When storage cleanup removes a thread's managed worktree, opening its terminal fails with a missing cwd. This restores the checkout before terminal startup and retries cwd validation once. Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24154.

Open, attach, and restart resolve the thread's worktree root before acquiring the terminal manager's existing workspace lease. Recovery and shell startup share that lease, including requests for subdirectory cwd paths. Unrelated missing directories retain their original error. Git recovery stays outside the terminal manager to avoid the setup-script dependency cycle.

The shared helper also preserves main's provider recovery: reuse the retained branch tip, recreate a deleted branch from the project's current branch, reject detached HEAD, preserve interruption, and settle final provider startup failures. Current main was merged with a merge commit. No rebase or force push.

Validation at 144fde01f81504f3cda491a0c8959bce5fc54fbc:

  • All 28 CI checks passed; GitHub reports no conflicts.
  • Blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL, typecheck of three affected packages, and all 96 tests. The six recovery tests failed before updating their existing branch-lookup mock, then passed.
  • Chrome with the real web client exercised open, attach, and restart after deleting the managed checkout. Each restored it; shell output confirmed the expected cwd and feature branch.
  • A real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn restored both a deleted checkout and its deleted branch, then ran pwd and git branch --show-current and returned the expected path and feature.
  • Two independent gpt-6.1-sol source reviewers approved the final head. No unresolved bot findings.

Unverified: native desktop/mobile shells, Windows, remote/tunnel connections, and other provider runtimes.

Terminal attach recreates the checkout, then runs pwd and git branch --show-current (uploaded playback and seeking verified):

terminal attach restores the checkout and runs shell commands

recovered terminal shows the managed cwd and feature branch

Takeover updates by gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code. Original implementation by TonybynMp4.

Opening, attaching, or restarting a terminal whose managed worktree was
removed now puts the worktree back and retries, the same way turn start
already does. The shared restore logic moves out of
ProviderTurnStartService. The retry lives at the RPC layer because the
terminal manager can't depend on git: creating a worktree runs setup
scripts in a terminal.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at bc0df7e

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained server bug fix that restores managed worktrees only after a terminal reports a missing cwd, then retries the affected request once. Existing terminal paths and provider turn-start behavior remain unchanged, and the new restoration/retry logic has focused test coverage.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared recovery for missing managed worktrees. Provider turn startup uses the helper, and terminal open and attach can restore a missing worktree before retrying cwd validation.

Changes: Worktree recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore missing managed worktrees
apps/server/src/workspace/restoreMissingWorktree.ts
Adds helpers to select a branch base, recreate eligible missing managed worktrees, and install terminal cwd recovery for launches within a thread worktree.
Use restoration during provider turn startup
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts
Replaces inline worktree recreation with the shared helper. Startup propagates restoration errors when it will retry; otherwise, it settles startup as failed.
Retry terminal cwd validation
apps/server/src/terminal/Manager.ts, apps/server/src/terminal/Manager.test.ts
Adds a recovery handler for cwd-not-found errors and retries the filesystem check after recovery. Tests cover managed, subdirectory, unmanaged, and no-worktree cases.
Apply recovery to terminal RPCs
apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/ws.test.ts
Wraps terminal open and attach with worktree recovery. RPC tests verify that recovery creates the worktree and the operations succeed.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: terminals recreate a managed worktree that storage cleanup removed. The changeset adds worktree recovery in restoreMissingWorktree.ts, wires it into terminal open/attach through ws.ts, and adds a TerminalCwdRecovery hook in Manager.ts. The title follows the conventional commit format and is concise, specific, and free of noise.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required template: it has a Problem-equivalent opening, a Change explanation, a Scope and approval discussion, and a Verification section with specific checks, results, and unverified areas. Its opening sentences describe the failure and the fix. However, the Scope and approval section does not link a triaged bug issue or a maintainer approval comment. It cites issue 24154 only as a 'Fixes' reference and does not show explicit maintainer approval of direction and scope. The template also asks for the approval comment or an explanation of why the fix qualifies without one. The description also has no problem reproduction steps beyond the opening sentence, and no explicit section headings from the template (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). The author uses a different structure, so the section headings do not match the template.

Resolution

Rewrite the description with the template headings: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. In Scope and approval, link the triaged bug issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval, and include the approval comment. If no prior issue or discussion exists, explain why this small, focused fix of an obvious bug qualifies without one. Keep the existing verification details, and state the unverified areas. Add reproduction steps to the Problem section, including the expected behavior and the environment.

Use Effect.catchTags instead of Effect.catchIf with a schema predicate.

The retry helper catches TerminalCwdNotFoundError with Effect.catchIf(isCwdNotFound, ...). The repository rules require Effect.catchTags({ ... }) for known tags, even for a single tag.

If E is generic and blocks the catchTags typing, constrain E to a tagged type. Do not fall back to catchIf.

After this change, isCwdNotFound (Line 68) is unused. Remove it. Remove the Schema and TerminalCwdNotFoundError imports if nothing else uses them.

thanks @TonybynMp4. sharing provider restoration and keeping git dependencies out of the terminal manager was the right approach. i kept your commit and merged current main, then tightened recovery:

  • open, attach, and restart restore only the missing managed checkout belonging to the thread. unrelated missing directories keep their original error.
  • the thread worktree root is resolved before startup, including subdirectory cwd requests with no client worktreePath. restoration and the one cwd retry now run inside the terminal manager's existing workspace lease. cleanup cannot delete the restored checkout before the shell starts, and the lease is never reacquired.
  • moved coverage into existing terminal tests and added rpc integration coverage. compared the original diff with the final change; the shared provider helper remains, the outer whole-launch retry became a callback inside cwd validation, and the new helper test file was removed.

verification: all 28 ci checks are green at 0439efb and the pr is mergeable. reproduced the missing-cwd failure on main. blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck, and 94 tests. another 161 provider-startup, storage-cleanup, and rollback tests passed. real chrome/web client open, attach, and restart recreated deleted fixture checkouts; pwd and branch returned the expected path and feature. a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn also recreated the checkout and returned PROVIDER_AFTER_CLEANUP_OK with that path and branch. the cleanup interleaving is covered with the real terminal manager and a queued lease acquisition.

unverified: native desktop/mobile shells, windows, remote/tunnel connections, and other provider runtimes. coderabbit's automatic review is rate-limited; its earlier error-handling nit was addressed. both source reviews identified a subdirectory lease gap; the follow-up resolves the thread root before startup and adds three failing-then-passing regressions. the final commit has no independent approval after these fixes; the allowed two review rounds are exhausted, so final concurrency review is left to the maintainer.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified the unchanged head 144fde01f81504f3cda491a0c8959bce5fc54fbc on a disposable linux boat vm using the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome.

  • reproduced on github/main at 2a738273e74e2bc4637bb0977fa7818970760621 in a separate worktree after vp i. created a project through the web app pointing at a real git repository. a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn created a managed worktree and committed a marker. after removing that checkout with git worktree remove while retaining the branch, opening a new terminal displayed Terminal cwd does not exist and did not recreate it.
  • stopped main before starting the exact pr head with vp i and a background vp run dev. reused the same task-owned data directory and thread. opening the web terminal restored the checkout. shell commands confirmed its cwd, original branch, marker, and original commit 06bc7b9f8ea2e024fc703c169fa83df3e109efcd.
  • removed the checkout independently before terminal.attach and terminal.restart requests through the running server's authenticated websocket. both returned running shells and recreated the checkout.
  • neighboring behavior: a terminal in the project's ordinary checkout still opened. a missing child directory returned TerminalCwdNotFoundError. an unrelated missing cwd also retained that error and did not recreate the thread's removed checkout.
  • removed the checkout again and submitted another real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn through the web composer. it restored the checkout, ran the commands, and returned the same cwd, branch, original commit, and marker.
  • blacksmith: vp test run apps/server/src/terminal/Manager.test.ts apps/server/src/ws.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts passed all 96 tests across three files. the head has 30 successful ci checks. no code changes or pushes were needed.

Not verified

native electron and ios/android clients, macos/windows shells, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and providers other than codex were not exercised on this linux vm. checkout removal was performed with git to reproduce cleanup's missing-directory state; the automatic storage-cleanup scheduler was not driven. cleanup/startup interleaving and subdirectory recovery were covered by the existing tests, rather than an induced race in the live app. the deleted-branch and detached-head cases passed existing tests but were not exercised with a real provider here.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Rename the stale Effect.fn span names.

Line 73 still uses "ProviderTurnStartService.recreateMissingWorktree". That name now also appears in traces for terminal open and attach, where ProviderTurnStartService is not involved. Line 137 uses "makeRetryAfterRestoringWorktree", which matches neither the export name makeWithWorktreeRecovery nor the restoreMissingWorktree.* prefix used on lines 48, 111, and 142. Use one prefix so spans group correctly.

♻️ Proposed rename
- const recreateMissingWorktree = Effect.fn("ProviderTurnStartService.recreateMissingWorktree")(
+ const recreateMissingWorktree = Effect.fn("restoreMissingWorktree.recreate")(
-export const makeWithWorktreeRecovery = Effect.fn("makeRetryAfterRestoringWorktree")(function* <
