The repository had no production database migration mechanism. Development and tests used Hibernate schema updates, while the production profile did not. Entity changes such as new columns or indexes were not applied reliably to existing production databases.
Scope Implemented
Added Liquibase: Added the spring-boot-starter-liquibase dependency to pom.xml.
Root Changelog: Created db.changelog-master.xml and 001-initial-schema.xml to baseline the current schema.
Search Indexes: Added change sets for idx_posts_text, idx_users_name, and idx_users_bio.
Replaced ddl-auto: Configured spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=validate in application.properties and application-prod.properties so Hibernate validates the migrated schema instead of altering it.
Full Entity Support: Generated the Liquibase XML to match all JPA entities, including users, posts, hashtags, follows, likes, refresh_tokens, and the @ElementCollection tables (posts_images, posts_hashtags, posts_mentions).
Acceptance Criteria Met
A fresh MySQL database can be initialized to the current schema.
The three search indexes exist after migration.
Re-running the application does not reapply completed change sets (Liquibase DATABASECHANGELOG table handles this).
Tests and Docker startup pass with Liquibase enabled (verified locally: 125 tests passed).
Local Development & Migration Commands
(To be added to the README or Wiki as requested in the scope)
To start the DB:docker compose -f docker-compose.dev.yml up -d
To apply migrations manually:mvn liquibase:update
To baseline an existing database (mark all current changesets as applied without executing them): mvn liquibase:changelogSync

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Database setup now creates the tables needed for accounts, posts, images, hashtags, mentions, follows, likes, and refresh tokens.
Database changes are managed through Liquibase, with schema validation enabled.
Configuration
Production database connections now use updated connection settings and DB_USER / DB_PASS credentials.
The change adds Liquibase and an initial database schema changelog. Application configuration enables Liquibase, sets Hibernate schema handling to validation, and updates the production datasource settings.

Summary
Liquibase dependency and schema baseline pom.xml, src/main/resources/db/changelog/*
The project adds the Liquibase starter and a master changelog. The initial changelog defines tables, columns, constraints, foreign keys, defaults, and indexes.
Application and database configuration src/main/resources/application.properties, src/main/resources/application-prod.properties, docker-compose.base.yml
Application properties enable Liquibase and set Hibernate DDL mode to validate. The production profile configures a fixed localhost database URL, updated credential placeholders, and the master changelog. The Compose MySQL service no longer passes the mysql_native_password option.
ohbus/twitter-backend-java#55: It changes date fields to Instant; this changelog defines TIMESTAMP columns for post collection values.

Deploying with the documented Compose setup would leave the app unable to reach or authenticate to its database. Existing databases created by Hibernate auto-update would also fail on first startup with Liquibase unless an undocumented sync step is run first, and that step would skip the new indexes. Fix the production datasource settings and make the baseline safe for existing databases before merging.

Explanation
[#57] The PR adds Liquibase, a root changelog, Hibernate validation, and the three index definitions. The initial changelog unconditionally creates existing tables, so an existing database cannot migrate normally. The described changelogSync workaround also marks the index changes as complete because the indexes share the table creation change sets. It therefore cannot ensure missing indexes are created. The PR does not document production migration commands. The reported test and Docker results do not establish a successful existing-database upgrade.
Resolution
Provide a data-preserving upgrade path that creates missing search indexes on existing databases. Document the production migration commands and verify the upgrade with automated tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#57] The Liquibase dependency, changelogs, and validation settings support schema migration. The production datasource change also replaces the configurable host, port, database, and credential variables with localhost, a fixed database name, and different credential variables. That connection configuration change is not required for Liquibase and changes existing deployment behavior.
Resolution
Restore the existing production datasource configuration, or separate the connection configuration change from this migration PR.

Restore the configurable database address.
In the documented full-stack Compose setup, localhost refers to the application container, not the database container. The application cannot connect to MySQL. The fixed database name also ignores DB_NAME. Restore the host, port, and database placeholders used by docker-compose.yml. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the Compose credential names in sync.
docker-compose.yml passes MYSQL_DB_UNAME and MYSQL_DB_PASSWD to the application, but these properties now require DB_USER and DB_PASS. The documented Compose startup therefore cannot supply the datasource credentials. Restore the previous placeholders or update the Compose environment mapping. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the baseline change sets safe on databases that ddl-auto=update already created.
Each change set runs an unconditional createTable. Existing deployments already have users, posts, and the other tables. On those databases, the first startup with Liquibase fails with "table already exists". The only way around this is a manual changelog-sync run before deploying. Issue #57 requires upgrading an existing database without data loss. The PR does not document this as a required production step.
Several change sets also combine createTable with createIndex or addUniqueConstraint. MySQL DDL commits implicitly. If a later statement fails, the table remains, the change set is not recorded, and every retry fails. Two fixes are needed:
Add a tableExists precondition with onFail="MARK_RAN" to each create-table change set.
Move each index or constraint into its own change set with an indexExists precondition. Then existing databases still get idx_posts_text, idx_users_name, and idx_users_bio if they are missing.

Use DATETIME(6) instead of TIMESTAMP for Instant columns.
On MySQL, Liquibase TIMESTAMP creates a TIMESTAMP column with no fractional seconds. That causes three problems:
Lost precision: MySQL rounds Instant values with milliseconds or microseconds to whole seconds. Keyset ordering on (created_at, id) uses idx_posts_created_at_id and similar indexes. Rounding changes the stored sort keys and makes ties more likely.
2038 limit: MySQL TIMESTAMP cannot store dates after 2038-01-19.
Schema drift: Hibernate 6 generates datetime(6) for Instant on MySQL. Existing databases created by ddl-auto=update have that type, so fresh databases get a different schema. validate accepts both types because the JDBC driver reports both as Types.TIMESTAMP, so validation will not catch the difference.
Replace every TIMESTAMP column in this file with DATETIME(6). That covers created_at, updated_at, expiry_date, and the collection value columns.

Add a primary key on (posts_id, <name>_key) to the map collection tables.
Hibernate maps each @ElementCollection Map to a table with a composite primary key on the owner column and the map key. That key is (posts_id, images_key) for posts_images, and the same pattern applies to hashtags and mentions. These tables have no primary key, and *_key is nullable. As a result, the tables accept duplicate or null map keys. Hibernate cannot load such rows back into a Map correctly. ddl-auto=validate does not check primary keys, so this gap stays silent.
