fix(pi): stop offering extension-only models for text generation - #24110
Pi text generation runs with --no-extensions --no-tools, which also skips provider packages. Discovery loads extensions, so background generation pickers offer extension models that fail at set_model with Model not found. https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19053 has the repro and cause.
Change
Pi discovery also lists models with the launch flags text generation uses (--no-extensions --no-tools), in parallel with the normal discovery. Models missing from that list get supportsTextGeneration: false.
ServerProviderModel gets an optional supportsTextGeneration, like the existing provider-level field. Absent means supported, so other providers and older servers behave as before.
The text generation, source control writer and review guide pickers exclude models marked false after rebuilding custom model entries. A custom display name cannot restore an excluded model. Unknown custom models and the new thread model picker keep working as before.
The extension-free listing has a five-second deadline. If it fails or times out, normal discovery retains its models, commands and authentication, and no model is marked. The rejection message from https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/19070 still explains a failed request.
get_available_models does not identify model origins. Comparing the two launches costs one extra short-lived Pi process per status check. Of the 312 changed lines, 180 are tests; the production change is 132 lines.
cd packages/provider-pi && vp test run src/server/status.test.ts: with main's production code, both new tests fail: demo/demo-model comes back undefined instead of false, and the timeout test hits vitest's 5 s limit because main never starts the extension-free listing. All 8 pass on this branch.
packages/provider-pi suite 126/126 and apps/webmodelSelection.test.ts 29/29 pass. The latter cover exclusion, custom display names, unknown custom models and thread options.
vp fmt --check and vp lint on the changed files pass. tsc --noEmit passes in packages/contracts, packages/provider-pi, apps/web and apps/server.
Real app on Linux: production builds of main and of this branch, run as the web app in Chromium and as the desktop app (Electron with its bundled server). Each run has its own state directory, Pi 1.4.0 on PATH and an isolated Pi config with one models.json provider (local) and one extension provider (demo, the extension from https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19053). Settings rename the extension model to Renamed Extension Model. On main, the text generation, source control writer and review guide pickers all list it, on web and on desktop. On this branch all three leave it out on both, and the new thread model picker still lists it.
With main's production code, both new status tests fail:
On this branch, all 8 status tests pass:
Real Pi 1.4.0, showing the two launches see different models (JSON-RPC responses, summarized):

Not checked:
A full text generation request in the app. The failing set_model step is shown with real Pi above.
A saved text generation, source-control writer or review-guide selection that already points at an extension model. Those pickers now show the resolved fallback model (for example Pi default) while the saved selection stays on the extension model, so those requests keep failing with the https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/19070 message until a new model is picked.
Pi packages listed in settings.jsonpackages (only a local extension file was used), the app on macOS or Windows, packaged desktop installers (the desktop app ran from its production bundle) and mobile. Mobile has none of these pickers.
Prior PRs
https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/19070 by @ScottN-PV, taken over and merged by @juliusmarminge: made the rejected set_model error name the model and explain --no-extensions. This PR leaves that message as the fallback and adds the picker filtering it left as a separate step.

real pi 1.4.0 discovery distinguishes a models.json catalog model from an extension model. system chrome verified the moved text generation picker omits the renamed extension model and retains the catalog and unknown custom models. selecting the catalog model persists through the server and a page reload. the ordinary new-thread model picker still offers the extension model.

Merged github/main with a merge commit and preserved both Pi background discovery and main's active-model credential diagnostics. Fixed one review finding: the shared availability guard now opts into background filtering only for text-generation callers, preserving ordinary thread default and fallback choices. No new test files.

Two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviewers approve this head.
Real Pi 1.4.0 discovery and Chrome web client: the extension model is selectable and saves as both thread default and fallback. The default survives reload. The text-generation picker excludes it and retains the catalog model.
Evidence uses the same isolated Pi configuration and actual proxy model in both captures. The before capture restores the old guard behavior temporarily; source was restored before verification finished.
Before: the thread default incorrectly disables the extension model.
After: the thread default permits it.
Real selection and persisted setting:
Packaged desktop, native mobile, remote/relay connections, and a new model-generated response were not exercised in this pass. The existing provider/client generation evidence above remains from the prior takeover. No merge performed.

final scoped review fix
At 12a5a9e250acafe86118208927aca1c21d31a777, the dedicated writer-model switch also checks scoped availability before saving its initial model. Disabling remains available. The expanded existing browser case fails against the prior handler because it writes an unavailable model, and passes with the guard. It also checks valid enablement.
Blacksmith vp run check:changed passes formatting, lint, knip, 35 affected package typechecks, 57 tests in six files, and compiler checks. Both independent reviewers approve this final head. The real client still enables and disables a supported writer model; the recording above includes that interaction. Actual multi-environment runtime interaction remains unverified, with the rejected path covered by the existing browser test.
Text generation runs Pi with --no-extensions, so models that a Pi
extension or package registers fail at set_model. Discovery now also
lists models with that launch and marks the rest as unusable for text
generation, and the text generation pickers leave them out.

Walkthrough
The change adds text-generation support metadata to provider models. Pi discovery checks model availability without extensions or tools. Model selection and settings filter out models explicitly marked as unsupported. Enabling a separate source-control writer model also checks its availability before saving the setting.

Summary
Discover Pi text-generation models packages/contracts/src/server.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/status.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/status.test.ts
ServerProviderModel gains optional supportsTextGeneration. Pi discovery probes the model inventory without extensions or tools, then marks models absent from that inventory as unsupported. A failed or timed-out probe leaves normal discovery results unchanged.
Filter and resolve model selections apps/web/src/modelSelection.ts, apps/web/src/modelSelection.test.ts
Text-generation options exclude providers and models explicitly marked unsupported. Selection falls back to an available default or model when the selected model is unsupported. Tests cover customized and unknown custom models.
Use filtered options in settings apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SourceControlWritingSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/useScopedModelAvailability.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SourceControlWritingSettings.browser.test.tsx
Text-generation settings, source-control writing, and review-guide pickers use filtered model options. Enabling a separate writer model checks its default selection and does not update settings when that model is unavailable. A browser test checks availability in another environment.

Explanation
The title "fix(pi): stop offering extension-only models for text generation" matches the main change. The PR makes Pi discovery run an extension-free listing, marks models missing from that listing as unsupported for text generation, and filters those models out of the text-generation, source-control writer, and review-guide pickers. The title follows conventional commit form, is one sentence, and names the Pi scope and the user-visible effect.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, all substantively filled. The Problem section explains the cause: Pi text generation runs with --no-extensions --no-tools, so extension models fail at set_model with "Model not found". The Change section lists the discovery probe, the supportsTextGeneration field, the picker filtering, and the timeout fallback. The Scope section links issue #19053, cites the maintainer triage comment, and explains why no new feature is added. The Verification section gives the commands run, the test results before and after the change, and screenshots for the UI change. It also lists what was not checked, which meets the template's requirement to state gaps. The template asks for the model and harness that did the work, and the description names Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, and T3 Code Nightly. The description is long and includes takeover notes, but the core content is complete. The verification section also reports two platforms (Linux and desktop/web), and it names what is untested (macOS, Windows, packaged desktop, mobile).

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a bounded Pi bug fix that identifies extension-only models during discovery and removes them from text-generation pickers without changing thread-model behavior. Reset the shared mock state at the start of the new test.
The new test writes state.styles, state.providerInstances, and state.providers directly. It does not call a reset first. These values stay in the hoisted state after the test ends. A later test that does not call setup() would read this provider data. This can cause order-dependent failures if test order changes.
Extract the reset lines from setup() into a helper that does not render. Call that helper at the top of this test. Then setup() and this test share one reset path.
As per path instructions: "Shared mock state that vi.mock factories read is reset by a setup() call at the top of the test."

reviewed the shared-mock reset nit. the availability test initializes all three state fields it reads: styles, providerInstances, and providers. it never reads or calls updateSettings. the other test calls setup(), which resets those fields and the updateSettings mock. both existing test orders therefore initialize their own inputs. a hypothetical future test omitting setup is outside this fix; leaving this non-blocking refactor out to keep the change scoped.

Check scoped availability before enabling the writer model.
If the representative environment supports its default model but another selected environment requires extensions for it, this switch saves that model to both environments. The picker guard is bypassed, and source-control generation can fail in the other environment. Check writerModelDisabledReason before saving, as the review-guide switch does.
