Open source on solid ground.
Basalt is the rock beneath almost everything. It forms the ocean floor, holds up roads and pavements, and when it cools slowly it splits by itself into hexagonal columns: independent pieces that together make solid ground.
That is what we want our software to be:
- Foundation. Infrastructure tools that everything else stands on: directory, DNS, security, the system itself. Things nobody notices while they work.
- Columns. Independent projects, each with its own purpose and release cycle, that fit together.
- Fertile soil. Weathered basalt becomes some of the most fertile soil there is. Open code, exposed to time and people, becomes ground for others to grow.
Open, because everything here is open. Basalt, because it is the base.
Each project lives in its own repository and has its own release cycle. All of them are young: they work in the source today, and none has a stable release yet.
| Project | What |
|---|---|
| Basalt OS | A Linux distribution based on Fedora, built security and AI first. Pre-alpha. Lives in its own organization, basalt-os. |
| samba-conductor | Web administrator and self-service portal for Samba Active Directory, with companion repositories for backups, file servers, identity and Google Workspace sync. Pre-release. |
| obpkg.org | Signed packages: basalt for Basalt OS, basalt-tools for our tools on Fedora-based systems, basalt-testing (opt-in) for packages on their way. |
We build on the work of others: Basalt OS on Fedora, Samba Conductor on Samba, and everything here on years of open source work. We try new ideas in the open and send what belongs upstream back where it came from.
To try Basalt OS and tell us what you think, see basalt-os.org.
