ci: build the release without the token that signs its attestation - #5
Conversation
Split the release workflow into a build job with read access only and a publish job that installs nothing from the lockfile. Build-time code no longer runs where an OIDC token can be minted, so it cannot attest other blobs as this workflow's output. The publish job holds the downloaded tarball to the sha512 the build packed before it attests and releases it. The release notes now give the verify command the catalog runs, with --signer-workflow, and say the catalog requires the attested commit to be on main. A test holds the workflow to the split.

policy rejects repository execution when an OIDC token is available.
- Line 79: Update the assertion around mintsTokens to verify that
publish.permissions exactly equals { contents: "write", "id-token": "write",
attestations: "write" }, rather than accepting broader permission
configurations.

The current tests cover permissions and job separation, but they do not inspect
publish.steps. A regression could remove the expected artifact download, the single-tarball check, the SHA-512 comparison, or the verified attestation subject without failing the suite.Suggested fix

Summary
pnpm install, typecheckandtestin the same job that heldid-token: write. Code that runs at build time (vite, vitest and their dependencies) could therefore get an OIDC token and attest other blobs as this workflow's output.release.ymlnow has two jobs at the same path, which the catalog pins as the signer:build(contents: read): checks the tag, installs, typechecks, tests, packs, runsscripts/check-package.mjson the tarball, uploads it as an artifact and outputs its file name andsha512.publish(needs: build;contents: write,id-token: write, attestations: write): no checkout, no Node and nothing from the lockfile. It downloads the artifact, checks that it holds only the named tarball and that itssha512matches the build's, then attests it and runsgh release create.--signer-workflow openbrf/example-plugin/.github/workflows/release.yml, and say that the catalog also requires the attested commit to be onmain. The header comment and the README's release section match.Implementation notes
publishtreats the build's outputs as data, because they come from a job that ran the dependencies. They reach the shell throughenv, and the file name must look like a tarball name (no path separators) before it is used.publishtakes the tag fromGITHUB_REF, not from the build. The build has already checked that the tag names the version inpackage.json.actions/setup-nodenow setspackage-manager-cache: falseexplicitly, as the existing "no dependency cache" comment intends (zizmorcache-poisoning).test/release-workflow.test.ts(andyamlas a dev dependency) parses the workflow. It fails if a job that can mint an id-token (its own permissions or the workflow's,write-allincluded) usespnpm/action-setuporactions/setup-node, or runspnpm, npm, npx, yarn, corepackornode. It also checks that the workflow-level permissions are{}, thatbuildis read-only, and thatpublishneedsbuild.upload-artifactv7.0.2,download-artifactv8.0.2).Verification
pnpm typecheck, pnpm test(39 tests) andpnpm check:packagepass.release.ymlfrommain, the new test fails 3 of its 6 cases (read-only build, publish needs build, no dependency in a signing job).actionlintreports nothing;zizmor --offlinereports nothing.npm packoutput. It passes for the right file and refuses a name with../, a wrongsha512and an extra file in the artifact.v0.1.1or later) is the first run of the split workflow.Risk and rollback
