, the
handoff skill's commit block) on top of 2732d59. Neither touches a file
this branch changes: the two sides' file lists do not intersect, and git
merged with no conflict. The one cross-check that matters is
test_t018_the_legs_reader_is_lane_starts_rung_5_line_for_line, which
holds lanes-edit.sh's legs reader equal to lane-start's rung-5 lines:
those seven lines are byte-identical at 2732d59 and 83d2690. bash -n

TAIL fix), 19c2e25 (#232, tests/run.sh's lock owner), f685866 (#233,
the openRepoShape pin at v1.1.0, 190133d) and f595e44 (#229 item 22,
the hygiene rule on bench-root host paths) on top of 83d2690.

Both sides change lanes-edit.sh and docs/README-lanes.md, in disjoint
hunks: main's are `swapped`'s row spelling (Amendment 15) and its
manual paragraph, the branch's are project-legs, lane-reconcile's leg
and paired-root reads and the T018 section. git merged both with no
conflict. bash -n passes on lanes-edit.sh, lane-handoff, lane-start,

…e (measurement finding 1)

lane-worktrees, the report's _branches, _root_main and _aging iterated
`canonical + [g.path for g in legs if g.checkout]`. A leg whose .git is
a directory (a clone, not a submodule's gitfile) is also canonical, so
it was read twice: the read-only triad measurement of 2026-10-17
(finding 1) saw 8 branch rows printed twice on this workstation, and
_root_main would do the same for a leg whose main is ahead. _aging's
`seen` set hid it there only where the two spellings matched.

All three now read Report._checkouts(canonical): the canonical
checkouts, then the checked-out legs, each once by os.path.realpath,
first occurrence kept. With no leg checked out it returns canonical
untouched, so a single-repository report cannot move. _leg_cell also
matches a leg by real path, so the row kept (the canonical spelling)
still names its leg.

Test: test_t018_the_report_lists_a_leg_that_is_also_a_canonical_clone_once
(an assembly whose project.yaml declares two legs that are clones: the
code leg's unpushed branch, its aged rescue branch and the spec leg's
main ahead of origin each appear once, each naming its leg). It needs
no template. An authoring smoke check outside pytest: it passes on this
tree and fails on 69f0017's lane-worktrees, on the duplicated branch row.

…iene rule of #229 item 22 asks

f595e44 made tests/test_repo_hygiene.py refuse a committed path that
starts at the bench root, except inside a single-quoted grep pattern.
docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md had seven such lines (§0, §4.2,
§4.5, §4.9, §4.12 and two rows of §4.15). Each now says ~/projects/...,
the bench's projects directory, as f595e44 respelled the same path in
ideation/; the §4.15 grep pattern keeps the spelling it searched for,
under the rule's allowance. A dated note under the header says so.
host_absolute_path_hits over every file this branch adds or changes
now finds nothing.

  1 failed, 224 passed, 1 deselected in 4045.64s (1:07:25)
  exit=1 end 2026-10-18T05:34:13Z
The run queued behind other lanes' pytest from 03:42Z and took the
lock at about 04:26Z.

Every test of tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py,
tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py and tests/test_repo_hygiene.py
passed, both goldens unregenerated among them.

The one failure, tests/test_lane_helpers_suite.py::
test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes: the shell suite ended "4620 passed,
2 failed, 0 skipped, 0 pending". Both FAILs are lane-start row-stamp
tail cases of #180's group:
- log line 100, "...with clause (c)'s directory and window in the
tail, for the person reading the row" (repoA): the cell line is cut
  to "...home/projects/repoA; ..." (228 chars), so "; window " is gone;
- log line 1967, "...having found the checkout by its real directory
name, not the typed one" (repoCase): the cell line is cut to
"...no launch; dir ..." (123 chars), the whole path dropped.
Cause: lane-start's cut_to_line caps the state line at 230 characters,
cuts there and trims back to the last space, then appends " ...". The
"; dir <DIR>; window <ref>" tail comes last, and here <DIR> is about 110
characters (the run root under ~/.local/state/openRepoTools/tmp/...), so
the tail is cut: in repoA after the path, in repoCase inside it, where
trimming to the last space drops the path whole. Both "got" strings are
exactly that cut.
Not T018's: `git diff origin/main...HEAD -- lane-start
tests/test_lane_helpers.sh tests/test_lane_helpers_suite.py` is empty,
and T018's lanes-edit.sh hunks (usage, project_legs/assembly_legs,
lane_reconcile, a comment on lane_worktree_roots, the guard exemption,
the project-legs arm and the refusal list) touch neither set-row-state
nor the stamp. Lane 2 measured the same group failing on main's own tree
at a TMPDIR length of 86 (#186 comment 6244714538: repoA, repoA11b,
repoCase and repoMix); #215 (61a7378) moved only repoA11b to a short
fixed path, and repoA11b passed here. CI's tests job, with a short run
root, passes this test on main (83d2690: 1498 passed, 19 skipped;
f5c3bcd and 2cb14a9: success). Not re-run on main locally: the two cases
run only inside the hour-long shell suite.

This run covers 9f23a6b and bf2a220 (the unreadable-leg reads) and this
round: the S1, S2 and N1-N4 fixes (5d2c1c8), lane 1's rulings in §7
(9a8f175), measurement finding 1 (a4e0b17), the bench-root respelling
(a60cf1c), and the merges of main 2732d59, 83d2690, f595e44 (the
openRepoShape pin at v1.1.0) and f5c3bcd (cf7db4a, 107958c, 69f0017,
88ee9d9). The earlier run on 107958c (t018-verify-20261018T011535Z.log)
was killed at a session exit after one F (first in order:
test_the_lane_helper_suite_passes) and 176 passes, with no summary.

Correction to a60cf1c's message: the first of the seven respelled
lines is in §1 (Scope and method), not §0.

Main has since moved to 2cb14a9 and a41adb6; this head does not
include them.

Lane openRepoTools-3, 2026-10-18T20:5xZ, to lanes openRepoTools-1 and openRepoTools-4: lane 3 lands #228's four PRs as one merge queue, right after lane 4's queue.

Brett Heap's word at 20:3xZ approves this: "implment your recomendation … also use this as approval to merge when green for all merges thru v1.1.0". It is recorded as RULED in lane 3's log at 20:37:07Z.

The queue. It is built on lane4-queue-b/p7-230 (cda12e0, tree e24a7c9). Each prefix is tested by a workflow_dispatch run of tests.yml.

Prefix Branch Adds Commit Tree Run
q1 lane3-queue/q1-228pr1 #262, PR 1 (head fc8e37d) 788136b 561a15e 39164234173

q3 to follow PR 3, release.yml
q4 to follow PR 4, the release notes and README

Lane 3 will post q3's and q4's trees here once they are built, within about an hour.

How lane 3 lands it:

#246: 006 and #246 share no file, so lane 1 has two ways in. It is lane 1's choice; please say which here.

After #246: #252 still waits for #246, as lane 4 described. #255, lane 3's follow-up to #246 in v1.1.0, comes after #246.

(lane openRepoShape-2, 2026-10-19T11:53:32Z) Independent review of #246 (T018) at 5dd0df07 (tree ea4db0d), for lane openRepoTools-1's landing gate: LAND

I stopped at the urgent checkpoint, so the golden captures from main's tools, the probes on the merge and the lanes_index base check did not run. I rule on what did run; the gaps are under "Could not verify". The clone is clean and back at 5dd0df07, no mutant is applied, nothing was posted and I ran no rm.

Findings, most severe first. None blocks the landing.

  1. SHOULD (follow-up): a leg directory that cannot be searched or listed reads as absent, and lane-end then ends the lane over the lane's unpushed commit.

    • Where:
      • lane-worktrees:2040-2048, probe_leg: os.path.lexists(<leg>/.git) is False inside a directory with no search bit, so decide_leg (:2145) says absent, "not checked out here".
      • lane-handoff:2166 and lanes-edit.sh:13181: [ -e …/.git ] is false there, and the loop skips the leg with no word.
    • Repro (a throwaway assembly on the head):
      • The code leg holds a Lane: triad-1 commit that origin lacks. The sweep shows unpushed retire and exits 3.
      • After chmod 0600, and again after chmod 000, on the leg directory:
        • the sweep shows absent - and exits 0;
        • lane-reconcile reports 0 require recovery;
        • lane-handoff names nothing and the lane goes SWAPPED;
        • lane-end prints "nothing of lane triad-1's is left on disk" and writes ENDED.
    • Weight:
      • It is not a regression: main reads no leg at all.
      • It needs a leg directory the lane's own account cannot search.
      • It does break the rule the PR applies everywhere else: a read that failed is never an absent leg, and the paired root and its leg directories already refuse for exactly this.
    • Fix:
      • In probe_leg, a failed os.access(path, os.R_OK | os.X_OK) sets read_error, so the leg is unreadable and counted.
      • The two shell readers check -r and -x before their .git test and take the unreadable branch.
      • One test changes a leg directory's mode with the lane's commit in it, and expects the sweep to exit 3 and lane-end to exit 2.
  2. NIT: the three readers of the paired root disagree on edge inputs.

    • Where: lane-worktrees:2585 joins every declared leg path.
    • What differs, with Sweep._paired called directly:
      • a leg declared with an absolute path becomes a FOREIGN paired row of the leg itself;
      • ./code keeps the ./ in the row's path (001-a/./code);
      • a feature directory named with a leading dot is listed.
    • lane-handoff (case ''|/*) continue, ${lg_decl#./}) and lanes-edit.sh (awk $2 !~ /^\//, sub(/^\.\//, …)) skip absolute paths and strip ./, and their * globs skip dot names.
    • Fix: filter the sweep's list the same way.
  3. NIT: once merged, lane-handoff has two sections numbered 3a.

  4. NIT: docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md:698-699 still says "workBenches issue: to be linked". The issue is park.sh's WIP commit carries a Lane: <lane> trailer, and resume.sh records each tree it rebuilds under its leg, so openRepoTools' sweep and lane-end count a parked or resumed paired tree as its lane's (opensoft/openRepoTools#186, T018 §7 item 11) openBenches#166. The earlier delta review flagged this, and it is still open.

  5. NIT: the PR body's references into tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py are 17 lines stale since ea4db0d.

    • :258 is now :275, :448 is :465, :503 is :520, :597 is :614, :659 is :676, :729 is :746 and :841 is :858.
    • Fix: use the current lines in the squash message.

…nder set -u, and the #80/#85 test names b707bd7 as its red base

A fix round on #264, from its independent review. main 55aae16 (#246) is
merged in before this commit.

The check before step 1 was `case "$why" in`. In a shell running under
`set -u`, with no why given, that stopped the shell there: bash said
"why: unbound variable" and zsh said "parameter not set". It now reads
"${why-}". An unset why is no why at all: it passes, and step 4 writes it
"handoff", as lane-handoff does. The paragraph above the block says so.

tests/test_handoff_skill_80_85.py gains one case, under bash and zsh -f. It
runs the check and then step 4 in one `set -u` shell with why unset, and
expects no error and "handoff kind unknown" in both writes. The block's
marker is now its refusal text, so the case finds the old block and fails
on the real error. The docstrings now name b707bd7, where the red run was
measured, instead of 5e88a2c.

…nce closes with its operation, and a lane sidecar is valid only when whole (#252)

* A lane sidecar of the current schema is read and replaced only when it is whole (#115)

`lane_sidecar_schema_ok` asked one question, so a file whose first line is
`schema: 1` and that held nothing else passed it: the snapshot's reader printed
empty fields for it, the inventory's reader printed a row with an empty id and
empty counts (which `lane_reconcile` skipped, or read as `dirty 0, unpushed 0`),
and every writer renamed its own file over it.

The gate keeps its name and its call sites, and now also asks a record of the
current schema for every key its writer writes (not empty), the shapes the
readers decide with (`state` one of the four words, every `generation` a
number, a tree's `dirty` a number and `unpushed` a number or `unknown`, its
`path` absolute) and the id a tree record's file name gives it. Both writers
have written exactly these keys since #97 landed. The kind of record comes from
where it is filed; `LSS_WHY` says what failed.

A malformed record takes the unknown schema's path on both sides:
- every writer refuses it, exit 1, nothing written (`set-lane-state`,
`set-lane-tree` for the snapshot and the tree record, and the lifecycle
  follow-up of a STARTED/RESUMED/ENDED/RETIRED line);
- `lane_state_read` answers 10, `lane-state` exits 10 and says which of the two
10s it is, and `lane-reconcile` reads the state as `MALFORMED`, verdict
  `indeterminate`;
- `lane-trees` carries a tree record as a row named by its file, every field
  empty, schema `<malformed>`; `lane-reconcile` reports it `malformed-sidecar`,
counted toward recovery; `worktrees` lists it as `malformed sidecar`.

`lane_sidecar_put` asks the same of its temporary file before the rename, so a
record cut short as it was written is removed rather than renamed into place,
and `set-lane-tree` refuses a `--dirty` or `--unpushed` that is not a count with
64, so no writer files a record its own readers refuse.

No lock line moves: the four `if ! lane_sidecar_schema_ok` lines, every
`acquire_lock`/`lock_try`/`release_lock` and the lock blocks are byte-identical;
only the refusal messages beside them change.

* set-lane-tree's fence refuses a poll filed under an operation the lane has finalized (#114)

`SWAPPING -> SWAPPED` keeps the generation and the operation by design, so the
fence's two comparisons accepted a poll from operation O after O's own
finalizer had run, and the delayed reading replaced the inventory the commit
point closed. Every other transition advances the generation, so `SWAPPED` is
the one state in which a matching pair names a finished operation: a fenced
`set-lane-tree` now reads the lane's state with the pair, under the same mutex,
and is refused with 7 where it is `SWAPPED`.

#114 also offered "require SWAPPING". That would refuse a write the suite makes
on purpose (repoRC-5, section 11(c): a lane RUNNING after a resume records under
its current generation and operation), so the narrower rule is the one taken.
An observation filed under no transition is still an unfenced `set-lane-tree`.
#114's second item, the partial observation, has been a 64 since 8.12.

* lane-reconcile keeps the status of every read it rests on, and a failed one is never an empty one (#113)

- The holder ids: `lane_session_ids_read` unions the published row's and this
checkout's session ids and answers 1 where either copy could not be read (an
empty published register, or a register file that is there and cannot be
opened). That is `HOLDER unknown` and `indeterminate`, never an empty set that
`live_holder` answers 8 for and the verdict table reads as a crash.
- `branch.<b>.remote` in `lane_tree_now` gets the `case` its `merge` sibling
  has: a read that failed is 3 (`lane-tree-now` 1, `set-lane-tree` refuses),
never the fabricated local upstream `./<merge>`.
- `git worktree list --porcelain` in the lane's checkout keeps its status. A
failure makes the verdict `indeterminate` and names it; a recorded directory
that is NO repository registers nothing and stays an absence
  (`lane_no_repository`, `lane-worktrees`' `no_repository`, #170 G5).
- `lane-trees`' 10 for an inventory directory that cannot be listed, which this
read still swallowed after 8.12 and #157 item 4e, and a lane worktree root
that cannot be listed or searched, make the verdict `indeterminate` too.

#113's second item, the unreadable sidecar, has been its own row since 8.12.
Per-record failures stay rows counted toward recovery and leave the verdict as
it was, which is the line T018 (#246) draws for an unreadable leg.

* Test #113, #114 and #115 in the lane-start sandbox, every case red at 87a5e9d

tests/test_lifecycle_fail_open_113_114_115.py runs the real lane-start and
lanes-edit.sh in the sandbox of tests/test_lane_start_claude_current.py, as
tests/test_deferred_97_findings_157.py does. A read that failed is injected
by a `git` on PATH that passes every call through to the real one except the
one FAKE_GIT_FAIL names; the permission fixtures skip under root.

* Document #113, #114 and #115 in the manual and in the change's design and tasks

docs/README-lanes.md: the verdict table's MALFORMED and failed-read rows, the
fence's SWAPPED refusal, the whole-record rule and the counts' shapes, the
remote read, `malformed-sidecar`, and the reads whose failure is
`indeterminate`. design.md: decisions 26-28. tasks.md section 7: where each
remaining item was taken.

* lane-reconcile reads the holder ids through main's session_ids_checked (#67), not a copy of it (#113)

#67 landed on main with `session_ids_checked`: the published-union-local ids,
0 with them, 8 for none and 1 where either copy of the register could not be
read, on a `register_text_checked` that reports a failed `git show` or `cat`
itself rather than inferring it from an empty render. That is the read
#113 item 1 needs, so `lane_reconcile` asks it and `lane_session_ids_read`
goes: one implementation. An 8 goes on to `live_holder` as before; a 1 is
`HOLDER unknown` and `indeterminate`, as it was. The comments that named two
callers of the checked read now name three.

* lane-reconcile names a failed registrations read in the sweep's words, so lane-end still relays #170 G5's reason (#113)

The sweep asks lane-reconcile before its own reads and keeps the first
refusal. With #113 item 4 that first refusal is now the reconciliation's,
so a lane checkout whose .git is mode 000, or whose .git file points
nowhere, refused (2) as before but named "the worktrees git registers in
<dir> could not be listed" where test_lane_helpers.sh's #170 G5 cases
(and lane-end's relay of them) require "the worktree registrations of
<dir> could not be read". CI run 39141918371 failed those three cases on
33515f8. The reconciliation now says it in lane-worktrees' words, with the
exit status after it.

* A snapshot under a directory named trees is read as a snapshot, and set-lane-tree refuses a blank field with 64 (#115, review r1 of #252)

lane_sidecar_schema_ok told a snapshot from a tree record by where it is
filed, and asked */trees/*.yaml first. A case pattern's * matches /, so
under a control root with any directory named trees above it every
snapshot was asked a tree's keys and refused: lane-start wrote none,
set-lane-state exited 1, and lane-reconcile said no-state, the verdict a
launcher goes past. The snapshot's arm now comes first; no tree file is
named lane-state.yaml, since a tree id is c<cksum>-...

set-lane-tree refuses a --branch, --head, --upstream, --checkout or
--writer that is only blanks with 64, before the lock, as it refuses a
count that is not one. It used to fail at the rename with exit 1.

lane_no_repository asks git in the C locale, as lane-worktrees' git_env
does, so a translated git cannot turn an absence into a failed read.

worktree_rows' note no longer says a row's path always begins with /: a
row of a record that is not whole keeps the path the record names.

* Test a control root under trees, a blank set-lane-tree field and the C-locale read, each red at 36520b9 (#113, #115)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Document the malformed snapshot's 10, the lifecycle 64s, the kept path of a malformed row, and why a record's lane: is not compared (#115)

The manual's main exit table names the malformed snapshot under 10 and
the lifecycle arms' 64s. A <malformed> lane-trees row keeps the path the
record names, which may be relative, and not every field empty. Decision
28 says which arm the validator asks first and why a record's lane: is
not compared: rename-lane leaves it naming the old lane until the next
write.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* #219's two path-less sidecar cases read #115's whole-record rule: a record with no path: is a malformed tree, never read and never the marker (#115, #219)

Merged with main, CI failed two tests of #219 (lanes-index's reader)
in tests/test_lanes_index.py. Both plant a current-schema sidecar with
no `path:` and assert its branch appears in `lanes-edit.sh worktrees`.
Since #115 such a record is not whole: the listing reads no field of it
and names its row `malformed sidecar`, by the path it records or, with
none, by its file. The rows were still trees, counted and never NOT READ,
so #219's reader and its marker key are unchanged; only the branch text
the tests looked for is deliberately no longer read.

- test_a_tree_with_no_path_is_a_tree_and_not_an_unread_marker: the
path-less record is now asserted as a malformed row named by its file.
Its second record keeps the path of the lane's whole tree (it lacks
only `upstream:`), so two trees of one lane with one path stay two
rows, the clause the source can no longer reach with an empty path.
- test_a_tree_whose_branch_reads_like_a_marker_is_a_tree: the forged
branch is carried by a whole record (it gains a `path:`), so the
branch is read and still makes no marker.

… one, and a leg directory this account cannot search, or a dependency nested in one, is unreadable and never absent (fixes #255) (#271)

A follow-up to #246 (T018 of feature 004, the triad lane tooling) that must land **before the triad cutover (#186)**. It fixes the two sections of #255.

**The handoff names every inventory record that is not a whole schema-1 one, and a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable, never `absent`.** Both gaps broke #246's own rule, Amendment 7(d): a read that failed is never an empty one.

These readers run only in an assembly, a checkout whose `project.yaml` declares a leg, so main is not exposed before the cutover.

**What it fixes**
- **Section 1, the handoff's tree inventory** (`lane-handoff`, `paired_inv` and `pi_bad`):
  - **Before:** a `lane-trees` row counted as unreadable only where its path was empty. A record of another schema keeps its path, so it read as a record with an empty checkout, and the paired tree it names was polled as this lane's writer, with no NOT POLLED note.
  - **Now:** the row's schema, field 13, decides. A row whose schema is not `1` is named in the NOT POLLED note by its id, its schema and any path it keeps, the lane stays SWAPPING, and the row never reaches `paired_inv`. The `lane-trees` row format is untouched.
- **Section 2, a leg directory with no search permission:**
  - **Before:** its `.git` could not be tested, and each reader's `.git` test failed there exactly as for a leg that is not checked out. The sweep listed it `absent` and exited 0. `lane-reconcile` gave no TREE row. The handoff said nothing and re-recorded the leg's tree under the assembly. `lane-end` ENDED the lane over the lane's unpushed commit in the leg.
  - **Now,** in one set of words ("its directory cannot be searched, so whether it has a .git of its own could not be tested, and git could not read it: <git's first line>"):
    - **`lane-worktrees`' `probe_leg`** asks lstat for `<leg>/.git`. Only ENOENT or ENOTDIR is a leg with no `.git`, and any other failure sets `read_error`, so the leg counts `unreadable`: the sweep's exit 3, `lane-end`'s refusal, and the report's legs section.
    - **`lane-handoff` and `lanes-edit.sh`'s `lane_reconcile`** take their unreadable-leg branch where the `.git` test fails and the leg directory fails `-x`. The handoff gets an UNREADABLE LEG line, a count and a withheld tree. The reconciliation gets a TREE row `unreadable` that requires recovery.
    - **A leg directory that is not there at all** is still `absent`.

**What the fold-in adds.** Lane 3's independent review found the same failure in a reader the issue does not name. After the cutover, `code/upstream/openRepoShape` is exactly this kind of dependency.
- **A dependency nested in an unsearchable directory (`aae85a2`, the review's finding 1):**
  - **Before:** git lists a dependency nested in a leg as `-` (not initialized) and exits 0, not only where it was never initialized but also where it cannot search the directory: at mode 000, at read-without-search, or under a directory it cannot search. `assembly_checkouts` skipped every `-` line before it probed anything, so such a dependency got no row, the code leg read clean, the sweep exited 0, and `lane-end` ended the lane over the lane's unpushed commit in it.
  - **Now:** a `-` line is parsed as an initialized one is, and probed (`probe_uninitialized`). It becomes a row only where the read failed, an `unreadable` row, counted, in the words `probe_leg` already gives. A directory that is not there, or one that is empty and can be searched, is a dependency never initialized and still adds none.
- **A dependency cloned by hand (`a16e534`, i):** a clone made into the directory of a deinitialized dependency is still listed `-`, so the sweep skipped it and `lane-end` ended the lane over the lane's unpushed commit in it (measured). It is now read like an initialized dependency: a row, `unpushed` there, counted, exit 3.
- **The describe-suffix trim (`a16e534`, ii):** git prints a describe suffix only on a ` ` or `+` line, never on a `-` line. A dependency never initialized at `upstream/dep (1)` was read as `upstream/dep`, which made a second row for the initialized dependency beside it and left `dep (1)` unread. The trim now applies to the initialized branch only.
- **The review's two test gaps (`c67f7a6`):**
  - **MS6:** the unknown-schema test now runs for schemas `2` and `10`, so a rule that matched the schema by its first character reads `10` as a schema-1 record and fails.
  - **MS5:** a record that files a tree id and no path is named in the NOT POLLED note by its id and schema, its tree is no writer of the lane's, and nothing is filed over it. A record this account cannot read (`<unreadable>`, no path) is named the same way.
- **The docs (`c67f7a6`, `a16e534`):** `docs/README-lanes.md` says what the sweep does with a dependency git lists as not initialized, and #255's own added text is reflowed where its insertion left ragged lines.

**The branch.** `fix/255-unreadable-inventory-and-leg-pr` is `a16e534` on main `55aae16`: 7 files, 674 insertions and 30 deletions.
- **Lane openRepoTools-2's two commits, cherry-picked:**
  - `13397aa` (from `ba13d21`): the two fixes, in `lane-handoff`, `lane-worktrees` and `lanes-edit.sh`, with four tests;
  - `e678c61` (from `523b381`): `docs/README-lanes.md`'s T018 section, `docs/triad-lane-tooling-analysis.md` section 7 item 11 naming opensoft/openBenches#166, and `lane-handoff`'s T018 section heading, now `3b`.
- **Lane 3's three fold-in commits:** `aae85a2`, `c67f7a6` and `a16e534`.
- **Why a cherry-pick:** #246 landed as the squash `55aae16`, so a merge of main into lane 2's branch conflicts in all seven files. The PR is the two commits cherry-picked onto main, with no force-push anywhere. Their diff equals `git diff 5dd0df0 523b381` (the same patch-id), and their tree at `e678c61` is `1a46c72`, the tree the reviewer computed.

**Tests.** There are 11 `test_255_` functions: lane 2's four, and the fold-in's seven. Under **Runs**, six of the seven fail under a mutant of the code they hold. The seventh, the unreadable record, needs no #252.
- **Lane 2's four,** each failing on `5dd0df0`'s tools and passing here:
  - `tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py`: `test_255_a_leg_directory_that_cannot_be_searched_is_unreadable_and_holds_lane_end`;
  - `tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py`: `test_255_a_leg_directory_that_cannot_be_searched_is_unreadable_in_the_handoff_and_reconcile`, `test_255_an_unknown_schema_record_is_named_in_the_handoffs_not_polled_note` and `test_255_a_malformed_record_is_named_in_the_handoffs_not_polled_note`. The `<malformed>` row comes from a fake `lanes-edit.sh`, so this test does not wait for #252.
- **The fold-in's seven:**
  - `tests/test_triad_lane_tooling.py`: a nested dependency's directory at mode 000 and at 0600, and beneath a directory that cannot be searched, each holding the sweep and `lane-end`; a dependency never initialized, which adds no row; a dependency cloned by hand, read as `unpushed`; and a dependency at `upstream/dep (1)`, read by that path;
  - `tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py`: the tree id with no path, and the unreadable record.
- **Where they live:** the issue asked for them beside T018's cases in `tests/test_lane_helpers.sh`. T018's fixtures live in the two Python modules, so the tests are there (the review's ruling).

**The order with #252 (the review's NIT 5).** `<malformed>` is #252's row, so the handoff names a truncated record only where lane 4's #252 is on main. The review asked for #252 first, and that is what happened: #252 merged as `00d52ae` at 2026-10-19T18:14Z, and q6k is built on it. With this PR on today's main, `<malformed>` records are named (the review measured it with #252 and #255 together, under **Review**).

**Follow-ups, not in this PR:**
- a declared leg under an unsearchable parent (the review's ruling on lane 2's doubt: a follow-up);
- a leg at mode 0100, searchable and not listable, which reads `clean` (finding 4, estate-wide; lane 3 proposes it to Brett Heap for v1.2.0, #255 6272494888);
- the top block's contradiction for a paired tree that only a broken record names (finding 3; proposed for v1.2.0 in the same comment);
- the handoff's wording on #252's refusal code (NIT 8; lane 3 proposes it as a v1.2.0 item, #255 6272494888).

**Runs**
- **The record, q6k** (branch `lane3-queue/q6k-255-on-q5k`: q5k + this head `a16e534`, on main `677acc0`, tree `1149aeb`, with its conflict with #283 resolved as in `fcd3cce`): `tests.yml` run 39373762988, green. This is the run of record for the landing.
- **An early read, q3a** (`dce6ffb`, branch `lane3-queue/q3a-255-on-q2f`: PR 2's prefix q2f, `aeadabe`, + lane 2's two commits alone, at `e678c61`; tree `47413c4`; on main `55aae16`): run 39289273676, green on every job, the shell suite included.
- **The fold-in writer's selection at `a16e534`:** `-k "test_255 or triad or lane_worktrees or repo_hygiene"` gave 421 passed (logs in `briefs/ort3-255-should1-work/` in lane 3's tree).
- **The fold-in's mutants:** the writer ran seven and each fails a `test_255_` test.
  - The finding-1 fix reverted (FX0), and two variants of it: every `-` line a row (FX1), and a `-` line asked of `probe_leg` alone (FX2).
  - The two later rulings reverted one at a time: the hand-cloned case (RV1) and the describe-suffix trim (RV2).
  - The reviewer's MS5 and MS6.

**Review.** Lane 3's independent reviewer gave **LAND** on `523b381` (`briefs/rv-255-final-20261019.md` in lane 3's tree, posted on #255 as 6272494888). Both fixes do what sections 1 and 2 ask, in every reader named.
- **What it ran:**
  - the four new tests fail on `5dd0df0` for the right reason and pass on `523b381`;
  - 17 of 19 mutants are killed, and the two survivors, MS5 and MS6, are low-impact (the fold-in's tests now kill both);
  - with #252 (`3ffefce`) the fix merges cleanly, and against the real `lanes-edit.sh` the handoff names the `<malformed>` record, in 5 of 5 cases. On that tree, main + #252 + #255, the selection `-k 'test_255 or triad or lifecycle_fail_open or repo_hygiene or lane_worktrees'` gave 457 passed;
  - the shell suite on that tree gave 4889 passed and 2 failed, `test_lane_helpers.sh:1269` and `:8548`, both in `lane-start`'s row stamp. The reviewer takes them as its sandbox's 106-character path reaching the 240-character `ROW_STATE_CAP`, and neither #255 nor #252 touches `lane-start` or the cap. q3a is green on every job, the shell suite included.
- **What lane 3 did with the findings:**
  - finding 1, a SHOULD, and NITs 6 and 7: folded in, above;
  - finding 2, a SHOULD: the cherry-pick, above;
  - findings 3 and 4, and NIT 8: the follow-ups, above;
  - NIT 5: the order with #252, above.
- **The reviewer's re-check of `e678c61..a16e534` is LAND (#271 6277159862).**

**Landing:** Brett Heap's decision 4 on #228 ("Yes, merge when green (Recommended)"), and his word of 2026-10-18T20:3xZ, "use this as approval to merge when green for all merges thru v1.1.0".
- Lane openRepoTools-3 lands the queue in one order: #262, PR 2, PR 3, PR 4, T025's docs PR, then #255.
- This PR squash-merges after an independent review, once Linux CI is green on the exact tree main will have after its squash. The record is a queue run of `tests.yml` on lane 3's prefix branch, under **Runs**.
- #255 is last in the queue. q6k is q5k plus this head, so PRs 2 to 4 and T025 are beneath it.
- When its turn comes, lane 3 pushes a head that merges main into `a16e534` with q6k's tree, as a fast-forward, so the tree under review is the tree that was tested.

Lane: openRepoTools-3

Landed by lane openRepoTools-3 as queue prefix q6k (tree 1149aeb, tests.yml run 39373762988 green), on Brett Heap's word of 2026-10-18T20:37:07Z: "use this as approval to merge when green for all merges thru v1.1.0". Its conflict with #283 in tests/test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py is resolved as in the tested tree fcd3cce, which keeps both blocks. Independent re-check of the fold-in round e678c61..a16e534: LAND (#271 6277159862).

… 1.1.0 and list, by area and from the squash titles of aaa7bc8..a42946e, what else changed on main since v1.0.0 (#228) (#293)

Part of #228. It brings `docs/release-notes/v1.1.0.md` up to date on main: first on `a42946e`, as lane 3 asked on Brett Heap's word (#228 comment 6303608345, the section for lane openRepoTools-2, task 1), then with lane 3's review of `d8a349d` (comments 6314185715 and 6314529807 on this pull request), with the lines for the three changes that landed after `a42946e`, and with the line for #296, which landed right before this pull request. It is one file, changed in two commits (`d8a349d` and `bebb77d`), 59 insertions and 4 deletions against main.

Lands last before rehearsal D's freeze; lane 3 reviews and merges it (#228 6303608345)

**What changed**
- **Lane 3's review is applied,** in the second commit:
  - **The line on #255 and #271** no longer says that `lane-reconcile` and `lane-handoff` read a dependency nested in a leg, since only the sweep and `lane-end` do. It says that a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable and never `absent`; that a dependency nested in a leg whose directory, or one above it, it cannot search is unreadable to the sweep and `lane-end` too; and that one known gap remains, #272, where the sweep reads a declared leg beneath such a directory as `absent`, so `lane-end` does not hold on it. It also says NOT POLLED where the tool prints it, and it says that the item closes two gaps in #246, where it said "both gaps" with nothing before it to refer to.
  - **The line on #280 and #283:** an `awk` exits and does not "return", and the sentence on a status of 0 or 8 is gone, because a reader of the notes cannot act on it.
  - **The line on #214:** the fence passes a local commit only when it adds or changes a register or handoff file, and never checks whose it is, so the line no longer says "the lane tooling's own".
  - **The counts in the `<other-changes>` item:** the pin's line (#233) is in the list, so the list carries 44 of the 53, and the other 9 have their lines under "What 1.1.0 adds", not 43 and 10. The item says "the openRepoShape pin" where the runner pin of #296 could be taken for it.
  - **The milestone item** names #247, so it lists the six entries the milestone held on 2026-10-20.
  - **#209 is not tests-only.** Its `-e` fixes `lanes`' stderr filter under macOS's BSD `grep`, so it moves from the test suite to the lane area, after #208's, and its one line there also carries its test changes: the `repoG#8` assertion and the count of bash files in prose. It is cited once.
- **Lines for the changes after `a42946e`:** #263 (`d9065df`), #289 (`fb2cf36`) and #294 (`acc89ea`, which closes #292) landed on 2026-10-21, from 11:28Z to 11:30Z. Each has a line in its area, worded from its squash commit and its description: #263 and #289 under "The register and `lanes-edit.sh`", and #294 under "`lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end`, the name guard and their helpers".
  - **#296 has its line too,** last under "The test suite and its checks": CI and the release workflow run on `ubuntu-24.04`, because `ubuntu-latest` is now Ubuntu 26.04, and `macos-latest` is unchanged. It landed right before this pull request, as `5afba4a`.
- **"What 1.1.0 adds" gains two lines,** after the annotated-tags item. They are for the three entries that closed in the v1.1.0 milestone after the draft was written:
  - **#255,** fixed by #271: the lane tools name what they could not read in a triad's legs. `lane-handoff` names every tree-inventory record that is not a whole schema-1 one, and a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable and never `absent`. Only the sweep and `lane-end` also see a dependency nested in such a leg, since `lane-reconcile` and `lane-handoff` read declared legs only, and #272 stays open as the known gap.
  - **#280,** fixed by #283: `lane-handoff` reads the lane's lifecycle whole and parses it afterwards, so an `awk` that exits early can no longer turn `lane-state`'s SIGPIPE into a lifecycle that could not be read.
  - #283 is #280's pull request, so the three numbers make two lines. Each line cites the issue and its pull request, as the hook-pair line does for #237 and #247.
- **"What else changed since v1.0.0" is drafted** from `git log aaa7bc8..a42946e`, which is 53 squash commits, one pull request each and no merge commit. It is grouped by area, one line each, and each line ends with its pull request. It lists 44 of the 53: the pin's line (#233) at its head and 43 by area, as 4 on the estate commands, 10 on the register and `lanes-edit.sh`, 11 on `lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end` and the name guard, 6 on the handoff and its skill, 1 on the lane tools in a triad's legs (#246), 9 on the test suite and its checks, and 2 on the triad migration's records.
  - **The other 9 are accounted for elsewhere:** the package series of #228 (#262, #267, #268, #269, #270 and #284) is covered by #228's lines, and #247, #271 and #283 have the lines above.
  - **The lines added on 2026-10-21** are for the four changes after `a42946e`: #263 and #289 on the register and `lanes-edit.sh`, #294 on `lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end` and the name guard, and #296 on the test suite and its checks. The areas now hold 47 lines, one for each of 47 pull requests, and #233's line at the head of the list makes 48.
  - **The list is redone at the tag.** It is drafted from the squash titles only.
- **"Before the tag" is updated in three items:**
  - `<pr-count>` gives the count at `a42946e`, which is 53;
  - `<other-changes>` says what was drafted, which 9 pull requests have their lines under "What 1.1.0 adds", that the lines for #263, #289, #294 and #296 were added on 2026-10-21, and what is left to do at the tag; the placeholder's own line now stands for the changes after `a42946e` that have no line above;
  - the milestone item names the six entries the milestone held on 2026-10-20: #228 still open, #237 closed by its pull request #247, #255 closed, and #280 closed by its pull request #283.

**Not added:** nothing that has landed. #296 landed right before this pull request and has its line. This pull request itself, and whatever lands after it, is what the `<other-changes>` placeholder stands for. None of #263, #289, #294, #296 and #292 is in the v1.1.0 milestone, which still holds the six entries of 2026-10-20.

**How this keeps the draft's rules**
- **One-line paragraphs:** every added line is its own list item, and none is wrapped.
- **References:** every reference above "Before the tag" is spelled `opensoft/openRepoTools#N`, with no bare `#N`, since the notes are published from another repository after the migration.
- **Placeholders:** `<other-changes>` stays as a named placeholder in code font, as the closing line of the list and as its checklist item. `<pr-count>` is unchanged apart from the drafting-time count.
- **The file's closing lines are untouched:** the self-naming last line stays last.

**Tests**
- **T023's verify command** passes: the last line names `openRepoTools-spec` and `docs/release-notes/v1.1.0.md`, `## Before the tag` is there, and so is `pipx install --force openrepotools`.
- **Coverage:** a script over `git log aaa7bc8..acc89ea`, 56 commits and no merge, finds each pull request cited above "Before the tag" except the six of #228's package series, which #228's lines cover. That is 46 by area, #233 at the head of the list, and #247, #271 and #283 under "What 1.1.0 adds". #296 is not in that range, and its line cites it.
- **Hygiene:** by grep over `tests/`, no test names this file. The two that read its content scan every tracked file, and both are in `tests/test_repo_hygiene.py`. The only other test that names `release-notes` is in `tests/test_release_workflow.py`, and it reads `release.yml`, not the notes. All of `tests/test_repo_hygiene.py` was run on the file, through `tests/run.sh` with every `LANES_*` and `TMUX*` variable unset:

  ```text
  -k 'repo_hygiene' -v
  collected 2933 items / 2696 deselected / 237 selected
  237 passed, 2696 deselected in 2.59s
  ```
- **Not run:** the whole suite. CI's `tests` job is the suite of record. This pull request's own runs on `bebb77d` went red on `ubuntu-latest`, which is Ubuntu 26.04, for the reasons #296 gives, because #296 was not yet on main. The record is lane 3's queue run over main, #296 and `bebb77d`, on `ubuntu-24.04` (below).

**Where the draft's rules left room, and lane 3's answers (comment 6314185715)**
- **Which section holds #255 and #280:** "What 1.1.0 adds", because the milestone is Brett Heap's scope for the release and #237 with #247 already sit there.
- **`<other-changes>` stays** as a closing placeholder after the drafted list, since this pull request itself lands after `a42946e`.
- **How much to list:** the tests-only and migration-record lines stay through the tag, because the check that every pull request has a line depends on them. If Brett Heap wants a shorter body, they fold into one line that still lists every pull request number.
- **Issues and pull requests:** the milestone lines cite both, and the area lines cite the pull request only.

**Lane 3's re-check of `bebb77d`** (#293 6315668503) is MERGE AFTER FIXES.
- **What holds:** every line lane 2 listed, the recount behind line 140 (44 of the 53 pull requests in `aaa7bc8..a42946e`, and 56 in `aaa7bc8..acc89ea`), the file's rules, and T023's verify commands.
- **One SHOULD and two NITs, all wording:**
  - line 45's sentence on a dependency nested in a leg, where "one above it" reads as a directory above the leg, which is #272's case. The text was lane 3's own;
  - "One known gap" in the same line;
  - line 74's last clause.
- **Why they wait:** lane 3 merges the notes as tested and carries the three fixes into the notes' final pass at the tag. A push here would cost another CI round while lane 2 is out of usage until 15:30Z, and the notes are edited again at the tag in any case.

Lane: openRepoTools-2

Landed by lane openRepoTools-3, as queue prefix `lane3-queue-u/p2-293` (tree `9b879ca`; tests.yml run 39595166877, green on `ubuntu-24.04`), right after #296. Before the landing, lane 3 merged main into the branch, so that its own checks ran over main with #296; the content is unchanged. Brett Heap's word, of 2026-10-20T22:5xZ: "merge all when green for all merges thru v1.1.0. use this for all lanes" (#228 6303614082).
