Problem

Side-chat permission defaults cannot follow the parent thread's mode. A user running parents in Auto or Full access must select the same mode for each side chat, or configure a fixed default that also applies to parents with different permissions. Refs #29966.

Change

Add an opt-in Inherit parent choice in Settings → Threads → Permissions → Side chats, at environment and project scope on web/desktop and mobile. The destination server copies the parent's current mode when creating the side chat, applies administrator limits, and stores a concrete child mode, including for its first turn. Later parent changes do not change existing children, and a child's own selection still applies. Supervised remains the shipped default.

Scope and approval

Depends on #29300. This branch preserves its configuration work and adds one inheritance commit. Until that PR merges, GitHub's cumulative diff includes the dependency. Review the inheritance-only diff separately; the original dependency head was 4e16435ffa79ab1bc3a29905a85066fedf0c8768, rebased here onto upstream e2bb9e63e129.

This uses the focused configuration exception: side chats and permission modes already exist, and the extension only adds an opt-in choice to the configurable default. It does not change product defaults, introduce another workflow, or loosen MCP read approvals. No prior maintainer approval is claimed.

Please ship this alongside #29300: a client that ships with only that PR would not recognize the new inherit-parent setting value. It should not be merged independently of its dependency.

Verification

  • Regression selection on the dependency head: 11 failed, 5 passed; with inheritance: 16 passed. Covers every parent permission mode, project/environment precedence, administrator ceilings, later parent changes, and an explicit child selection. Five focused provider-start cases also passed.
  • After rebasing, vp run check:changed upstream/main passed: format, lint, knip, GraphQL checks, 36 affected-package typechecks, 224 tests, and React Compiler checks. git range-diff confirmed that the reviewed inheritance commit was unchanged by the rebase.
  • Tested the real web client on Linux against isolated development state. Baseline feat: configure permissions for new side chats #29300 offered only fixed modes. Selected Inherit parent and reloaded: it persisted independently of the new-thread default. A /side child copied Full access and completed a free Replay (dev) turn. Changed the parent to Auto and ran another replay: the old child stayed Full access; a /btw child copied Auto and completed. Repeated /side creation after the rebase and observed Auto on the stored child.
  • Replay proves the client/server flow without spending a real-provider turn. Actual provider permission enforcement, native iOS/Android and Electron shells, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised in this session. Focused orchestration/policy tests cover concrete mode resolution and first-turn execution.

Observed runtime modes after changing the parent:

parent                              auto
first /side child                   full-access
new /btw child                      auto
new /side child after rebase auto

Before/after captures compare #29300 with this extension; evidence is uploaded to GitHub and is not committed to the source tree.

Before: fixed modes only After: opt-in inheritance
Before After

Persisted setting after reload · Side-chat interaction recording using Replay (dev)

Reviewed with review-loop: 1 round with Claude Opus 5.5. Reviewer verdict: approved. No blocking findings; the release-order note is recorded above.

Walkthrough

The change adds separate runtime permission defaults for new threads and side chats. Side chats can inherit the parent’s mode or use a configured mode, subject to managed runtime ceilings. Fork creation and first-turn handling use the resolved side-chat mode.

Changes: Side-chat permission settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Permission settings and contract
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/*, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsServerControlsRouteScreen.tsx, docs/user/*
Adds the project-scoped side-chat runtime setting and “Inherit parent” option. The Threads settings page exposes separate controls for new threads and side chats. Search entries and user documentation reflect the settings.
Managed runtime ceilings
apps/server/src/policy/managedSettings.ts, apps/server/src/policy/ManagedPolicy.test.ts, apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/ProviderReplayHarness.ts
Applies runtime ceilings to default and side-chat modes, preserves “Inherit parent,” and validates managed defaults. Tests cover ceilings, persistence, and settings setup.
Resolve and assign the fork mode
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadForkService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadFork.execution.test.ts
Resolves the project’s side-chat mode when planning a fork. Inheritance selects the source thread’s mode; the fork receives the resolved mode, capped at the managed ceiling.
Use the resolved mode on the first turn
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/useSideChat.ts
Removes the first-turn override to “approval-required” in the provider path. The web client uses the forked thread’s runtime mode when starting a turn.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(threads): let side chats inherit parent permissions" matches the main change in the changeset. The diff adds an "inherit-parent" value for sideChatRuntimeMode in the contracts, server settings, managed-policy clamping, the fork planner, and the web settings UI, and the orchestrator resolves the side chat's runtime mode from the parent thread. The title is specific, uses a conventional commit format, and is under 72 characters.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and each is filled in. The Problem section states the gap in side-chat permission defaults. The Change section explains the opt-in Inherit parent choice and the server-side behavior. Scope and approval cites the focused configuration exception, names the dependency on #29300, and states that no prior maintainer approval is claimed. Verification lists the test counts, the rebased check run, the manual Linux web test, and what was not exercised. The description includes the template's required evidence for UI changes (before/after screenshots and a recording). The template's opening comment asks for a conventional title; the title satisfies that. The description is long and includes some process detail, such as the review-loop and model attribution, but it is not off-topic or vague.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Restore the project-scope description for the "New threads" row.

The row now uses the static setting.description in every scope. The removed row in ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx used a project-specific text in project scope. In project scope, this row now says "Projects can override them." That text is wrong, because the user is already editing a project.

Select the description by scope.

Proposed fix
-  const { connectedEnvironments } = useSettingsScope();
+  const { connectedEnvironments, scope } = useSettingsScope();
+  const isProjectScope = scope.kind === "project" || scope.kind === "checkout";
-      description={setting.description}
+      description={
+        isProjectScope && setting.key === "defaultRuntimeMode"
+ ? "Permissions for new threads in this project."
+          : setting.description
+      }

As per coding guidelines for apps/web/src/**/*.{tsx,css}: the removed project-scope behavior should carry over when the row moves to a shared component.

Also applies to: 69-69

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified head 18d9c9c4ae9b6baba26c8557b716bebf8d9f4646 as-is on Linux. Used isolated development state, one background dev server at a time, Playwright from the repository, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the web client. The project was added through the app and pointed at the real git checkout. No mocks, fixtures, Replay provider, or demo data.

  • Reproduced on github/main at cefb544af3: a full-access parent's /side child started supervised and required approval before pwd. Threads settings had no side-chat default.
  • On this head, selected Inherit parent in Threads settings and reloaded. It persisted independently of the Full access new-thread default. A /side child inherited Full access and completed its first pwd without approval.
  • Changed the parent to Supervised and completed a parent turn in that mode. A new /btw child inherited Supervised and paused for approval before pwd; approving it completed the command. Earlier children remained Full access.
  • Opened an empty side chat from the panel under the supervised parent, selected Full access in the child's composer before its first message, and completed pwd without approval.
  • Ran the existing ThreadFork.execution and ProviderTurnStartService tests through blacksmith-check: 2 files, 65 tests passed. The head also has 31 successful CI checks. No source changes or pushes were needed.

Runtime transcript, checked against stored thread/run state and the real Codex session policies:

main: parent=full-access, child=approval-required; pwd waited for approval
PR: inherit-parent + full-access parent -> child=full-access
    Codex gpt-6.1-sol: approval_policy=never, sandbox=danger-full-access
    pwd -> /home/user/t3code (exit 0), first turn completed
PR: supervised parent -> new child=approval-required
    Codex gpt-6.1-sol: approval_policy=untrusted, sandbox=read-only
    pwd waited for approval, then completed
PR: existing full-access children remained full-access
PR: explicit Full access child selection -> first turn completed without approval

Before, main:

main threads settings without a side-chat permission default

After, PR:

PR threads settings with inherit parent and independent new-thread default

real Codex side-chat first turn runs pwd without approval

Not verified

Native iOS/Android and Electron shells were not run on this Linux browser session. Remote, relay, tunnel, multi-environment, project override precedence, administrator ceilings, regular forks, other permission modes, and other providers were not exercised end to end. Focused tests cover scoped resolution and administrator limits; they do not replace those client/provider checks.
