Problem

When a Claude thread stops on a usage limit (5-hour or weekly) that resets more than an hour later, its prompt cache has expired by the time the thread resumes. The continuation then reads the whole conversation uncached and writes it back to the cache. A compaction cannot run once the limit is hit, so it has to run before.

Change

New opt-in setting Compact before usage limits in Settings → Threads → Usage limits (web, desktop, mobile). It is off by default.

When a Claude run completes and the provider instance reports a usage window at 95% or more that resets after the thread's prompt cache expires, IdleCompactionService sends /compact right away, while the cache is still warm, instead of waiting for the cache-expiry window. It reuses the existing idle-compaction eligibility (Claude only, over 200K tokens, no pending requests or background work, one compaction per completed run), never overrides a provider set to Never, and uses the existing beforeCacheExpires marker, so older clients still decode and label the turn.

  • packages/contracts: compactBeforeUsageLimit setting and patch key, default false.
  • apps/server: idleCompactionAction in IdleCompaction.ts decides between compacting, waiting and skipping; IdleCompactionService reads usage windows from the provider instance snapshot, which the run's last usage update reaches before the run completes.
  • Web and mobile settings rows, settings search entry, shared server-setting key.
  • User docs: one paragraph in the Claude usage limits section.

Scope and approval

Related to discussion #24862, which describes the same cost and has no maintainer response yet. That proposal compacts when auto-resume fires, after the reset, so the compaction itself still reads the history uncached. This PR compacts before the limit while the cache is warm. The two are complementary: this one cannot help a run that hits the limit mid-turn.

I am submitting it as focused configuration of an established capability: idle compaction before the prompt cache expires already exists for Claude. The option only changes when that same compaction fires, and the default behavior is unchanged. If maintainers consider it a new feature that needs approval first, I am happy to move the conversation to #24862.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/IdleCompaction.test.ts: the new table covers Never, the setting off, the threshold (94% does not trigger, 95% does), a reset before the cache expires, an unknown reset time, and the last two minutes of the cache window with and without the cache-expiry mode.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (35 packages), tests and react compiler pass.
  • Ran vp run dev and opened Settings → Threads → Usage limits to check the new switch.
  • Not checked: an end-to-end compaction triggered by a real Claude account near its limit.

takeover verification: merged current main while preserving both compaction and thread-exclusion guards. the service now skips history reads below the usage threshold, and service tests exercise the qualifying snapshot and never overrides. blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed, including 35-package typecheck and 80 selected tests. the web switch persists when enabled or disabled across reload. real claude near-limit compaction and native mobile interaction remain unverified.

current-head verification

58bb339435fafc1b0c99b5ef2d9be6cd561f9313 merges main without rebasing, preserves latest-run timer retargeting, supplies the registry dependency in its existing regression test, and respects managed policy on the mobile switch. blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, knip, graphql, 35-package typecheck, 84 tests, and react compiler checks. two independent code reviews found no remaining blockers.

chrome verified the setting persists on and off after reload. real claude near-limit compaction remains unverified because this vm has no authenticated claude account; native mobile managed-policy interaction also remains unverified.

final scope fix at 8c0c257d7b: compact-setting search now offers its owning environment scope when entered from a project. the existing test reproduced the bug before the fix; blacksmith check:changed github/main passes all scoped checks, including 84 tests. chrome exercised project selection, settings search, the owning-scope action, and the enabled switch.

The feature is opt-in and off by default, so the blast radius is small. Searching for the new setting from a project or checkout view lands on a disabled switch instead of pointing to the environment scope. Whether Claude usage events can leave the snapshot stale at the compaction decision is unconfirmed, and automatic compaction with a real Claude account was not exercised. Fix the search scope before or soon after merge.

…usage

Address review: a provider set to Never no longer compacts near a usage
limit, the last two minutes of the cache window no longer compact without
a usage reason, and usage is read from the instance snapshot, which the
run's last update reaches before the run completes.

merged current main without rebasing and kept its latest-run timer retargeting. reproduced the missing-registry failure in the existing retarget regression test, then supplied that dependency. the new mobile switch now respects its managed-policy lock, matching neighboring settings.

blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed: format, lint, knip, graphql, 35-package typecheck, 84 tests, and react compiler checks. two independent code reviews found no remaining blockers on 58bb339435. chrome confirmed the setting persists on and off after reload; current-head images and a recording are in the pr body.

real claude near-limit compaction remains unverified because this vm has no authenticated claude account. native mobile interaction is also unverified.

addressed the new search-scope finding in 8c0c257d7b: searching from a project now offers the owning environment scope. the existing scope test failed before the fix and passes after it; check:changed passes again. chrome verified the owning-scope action reaches the enabled switch.

merged current main again in a2ddc70032 without rebasing, preserving its scoped idle-compaction record reads and this pr's fresh usage checks. remote blacksmith check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, graphql, 36-package typecheck, 84 tests, and react compiler checks. two independent reviews approved this head with no findings. the diff remains 10 files, 216 additions and 16 deletions. no new ui changes; the real claude and native mobile limitations above still apply.

Verified in a real dev environment

tested exact head a3f614fbd58768785e13400fc0c3c83b42456e6b on linux with the real dev server, repo-installed playwright, and /usr/bin/google-chrome. ran vp i on main and the pr. used one dev server at a time and isolated app state.

  • on github/main (ce9e016406), settings → threads has no compact-before-usage-limits control.
  • on the pr, the control defaults off. enabling and disabling it survives browser reload; enabling also survives a server restart. the server's persisted settings contain compactBeforeUsageLimit: true after enabling.
  • resume-after-limits and snooze-until-reset still toggle and persist independently. restored both to off.
  • added a project pointing at the real main git worktree through the app. selected codex gpt-6.1-sol in the composer and completed a real baseline turn on main, then continued that thread through the pr server with the new setting enabled. both replies arrived, and the codex continuation did not generate an automatic /compact turn.

runtime observations:

main codex reply: MAIN_BASELINE_OK
pr codex reply with setting enabled: PR_ENABLED_OK
compact switch after reload: true
compact switch after server restart: true
compact switch after disabling and reload: false
three usage-limit switches after enabling and reload: true, true, true
claude auth status: loggedIn=false, authMethod=none

before, main:

main usage-limit settings

after, pr:

pr usage-limit settings with the new control off

new control toggled on and off in the running app

real codex baseline and continuation through the pr server

Not verified

the central automatic claude compaction is unverified. this vm has no authenticated claude account. the trigger requires a real completed claude session over 200,000 tokens, a warm prompt cache, and a real usage window at 95% or higher whose reset outlasts the cache. codex cannot exercise this claude-only path. no usage snapshots, tokens, or provider events were mocked or injected. this also prevents reproducing the original near-limit behavior on main and checking the never override through real claude execution.

native ios/android, electron, remote/tunnel connections, and actual automatic resume/snooze after a provider limit were not exercised. ci is green on this head, but that does not establish the missing provider proof. no code changes or pushes were made in this verification pass.

End-to-end check with a simulated usage limit

Ran vp run dev at 8e2edb3cfe with a real Claude account (Opus 5.5) and Compact before usage limits turned on. The account was not near a limit, so a temporary local patch, not committed, made IdleCompactionService see a session window at 99% that resets in 5 hours. It also lowered the 200K-token minimum so a smaller thread qualified.

When the Claude turn completed, T3 Code sent /compact at once instead of waiting for the cache-expiry window, while the cache was still warm. Context went from 144K to 13.4K tokens.

Compaction running right after the turn:

Compacting before the cache expires

Compaction finished:

Context automatically compacted before cache expiry, 144K to 13.4K tokens

Still not covered: Claude reporting a real near-limit usage window. The patch replaced that value, so this check exercises the decision and the compaction turn, not the usage reading.

A weekly window can stay near its limit for days, so compacting after every turn meanwhile threw away context the user was still working with.
