  • Every provider implements ICloudFilesLifecycle (new in PrimitiveTypes 10.0.1), so an app can read the rules its bucket uses to delete files by age.
  • S3 fix: adding the temp rules at startup replaced the bucket's whole lifecycle configuration, deleting any other rule on it. The rules are now merged.
  • Azure: the temp rules are created as the storage account's lifecycle management policy, only when SubscriptionId and ResourceGroupName are set. Without them nothing changes, and the rules are reported as unavailable.

Needs SimplyWorks.PrimitiveTypes 10.0.1: merge only after SW-PrimitiveTypes #132 has published it, or the publish run on main fails.

📝 Summary

Summary

  • Adds ICloudFilesLifecycle reporting for Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, S3, and local-test providers. Each provider maps supported age-based deletion rules to the shared lifecycle model.
  • Adds automatic Azure account-policy rules when SubscriptionId and ResourceGroupName are configured.
  • Changes S3 startup to send the full lifecycle rule set when it adds or replaces its temporary-prefix rules. This preserves unrelated bucket rules.

Risk level

risk:medium

Azure and S3 lifecycle policies can delete stored data. Azure updates an account-level policy; S3 replaces the bucket’s full lifecycle configuration on write. Validate the resulting rules and the identity permissions before deployment.

Security-sensitive areas

Azure Resource Manager access uses DefaultAzureCredential or a configured managed identity. The identity needs permission to read and update the storage-account lifecycle policy. Shared-key access alone cannot manage that policy.

Test coverage impact

Adds conversion and policy-rule tests for Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and S3. Test execution results were not provided.

Deployment and operational concerns

  • Azure lifecycle management requires the subscription and resource-group settings. Without them, lifecycle reporting is marked unavailable and Azure automation does not run.
  • Azure and S3 may write lifecycle configuration during provider registration. Review existing rules and granted permissions before enabling automatic lifecycle management.
  • The project updates SimplyWorks.PrimitiveTypes to 10.0.1 and pins Azure.ResourceManager.Storage to 1.6.2. The PR objective reports that CI requires PrimitiveTypes issue #132 to be published and CI rerun; completion is not established by the supplied evidence.

Walkthrough

The PR adds lifecycle reporting across cloud providers, Azure automatic management of temporary-prefix deletion rules, and an S3 update that preserves unrelated lifecycle rules.

Google, Oracle, Local, and S3 services expose lifecycle information through ICloudFilesLifecycle. Provider converters map eligible deletion rules, and registrations resolve the lifecycle interface to the provider service. Tests cover rule conversion and filtering.
Azure lifecycle policy setup and reporting
README.md, CLAUDE.md, SW.CloudFiles.AS/*
Azure options add subscription, resource group, and storage account settings. When automatic management is enabled and the required ARM settings are available, startup reads the policy, adds or replaces container-scoped temporary-prefix rules, and writes changes while retaining other rules. Azure lifecycle reporting converts matching policy rules or marks reporting unavailable when ARM settings are insufficient. Tests cover policy updates and conversion.
S3 rule merging and lifecycle integration
CLAUDE.md, SW.CloudFiles.S3.Extensions/IServiceCollectionExtensions.cs, SW.CloudFiles.S3/S3LifecycleRules.cs, SW.CloudFiles.S3/SW.CloudFiles.S3.csproj, SW.CloudFiles.UnitTests/S3LifecycleRulesTests.cs
S3 writes the complete lifecycle configuration after adding missing or disabled temporary-prefix rules. Existing unrelated rules are retained. Tests cover preservation, replacement, and the no-change case.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b69ed

Concurrent Azure applications sharing a storage account can silently remove each other's temporary-file deletion rules, leaving temporary files without automatic cleanup. Protect the account-wide policy update before merging, or explicitly accept this concurrency limitation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b69ed

S3 now preserves existing rules during ordinary updates. Azure introduces a new account-wide policy writer, however, and concurrent startup updates can overwrite another container’s deletion rules. This can undermine configured retention controls. Configuration gates and Azure permissions limit reachability, but do not prevent conflicting policy updates.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new Azure startup writer does not preserve account-policy ownership under concurrency. Two containers can read the same policy, independently add their rules, and submit whole-policy replacements; the later write can remove the earlier container’s deletion rules or an intervening administrative update. This can disable retention controls across containers sharing that account. Preserving unrelated rules in a local snapshot does not prevent this outcome, and restarting one container cannot reconstruct unknown rules already removed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The Azure mutation targets one configured storage account’s entire lifecycle policy. Generated additions are limited to one container’s temporary prefixes, but a stale whole-policy replacement can affect deletion controls for other containers in that account. Exposure across additional accounts depends on deployment configuration and credential permissions, which were not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is conflicting authorized policy writers, not a demonstrated anonymous attack: two startup instances can read the same policy and the later replacement can remove the earlier instance’s deletion rules. Normal deployment concurrency is sufficient; no attacker-controlled request-to-policy path was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Blob access targets ServiceUrl using a shared key or DefaultAzureCredential, while ARM targets independently configured subscription, resource group, and account selectors. StorageAccountName can override account-name inference. The inspected code does not validate correspondence between these targets; correct alignment is a deployment responsibility, not evidence of an authorization bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Sequential Azure repetition skips enabled same-named rules and preserves unrelated rules present in its snapshot. After an intervening update is overwritten, however, another run only sees the surviving policy and knows its own container’s temporary rules. The scoped implementation has no restoration or reconciliation mechanism for other owners’ lost rules.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Assign the account policy a single authoritative writer, or coordinate every writer sharing it. Retain restorable policy snapshots and define reconciliation after interruption or conflicting updates. Uncoordinated retries alone should not be treated as lost-update protection.
  • proposed — Keep the management credential’s permissions scoped to the intended account and required policy operations, and validate deployment-level correspondence between the blob endpoint and ARM target before enabling automatic provisioning.

52-66: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Unable to determine whether the account-wide policy write can overwrite concurrent updates because the required repository source for EnsureLifecycleRules and AddTempRules was not available in the supplied evidence. The SDK inspection only shows CreateOrUpdate overloads; it does not establish the server-side concurrency behavior or the policy scope.

Use a conditional update for the account-wide lifecycle policy.

EnsureLifecycleRules reads the complete policy, adds this container's rules to the local copy, and writes the complete policy. Two containers on the same account can read the same version. The later CreateOrUpdate can replace the earlier container's rules. A post-write check does not prevent a later writer from replacing a verified policy.

Use an account-wide compare-and-swap update with the read ETag and If-Match. On 412, re-read, merge, and retry. Azure.ResourceManager.Storage 1.6.2 does not expose this overload, so use a supported ARM conditional request or an account-wide distributed lock.

Not changing this. Azure's managementPolicies API has no ETag or If-Match (checked API versions 2025-06-01 and 2026-06-01), so a conditional write isn't possible, and an account-wide lock is too much for a library. The window is two apps sharing one storage account starting at the same moment. If it happens, nothing is deleted by mistake: the overwritten app's temp files wait until its next start, which adds its rules back.
