Summary

  • A pin mismatch on one relay stayed invisible, because the pool stays up when any other relay connects.
  • The live handshake reports that transition once. A later handshake for that host arms the report again only after its signature proves the peer holds the pinned key, so replaying the genuine certificate cannot re-arm it. On the FROST node's relay sockets, the node stores an authenticated audit entry and emits RelayPinRejected.
  • Desktop event log and the web activity stream and signing log show it. CLI serve and the phone carry the verifier's single error log.
  • Rejections held for a missing subscriber are coalesced per host and reason and capped at 64. The pin-report holder keeps only weak handles to the node's event bus and audit log. The pin audit MAC carries its own domain tag.

Test plan

  • Pin mismatch and strict-missing are reported once, and a later handshake with a verified signature arms the report again
  • A replayed certificate whose handshake signature never verifies does not re-arm the report
  • A certificate that fails ordinary validation is not reported as a pin failure
  • A rejection that happens before anyone is subscribed is audited and delivered once; held rejections stay bounded
  • The pin-report holder does not keep the event bus or audit log alive
  • Web activity mapping test
  • cargo clippy on the changed packages with the CI feature set, warnings denied

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Relay certificate pinning rejections are recorded with the relay host and an explanation, such as a missing or mismatched pin.
    • Rejection details appear in the Signing Log and are included in exports, alongside the log’s verification indicator.
    • Relay pinning failures also appear in activity logs. If all relay connections fail, connection errors include pending rejection details.

Walkthrough

The change detects and classifies relay pin rejections, records them in the audit log, and publishes node events. Desktop and web application logs now include rejection details. The signing-log API and web interface return, display, and export pin-rejection records.

Changes

Relay Pin Rejection Reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin rejection classification and callback
keep-frost-net/src/pinning.rs, keep-frost-net/src/pinned_transport.rs, keep-frost-net/src/lib.rs
The verifier classifies mismatch and strict-mode missing-pin rejections. It invokes a configured hook once per host and reason until successful handshake proof clears the refusal. TLS setup can attach the hook.
Node reporting and authenticated audit records
keep-frost-net/src/node/*, keep-frost-net/src/audit.rs, keep-frost-net/src/lib.rs
Nodes audit and publish valid relay pin rejections. Reports are queued when subscribers are unavailable, and queued reports annotate connection errors if all relay connections fail. The bounded audit ring authenticates records and participates in verify_all.
Application and activity-log reporting
keep-desktop/src/frost.rs, keep-web/src/bunker.rs
The desktop logs rejection events as errors. The web bunker maps them to failed Frost activity logs with relay and rejection details.
Web signing-log response and display
keep-web/src/api.rs, keep-web/ui/src/lib/api.ts, keep-web/ui/src/App.svelte
The API returns pin rejections newest first. The web interface loads and exports them, displays their relay host and detail, and shows the verification indicator and Export button when either signing entries or rejections exist.

A rabbit heard the relay chime,
Pin reports arrived right on time.
The audit ring kept each detail,
While queued events crossed the trail.
Web logs showed what pins denied,
And exports carried facts inside.

🟡 Minor · Clear pin-refusal state only after the transport handshake succeeds. · pinning.rs:200

keep-frost-net/src/pinning.rs:200
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear pin-refusal state only after the transport handshake succeeds.

verify_server_cert clears the refusal state before rustls verifies the server’s handshake signature. A pinned certificate with an invalid CertificateVerify signature therefore clears the state even though client_async_tls_with_config returns an error. Because reconnect is enabled, a later pin mismatch can emit a duplicate rejection for the same refusal transition.

Move the reset to the successful return path of the pinned transport. Retain the verifier handle so the transport can clear the host only after the TLS/WebSocket handshake returns Ok.

Minor · Remove the synchronous info! from the pin-rejection hook path. · audit.rs:388-393

keep-frost-net/src/audit.rs:388-393
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the synchronous info! from the pin-rejection hook path.

PinReportHolder::report holds inner while it calls log_relay_pin_rejection. The hook runs on the TLS handshake thread, and its contract says it "must not block." The info! call writes through the synchronous tracing_subscriber::fmt() writer. If the stdout or stderr sink stalls, the handshake can stall with it, and the inner lock stays held. The authenticated record does not depend on this log line. The HMAC entry is pushed to the in-memory ring, and the RelayPinRejected event is sent separately.

Suggested fix
         let entry = RelayPinAuditEntry {
             timestamp_ms,
             relay_host: relay_host.to_string(),
             reason,
             hmac,
         };
-        info!(
-            relay_host,
-            reason = reason.as_str(),
-            hmac = %hex::encode(hmac),
- "Relay pin rejection audit entry"
-        );
         let mut ring = self.pin_rejections.write();

If this is the last info! use in keep-frost-net/src/audit.rs, remove the unused info import too. The repository runs cargo clippy with warnings denied.
