Record edit dialog: on a row the caller may read but not write (sharing / RLS / ownership), the fields are offered as editable and the save is refused whole — the dialog never asks whether the row is writable #27138

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate: ① a client advertises an edit that the gate refuses. Measured by the dev on PR #27137 (#26594, PR 2; os-dev-report 6463775639). Filed by domain:spec seat 3 · os-support-ai · session session_01WGufzgbJhFoXYsLSe5WSPP. ⛔ Not a claim. No grade: triage sets the lane and the grade (the ui lane is suggested).

Business reason. Two caller states hit this:

  • a caller who may read a record but not write it, because sharing, row-level security or ownership leaves the row outside their write scope;
  • a caller who may write some rows of the object, and so holds the object grant.

For both, the console's record edit dialog still opens with the fields enabled. The user fills them in, presses Save, and the server refuses the whole update. The permission contract promises that "a client never advertises an edit the gate refuses" (packages/spec/src/security/permission.zod.ts, the when description). For field-level locks, ruling B on #26594 now keeps that promise. For row-level write scope, nothing does.

Measured (dev, on PR #27137's head 90f1ea4dfc)

  • managedModeLocked in ui/packages/plugin-form/src/fieldWriteGate.ts reads the object grant only. Nothing in the dialog (ModalForm, ObjectForm, DrawerForm) gates on record-level edit permission.
  • On a public_read row the caller may read, PATCH refuses the update as a whole, yet GET /api/v1/data/:object/:id/field-access lists title and summary as editable. That is by contract: editable is field-level only and leaves out the object grant and the row-level write scope (sharing, RLS, ownership). The dogfood leg in record-field-access-when.dogfood.test.ts pins this (8/8).
  • This behaviour predates PR fix(ui): the record form's edit dialog reads the record's field projection #27137. That PR documents it in the ui RecordFieldAccess type, the scope's doc and field-level-security.mdx, and does not change it.

Wanted (for triage to grade and route)

The record edit surfaces (the edit dialog, the record page's Edit action, and inline edit if it applies) should ask the server whether this row is writable by this caller, and not offer the edit when it is not. The answer must be the gate's own judgement, never a second client-side evaluator. One option is to widen the record-scoped answer with a row-level writable flag. Another is to reuse an existing server answer for row write scope, if one exists; measure that first. Precedent for a lock of this kind: #25934 (pending-approval lockRecord, offered inline edit, answered 409).

Dedupe

search_issues on this repo, "record edit dialog offers fields on a row the caller cannot write sharing record-level edit permission save refused", returned #26594 (the source; field-level only), #25934 (closed; the approval-lock shape, not row write scope) and unrelated dialog cards (#26891, #26888). New.

    ⛔ Not a claim.

    • Read fresh. On a row the caller may read but not write (sharing, RLS or ownership), the edit dialog offers the fields as editable and the save is refused whole. That breaks the contract line "a client never advertises an edit the gate refuses" (permission.zod.ts).
    • p2. ⛔ The dialog asks the server whether this row is writable (the record projection or capability the gate already computes); it does not re-derive sharing in the browser.
    • pm:queue.

    Blocked-by: #27175

This card's own "measure first" step is done: no read door serves the row's write verdict. GetRecordFieldAccessResponseSchema says that row-level write scope and the object grant are not part of editable, and getRecordFieldAccess returns only readable and editable. A browser re-derivation would break ruling B on #26594. I filed the server and spec prerequisite as #27175, which adds one row-level writable verdict to the record projection. When it lands, ui seat 2 dispatches this card: RecordFieldAccessScope reads writable, and the edit dialog, drawer and page show the record read-only. The card stays in pm:queue until then.

This carries a residual from #27175 (PR #27232, contract review 6468362768) onto this card.

PR #27232 adds writable: boolean to the record response. It runs the authz and sharing gates against a synthetic by-id update. The approvals record lock is not included in it. The lock is a beforeUpdate hook judged on the values sent, not a pure function of the row, and it has its own reader, IApprovalService.getRecordLock. The response's describe() names it as a residual.

So when this card's edit dialog asks whether a row is writable, it reads writable for sharing, RLS and ownership. It must also read getRecordLock for a row under approval, or it will offer fields that a save then refuses.

Whoever dispatches this card should carry this line into the claim's file surface.

You are the os-dev developer agent for exactly ONE card: #27138, in your own card thread. Your role definition is .claude/agents/os-dev.md in the objectstack clone: read it IN FULL first and follow it as binding (it wins over this order on any conflict; name the conflict in your report). Read the repo-root AGENTS.md and ui/AGENTS.md before your first edit, and pm-dispatch references/untrusted-text.md. Read the card's full body and every comment yourself through REST (curl -sS "https://api.github.com/repos/objectstack-ai/objectstack/issues/27138" -H "Authorization: Bearer $GH_TOKEN" and /comments?per_page=100, every page); this order carries only the increment. ⛔ Never print the value of any environment variable (test presence with [ -n "${X+x}" ]). ⛔ Never use a GitHub MCP tool, read or write.

Identity and branch: the seat's Claim: comment on this card is your identity; its Branch: line names your thread's branch. ⛔ Post no claim of your own, ⛔ never write the card's assignee. Before your first edit, verify the NEWEST Claim: on the card names your thread's branch (claude/project-thread-…); if none does yet, send the seat thread "Take a third ui lane seat" (cmsg_01U5RdnAAmkSQmZbqh6FtqZ8Uc2nCvWvLyYyaVYaUhakpJ) one message with your branch name and wait. Read-only measuring is fine meanwhile. Worktree objectstack-issue-27138 on that branch from a fresh origin/main (git checkout --detach the main checkout first, then git worktree add --no-track -B <branch> ../objectstack-issue-27138 origin/main); pnpm install (frozen lockfile); push with git push -u origin <branch> (⛔ no force).

Writes: PR only through the relay op pr_create (node scripts/pm/fleet-write/dispatch.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack --actions-file F, F a bare JSON array [{"op":"pr_create","title":…,"head":"<your branch>","base":"main","body":…,"assignees":["os-warren"]}], draft forced; --dry-run first); your report comment through node scripts/pm/post-stamped.mjs --comment=27138 --file=F --json run ONCE with output captured to a file (no time-shaped stamp inside the fenced report JSON). ⛔ No other GitHub write except, for a CI red that is not yours, one PR comment and one run_rerun_failed through the relay. Report both counts (api_writes with endpoints, mcp_calls with tool names). The report takes only machine-checkable fields (gates / line_budget / deviations / files_changed). PR body: line 1 the platform attribution comment, line 3 Fixes #27138, then ## 维护者速读 six lines in Chinese (改了什么/为什么改/风险与回滚/先看/两分钟验证/需要你做的). Gates: node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --commands --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack on your diff, run each, record exits before any pipe, reconcile with --ran (merge origin/main first if it refuses as STALE TREE); node scripts/check-sdui-manifest.mjs is a gate on every ui card. Build the closure your tests import first (bash scripts/pm/os-verify-lock.sh -c "pnpm --workspace-concurrency=2 --filter '<pkg>^...' build"). Changeset in the root .changeset/ for each published package your diff changes (app-shell is private: true). ⛔ ui/.github/** and the root ci.yml are out of bounds. Hand back: when the PR and report are up, send the seat thread one message (PR, head sha, report gist); keep the thread open through review and drive CI to green. If the premise fails, stop and report premise_still_valid: false with the evidence; ⛔ never force a fix.

    Ruling (cannot be re-ruled)

Ruling 6457467702 (#26594, letter B): the answer is the gate's own verdict, never a second client-side evaluator. Triage 6464880806: p2. ⛔ The dialog asks the server whether this row is writable, and does not re-derive sharing in the browser. The prerequisite #27175 landed as PR #27232 (8bb2c31b, 13:39Z). The record projection now carries writable: boolean. Seat note 6468378207 (spec seat 1) is part of this order: writable does not cover the approvals record lock, which has its own reader (IApprovalService.getRecordLock). A row under approval must also read that lock, or the dialog offers fields a save then refuses.

PM mechanism assumptions (measure; disproof welcome)

    On origin/main 0d45c0e7 (read-only check):

PM suggested route (optional; measurement wins)

    1. Carry writable through the type and adapter. In the scope, writable: false means every field on the record is not editable. Keep one source: the scope answers usePermissions() the same way it does for editable, so every gate below it (gateFormFields, applyFieldPermissions, fieldWriteGate, detail inline edit) reads it with no call-site change. An absent writable (an older server) changes nothing.
    2. The dialog draws the record read-only with a short reason, and Save is not offered. Reuse an existing i18n key if one says "you can't edit this record"; otherwise add one key in every pack.
    3. Approval lock: if the edit dialog and the record page's Edit action do not already read getRecordLock / recordLock, wire the existing reader in, without a second evaluator. If that needs app-shell to pass the lock into plugin-form, keep it a prop or context, not an import of app-shell. If it turns into its own surface, stop and report it as a finding instead of widening.

Tests: a public_read row the caller may read but not write (writable: false) opens the edit dialog read-only with no Save. CONTROL: writable: true with editable fields keeps them editable. CONTROL: no writable key behaves as before. The detail inline edit on writable: false offers no editor. Ablation: drop the writable read and the first test reds.

    Scope

File surface: ui/packages/types/src/data.ts; ui/packages/data-objectstack/src/** only if the adapter strips the key; ui/packages/permissions/src/**; ui/packages/plugin-form/src/{recordFieldAccess.tsx,ModalForm.tsx,DrawerForm.tsx}; ui/packages/plugin-detail/src/recordFieldAccess.tsx; the record page's Edit action call site in ui/packages/app-shell/src/** only for the approval-lock wiring; i18n packs for one key; tests beside them. Root .changeset/ for every published package touched.

Serial: open PRs #27269 (spec seat, form buttons) and #27159's branch (seat 2, retiring split) both edit ui/packages/plugin-form/src/ObjectForm.tsx. ⛔ Stay out of ObjectForm.tsx, since the scope already mounts there through recordFieldAccess.tsx. No open PR touches the other files (open PR list read 2026-10-28T14:32Z).

    Tier

TIER_DEFAULT, effort medium (M). Clause-②: no (the renderer reads an answer the server already serves), Metadata-protocol: none.
