fix(chat): translate media parts on native bridges and download URLs the upstream cannot read - #1314
Conversation
… inline
Where the target upstream cannot reference a media URL itself (Bedrock
Invoke and Converse, Claude on Vertex AI, http:// toward Anthropic or
Gemini, or an https:// URL Gemini cannot type), the gateway now downloads
it and sends the bytes inline instead of refusing the part.
The download only reaches publicly routable addresses: every address the
name resolves to is checked and the connection is pinned to them, the
same for each manually followed redirect hop (at most 10). New startup
block upstream.media_fetch { enabled, allowed_hosts, max_bytes }.

Explanation
Category 1 — CRITICAL.
crates/aisix-gateway/src/content_part.rs:302-312implementsdisplay_uriby removing only query and fragment data. It preserves URL userinfo. A URL such ashttps://user:password@example.com/image.pngcan therefore exposepasswordin provider 400 responses and in the warning atcrates/aisix-gateway/src/media_fetch.rs:306-310. The changed media-fetch failure path callsdisplay_uriagain atmedia_fetch.rs:532-562. URL parsing accepts this URI form, so the exposure is introduced by this pull request. The existing test covers query redaction only (content_part.rs:456-459). Category 2 — No issues found in the changed code. Category 3 — No issues found in the changed code. Category 4 — No issues found in the changed code. Category 5 — No issues found. The changed caller-selected client mapsverify: falsetodanger_accept_invalid_certs(true)and does not attach the upstream client identity. Category 6 — No issues found in the changed code. Category 7 — No issues found in the changed code.Resolution
Redact URL userinfo before any error or log uses. Parse the URL, clear its username and password, remove query and fragment, then truncate the sanitized value. Use the sanitized helper for all media rejection and download-failure paths. Add unit and end-to-end tests for basic-auth and percent-encoded userinfo, and verify that credentials are absent from both responses and logs.

Explanation
Major E2E coverage gap remains. The suite sends streaming requests for Anthropic, Vertex Gemini, Vertex Claude, and Bedrock Claude, but lines 539-577 use a JSON mock instead of valid SSE or Bedrock event-stream responses. Those tests ignore the client response and only inspect that a request reached the upstream. They do not verify status or streamed output. The streaming implementation has separate provider paths (Anthropic bridge lines 453-539, Vertex Gemini lines 1716-1785, Bedrock Converse lines 1216-1291). The suite also covers only Bedrock image and PDF downloads. It has no downloaded audio or video case for Bedrock, although the translator supports audio and video blocks (bridge lines 1506-1543).
Resolution
Add valid Anthropic SSE, Vertex SSE, and Bedrock Converse event-stream fixtures. Assert the client response status and streamed output. Verify media translation on streaming paths for direct Anthropic, Vertex Gemini, Vertex Claude, Bedrock Nova, and Bedrock Claude. Add Bedrock E2E cases for downloaded audio and video, including unsupported or invalid media responses and assertions that the upstream receives no request.

…ent the upstream client certificate - Downloads run under the end-to-end budget (the non-streaming one on a streaming dispatch) and the time they take is charged to the upstream call that follows. - The download client keeps the upstream trust roots but never the upstream mTLS client identity, which only operator-chosen peers see. - Every part naming a downloaded URL can take it, so a part that did not need the download cannot use up the one that did; system turns are scanned too, since the Anthropic translation carries a late system turn as a user turn. - Retries back off briefly, and an unresolvable host is not retried.

…charged on its own budget
A request's downloaded media and its inbound body share the configured request body limit. Past it the request gets the same 413 an oversized inbound body gets, in the caller's error envelope. With the default 0 there is no total cap, as for inbound bodies.
Native bridges (Bedrock Invoke and Converse, Claude on Vertex AI, Anthropic direct, Vertex Gemini) dropped every image, audio and file part of a chat request before it reached the upstream. The call returned 200 and the model answered without the image. That holds for
/v1/chat/completions,/v1/messagesand/v1/responses, streaming or not, since the latter two go through the chat intermediate form. This re-applies #1307 (reverted in #1310) and changes one thing in it: a media URL the upstream cannot read itself is now downloaded by the gateway and sent inline, instead of being refused.
What #1307 brings back: the shared
aisix_gateway::content_partreader and per-bridge translation. Inline data (data:URLs,input_audio,file.file_data) becomes each upstream's own media block. A part the upstream cannot take is a 400 that namesmessages[i].content[j], and never gets dropped. The system-only refusal that #1311 moved ahead of rail selection is kept.URL handling now works like this:
https://URL, and Vertex Gemini withhttps:///gs://plus a known media type, still pass the URL through as a reference (source.type: url/fileData.fileUri).http(s)gets downloaded: Bedrock (both rails), Claude on Vertex,http://toward Anthropic or Gemini, and anhttps://URL Gemini can't type. The bytes go out as base64 (Anthropic shape, GeminiinlineData) or raw bytes (Converse).gs://toward Bedrock) is still a 400.The download is default-deny for anything that isn't publicly routable: loopback, RFC 1918, CGNAT, link-local (incl. 169.254.169.254), 192.0.0.0/24, documentation/benchmark ranges, multicast/reserved, IPv6 unique-local/link-local/site-local, 168.63.129.16, and NAT64/6to4/IPv4-mapped forms of those. The check lives in the download client's DNS resolver. If any address in the answer is non-public, the whole answer is refused. The connection goes only to the addresses that were checked, so a rebinding name can't swap them, for http and https alike, with Host/SNI unchanged. An address literal is checked before the request. Redirects are followed by hand, up to 10, and each hop is checked the same way. Proxies from the environment are not used for this client, because a proxy would resolve the name past the check. Caller headers are never forwarded. The client keeps the upstream trust roots (
upstream.tls.ca_file), but it never presents the upstream mTLS client certificate to a caller-chosen host.Limits: each URL is capped at
max_bytes. Content-Length is checked first, then the body is counted while streaming. Downloads share the request's own end-to-end upstream timeout budget, the non-streaming one on a streaming dispatch. The time they take is charged to the upstream call that follows. A timeout or transport failure is retried, with a short backoff, up to 3 attempts in total within that budget. An HTTP error status is not retried. All downloads of one request also count, together with its inbound body, against the existingproxy.request_body_limit_bytes. Once the total would pass that limit, the request fails with the same 413 (request_too_large, in the caller's envelope) that an oversized inbound body gets. With the default0there is no total cap, the same as for inbound bodies. URLs in one request are fetched concurrently (up to 8), and a repeated URL is fetched once. There is no cross-request cache. The body is read into one buffer and encoded once, and its last use takes the buffer instead of copying it.The media type comes from the caller's explicit
format/mime_typeif set. Otherwise it comes from the responseContent-Type(unless that isapplication/octet-streamorbinary/*), then the URL extension, then magic bytes. If none of those works, the request is a 400.A failed download is a 400 in the entry's own error shape, naming the part and the reason. For a blocked address, the message points the operator at
upstream.media_fetch.allowed_hosts. Query strings and fragments are stripped from every URL echoed in an error. That now also covers the #1307 refusal messages.New startup config (defaults shown), annotated in
config.example.yaml/config.managed.yamland inconfig.reference.json:There is deliberately no switch that turns the address check off;
allowed_hostsis the escape hatch. An allow-listed host is still resolved once and pinned. A badallowed_hostsentry fails boot. The list also works asAISIX_UPSTREAM__MEDIA_FETCH__ALLOWED_HOSTS(comma-separated).Behaviour change on upgrade: requests with image/audio/file parts toward these providers now carry the media upstream, where it used to be silently dropped. A request whose media the upstream can't take (e.g. audio to Claude), or whose URL can't be downloaded, now gets a 400 instead of a blind 200. Nothing has to be edited. Operators who serve media from internal hosts need to list them in
allowed_hosts.Upgrade note for proxied egress: the download never goes through
HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY/ALL_PROXY, because a proxy would resolve the host past the address check. If a deployment's only internet egress is such a forward proxy, it cannot download media URLs. URL parts toward upstreams that cannot read the URL themselves now fail with a 400 instead of being silently dropped. Inline parts (base64,data:URIs) are unaffected, and so are URLs the upstream reads itself (Anthropichttps://, Geminihttps:///gs://with a known type). With a request body limit set, a request that used to pass because its media was dropped can now get a 413 once the downloaded bytes are counted.
Out of scope: the request-time token estimator still estimates remote URLs without downloading them. Prompt-cache marker work is separate.
Tests:
tests/e2e/src/cases/chat-media-parts-native-providers-e2e.test.tsis restored from #1307 (it fails on main, where the parts are dropped) and extended with a local media server on loopback. It covers download per fetching family (Bedrock Converse on all three entries, the Bedrock Claude Invoke and ConverseStream rails, Claude on Vertex, Anthropic and Gemini overhttp://), type from magic bytes, dedupe, and default-deny across all five families. The same server via127.0.0.1is refused whilelocalhost:<port>is allow-listed, with no request reaching it. It also covers a redirect to a private address refused and to an allowed one followed, too large, 404 not retried with the signed query not echoed, a non-http scheme, andenabled: false. Unit tests inmedia_fetchcover the address classification, allowlist parsing, the resolver-level refusal, the cap, hop-by-hop redirects and sniffing. The chart side of the new config block is api7/api7-helm-chart#409, held for the release that ships this.
