fix(server): a slow or broken hosting CLI is no longer told to install itself - #23410

ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server discovery bug fix that distinguishes missing CLIs from installed CLIs whose probes time out or fail, with regression tests for each case. Existing successful paths and CLI deadlines remain unchanged, and the Forgejo fallback adjustment is bounded to failed discovery scenarios. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Probe failure diagnostics and validation packages/source-control-core/src/server/discovery.ts, apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlDiscovery.test.ts |
Failed probes now report the version command and server PATH guidance, including timeout duration or exit status when available. Missing executables retain the configured installation hint. Tests cover timeout, nonzero exit, and missing-executable cases. |
Forgejo CLI fallback and validation packages/source-control-forgejo/src/server/ForgejoSourceControlProvider.ts, packages/source-control-forgejo/src/server/ForgejoSourceControlProvider.test.ts |
Forgejo discovery uses tea when it is available or when fj is missing with the discovery install hint. Other fj failures are returned. A test covers an fj timeout. |

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in issue
#10728.probeClikeeps the install hint only for a genuinely missing executable. Timeout, non-zero exit, and other probe failures identify the version command, failure, and PATH-resolved executable. Unavailable CLI authentication details reuse the classified hint. Tests cover timeout, non-zero exit, missing executable, and matching auth detail. Forgejo fallback usesteaonly whenfjis absent.

Explanation
The production changes remain within issue
#10728. They improve diagnostics for the same source-control CLI probe failure and preserve the existing status, timeout, and authentication flow. The Forgejo fallback change and its test support the same failure classification. No unrelated production behavior or file changes are shown.

Addressed both findings in cc07a0dcd5: unknown-auth detail now uses the classified probe hint, and the existing test asserts Azure’s exact exit-status diagnostic. The new auth-detail assertions fail before the fix; all three focused tests pass afterward. Targeted lint and source-control-core typecheck pass. |
… install A hosting CLI whose `--version` probe times out or exits non-zero is reported with its install hint and a "not found on the server PATH" auth detail. These tests reproduce #10728; only executable-not-found should keep install advice. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d to install Settings → Source control advised installing gh, glab or az whenever its `--version` probe failed, even when the CLI was on PATH but timed out or exited non-zero, and the auth detail claimed it was not found on PATH. Keep the install hint only when the executable is missing. Otherwise name the probe command and what happened (timed out after Nms, exited with status N, or failed) and point at the executable the server's PATH resolves. The unavailable item's auth detail reuses that text. Fixes #10728 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Forgejo row fell back to tea whenever the fj probe reported missing, so an fj that timed out with tea absent still told the user to install fj or tea. Fall back to tea only when fj is actually absent. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
An installed hosting CLI whose
--versionprobe fails is reported as missing. Put aghwrapper that sleeps 10 seconds (or exits 1) first on the server's PATH, open Settings → Source control, and choose Rescan server environment. The GitHub row says "Not available on this server: Install the GitHub command-line tool (gh) …", and the item's auth detail says the command was not found on the server PATH. The CLI is installed; only its probe failed. The Forgejo / Gitea row behaves the same way whenfjis slow andteais not installed.Change
probeCli(source-control-core discovery) keeps the CLI's install hint only when the executable is genuinely absent (isMissingExecutable). For any other probe failure, the hint names the probe command and what happened ("timed out after 5000ms", "exited with status 1", or "failed") and points at the executable the server's PATH resolves.teaonly whenfjis actually absent. A slow or brokenfjkeeps its own explanation instead of the shared "installfjortea" hint.Probe deadlines, the
available | missingstatus contract and the auth flow are unchanged. Clients renderinstallHintas text, so web, desktop and mobile pick this up without client changes.Scope and approval
