Jira: GRIF-1220

This PR fixes a regression from #2115, which moved the LCM bricks to redshift-jdbc42 2.2.9. It is the LCM counterpart of gooddata/msf#6568.

Problem

  • Driver 2.2.9 returns BOOLEAN columns as t/f from getString(). Driver 1.x returned true/false.
  • Source: the text branch of getString() (RedshiftResultSet.java#L2390) returns the server text unchanged. Oid.BOOL is not in the binary type list (RedshiftConnectionImpl.java#L474-L498).
  • RedshiftClient#realize_query writes every column with get_string. Brick input from Redshift with a BOOLEAN column now contains t/f.

Change

  • realize_query finds the BIT/BOOLEAN columns in the result set metadata. The driver reports bool as Types::BIT.
  • realize_query reads these columns with get_boolean and writes true or false. A NULL value stays empty.
  • The other columns and the other data source clients do not change.

Tests

  • A new #realize_query example in spec/unit/cloud_resources/redshift/redshift_client_spec.rb. The example fails without the fix.
  • bundle exec rspec spec/unit/cloud_resources/redshift/redshift_client_spec.rb passes locally on JRuby 9.4.12.1 and JDK 11.
  • The test is not yet done against a real Redshift.
  • This PR does not change the LCM version. Bump it in the release PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Redshift query results now export BIT and BOOLEAN values as true or false in CSV output. SQL NULL values remain empty fields, while other result columns continue to be exported as before.

…r 2.x

redshift-jdbc42 2.2.9 returns BOOLEAN as "t"/"f" from getString(). The 1.x
driver returned "true"/"false". realize_query writes every column with
get_string, so brick input with a BOOLEAN column changed from true/false
to t/f.

realize_query now reads BIT/BOOLEAN columns with get_boolean and writes
"true"/"false", or an empty value for NULL.

Walkthrough

Redshift query results now read BIT and BOOLEAN columns as booleans when writing CSV. SQL NULL values remain empty CSV fields. Other columns keep their existing string conversion.

Changes: Redshift CSV conversion

lib/gooddata/cloud_resources/redshift/redshift_client.rb, spec/unit/cloud_resources/redshift/redshift_client_spec.rb
realize_query reads BIT and BOOLEAN values as booleans and preserves SQL NULL as nil. Other columns use the existing string conversion. The specs check Boolean text and an empty field for NULL.

Explanation

The title names the fix (reading Redshift BOOLEAN columns as true/false) and the cause (driver 2.x). The raw summary confirms the main change: realize_query detects BIT/BOOLEAN columns and reads them with get_boolean, writing "true" or "false". The spec additions test this behavior. The objectives describe the same regression from the redshift-jdbc42 2.2.9 driver. The title is specific and matches the main change, so it passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

The new example made the describe block 79 lines long. The configured
Metrics/BlockLength limit is 60. A shared context now holds the driver
stubs for both blocks.

realize_query writes to GoodData.gd_logger and GoodData.logger. Other
specs leave rspec doubles in these global loggers, so the example failed
in the full suite with a leaked double error.

1st pass on 6a98d80.

Checked: the 2 changed files, the diff against master (the merge base is master 3864e19), the PR description, and git diff --check (clean).

Ran:

  • The real RedshiftClient#realize_query under JRuby 10.1.2 on JDK 21, with the real redshift-jdbc42 2.2.9 jar. The server was a local fake that speaks the Postgres wire protocol. It sends a BOOL column as t/f, a varchar column that holds True/False, an int column, and a last row with NULL in the BOOL and varchar columns.
    • master, before this PR: CSV rows t,True,1, f,False,2, ,,3.
    • this head: CSV rows true,True,1, false,False,2, ,,3.
    • The varchar and int columns do not change. A NULL BOOL stays empty.
    • The calls get_boolean, was_null, get_column_type and Types::BIT all resolve on the real classes. The new spec uses doubles, so it cannot show this.
  • CI at this head: the job unit-tests passes on 7 interpreters (Ruby 2.5, 2.6, 2.7.6, 3.2.1, and JRuby 9.2.21, 9.3.14, 9.4.12.1). I did not run the spec myself, because rspec is not installed for the JRuby that I have.
  • The fake server is not a real Redshift. The test against a real Redshift that the PR description asks for is still to do.

Approved on 6a98d80. No REQUIRED item and no OPTIONAL item is open. The test against a real Redshift is still to do before production.
