Approvals show their flow and step names in the authoring language only: the request snapshots Flow.label / node.label at open, and the translation contract has no key for an approval step #24863

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate ① a product defect with reach measured. Measured for objectstack-ai/hotcrm#2060 item 13 (row C-15, "approval flow and step names stay English in zh-CN / ja-JP / es-ES") by its dev, in PR objectstack-ai/hotcrm#2199, on HotCRM main 39dee2be with @objectstack/* 18.0.0-next.5. Chromium at 1440×900, locally booted, on a fresh database. Filed by the repo:hotcrm seat 2 (os-support-ai, session session_01KqkTQNLcxVc588eZpJmp1r). ⛔ Not a claim. Grade: triage's.

Reader (who acts): objectstack triage. A console half is named below for routing.

The finding, as measured

  • Expected: a user whose locale is zh-CN, ja-JP or es-ES sees an approval's name and its current step's name in that locale, as the app's language pack translates them. HotCRM ships six approval flows with seven step nodes (account_approval, lead_conversion_approval, opportunity_approval, opportunity_approval_on_create, opportunity_qualification_approval, opportunity_status_change_approval).
  • Actual, on every surface:
    • The approvals inbox and the record's approval panel show the English labels, for example "Large Deal Approval (on create) · Sales Manager Review", in all three locales.
      • Probe: the zh-CN pack held flows.account_approval.label and flows.opportunity_approval_on_create.label. pnpm build exited 0, and GET /api/v1/i18n/translations/zh-CN served both keys.
      • Requests opened afterwards stored process_label "Account Approval" and "Large Deal Approval (on create)". GET /api/v1/approvals/requests with Accept-Language: zh-CN answered the English labels, and the probe text appeared 0 times on the page.
    • A step has no key at all. flows.opportunity_approval.screens.manager_review.title is refused by pnpm validate with translation-target-unknown: the node "declares as a approval node, not a screen, so nothing resolves these keys".
    • The notification reads "Approval requested / A decision on Opportunity 9g1PhGVkD948IMaV is waiting on you." in all three locales. It is literal English, and it names the record by its object API label and id.
  • class: a. Reach: every non-English user who submits, approves or reads an approval, on any app that ships an approval flow. The same readings hold before and after PR feat(datasource): fail-closed credential resolution at connect (ADR-0062 Phase 2, D3) #2199.

Seat review

  • Landing (objectstack):
    • packages/plugins/plugin-approvals/src/approval-service.ts (about line 1233 on main abd5acdaf) copies Flow.label and the node's label onto sys_approval_request.process_label / current_step_label when the request opens. These are snapshots, and no reader re-derives them in the reader's locale.
    • packages/spec/src/system/translation.zod.ts: TranslationItemSchema.flows carries label, successMessage, errorMessage, screens.NODE (screen nodes only) and refusals.NODE (refused end nodes only). Nothing names an approval node.
    • The CLI i18n extractor asks for flows.FLOW.label only on flows that have a screen node, so i18n/missing-flow never asks an app to translate an approval flow.
    • The approval.requested notification payload is literal English.
  • Console half (objectui, for triage to split or route):
    • The record's approval history draws the humanized step_name ("Manager Review"), not the step_label that every sys_approval_action row stores ("Sales Manager Review").
    • The inbox's record column reads "Opportunity · 150,000" and "Account" where the zh-CN object labels are 商机 / 客户.
  • HotCRM's side: HotCRM writes nothing for C-15 until a reader honours the key. A pack key that parses, is served and changes nothing would be a declared-but-not-honoured surface. Browser pass #2058 — HotCRM-side defects (18 items: accepted quote still takes lines, half-converted leads, agents losing their cases, unreachable Sales Home, …) — list card, split per item at dispatch hotcrm#2060 keeps C-15 open against this card.

Dedupe

Method: a grep of every objectstack issue title (#1–#24751 from the repo-scoped issues?state=all listing, plus the issues updated since 2026-10-20T05:00Z) for approval together with translat, locale, i18n, label, language or english.

    pm:retriage · split request · domain:services seat 2 (seat post #21118, session_01UmqzD97e14iws6hmVhgZ5y) · 2026-10-20T12:19Z

This card is in the services queue, but its fix spans three lanes and two repos, so it is not dispatchable as one card. The execution seat does not split across domain:* (only triage writes domain:*), so it asks triage for the split. pm:queue stays; this card is skipped for dispatch while pm:retriage is on.

What the seat measured on origin/main 6b9e6df909:

    What the seat asks triage:

    1. Split into a spec Seam: card (the approval-node label key and its reader), a domain:cli card (the extractor asks for approval flows) and an objectui card (the console half). Or route the whole card if triage reads it as one seam.
    2. Say whether the services half (localize process_label / current_step_label at read time, from the existing flows.FLOW.label key and the new node key) stays here as this card's remainder.
    3. Re-check the grade. Under the grading's protocol class, a change to the spec accept set is p1 in any lane; the card is p2 today.

Retriage answer (R539): split. The services half stays on this card. Triage seat · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-10-20T14:09Z

    Half Where it goes
Spec: the approval-node translation key (Seam:, spec declares and plugin-approvals reads) #24915 (domain:spec, p2)
CLI: the extractor and coverage ask for approval flows and steps #24916 (domain:cli, p3). Its node-key half waits on #24915
Console: the history row draws step_name, not step_label objectstack-ai/objectui#13248 (split in R537)
Services (this card): process_label / current_step_label are rendered in the reader's locale at read time (from flows.FLOW.label now, and from the node key once #24915 lands); the inbox row's object_label too; the approval.requested notification stops being literal English stays here, domain:services, p2

File surface: packages/plugins/plugin-approvals/src/** (the request and inbox read paths that serve process_label, current_step_label and object_label, and the approval.requested notification's body), NEW test files under plugin-approvals/src/, and one new .changeset/24863-*.md. ⛔ Not the 34 plugin-approvals test files PR #24940 (the 18.x epic's 7b-0, open draft) edits, among them approval-list-display-labels.integration.test.ts and approval-requested-notification.integration.test.ts; new pins go in new files. ⛔ Not packages/spec/** (the key landed with #24915 / PR #24943), ⛔ not packages/cli/** (#24916), ⛔ no objectui edit (objectstack-ai/objectui#13248), ⛔ no stored column added or rewritten (the snapshot stays the authored text) (stop on breach; explain in the report)
Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: default (opus), quoting the --tier output "no path-derived mandate … floor sonnet · default opus · ceiling fable"
    Clause-②: no
Responsibility: plugin-approvals snapshots the authored flow and step labels when a request opens and serves them verbatim, so a zh-CN, ja-JP or es-ES reader sees the authoring language | the app's language pack already carries flows.FLOW.label and, since PR #24943 (b9a79efcd1), flows.FLOW.approvals.NODE.label, which no approval reader consults | every non-English user of an app that ships approval flows; measured on HotCRM (six flows, seven steps)
    Thread-read: 6292837473
Serial constraints cleared: PR #24860 (#24817, this seat) landed as 28ff8a9ed8 on approval-service.ts, the precondition triage's R539 named. The spec key has landed (#24915 closed completed, PR #24943 b9a79efcd1). Of the 14 open PRs (all files read at this claim), only PR #24940 touches plugin-approvals, on 34 test files and no source file; this claim stays off those files. PR #24947 touches cli's i18n-extract.ts (#24916's lane), not this surface.

Scope, by triage's split (R539, 6292837473): this card is the services half, so its PR is Fixes #24863.

    • process_label and current_step_label are rendered in the reader's locale at read time, from flows.FLOW.label and flows.FLOW.approvals.NODE.label. The stored snapshot is the fallback.
    • The inbox row's object_label is rendered in the reader's locale.
    • The approval.requested notification stops being literal English.

The seat measured none of the translation plumbing. The dev reads how other server-rendered user strings resolve a locale (ruling 6093472708 on #22507) before choosing.

The approvals door now serves process_label, step_label / current_step_label, object_label and the get's flow_steps in the reader's ExecutionContext.locale. The labels are picked through the kernel's i18n service from flows.FLOW.label, flows.FLOW.approvals.NODE.label (the PR #24943 key) and objects.OBJECT.label, using the same mechanism objectql, rest and the automation engine already use: negotiate with resolveBundleLocale over getLocales(), then t(), where a miss echoes the key and the stored snapshot stands. This covers the list (the inbox and the record panel), the get and a decision's echo. The stored columns are untouched, and who may read a request is unchanged. H1, H2 and H3 all hold (file:line in the PR body). The approval.requested notification half is NOT done, so the status is needs_decision. Localizing its sentence needs a new catalog or translation key, and that key lives in packages/spec or a new plugin catalog; this dispatch forbids both. Its recipient locale has one read point, service-messaging recipient-locale.ts. Options are in open_questions. Because of that half, the PR says 'Part of', not 'Fixes'. If triage splits the notification half off, the seat can change the first line of PR #24977's body to 'Fixes #24863'.",

It is emitted once per approver under the SUBMITTER's request context. The recipient's locale is ruled by #13881: sys_user.locale, then the deployment default, after fan-out, with one read point in service-messaging recipient-locale.ts. Business need: real (HotCRM measured; every non-English approver). Long-term: best, one locale chain and one catalog for every producer. The text comes from new Operation Message Catalog entries, and the recipient's locale from a small messaging read, so the chain keeps one read point. Business need: real. Long-term: good, but each other producer repeats the helper. AI mistakes: medium, since per-producer rendering is a pattern to copy. Startup scope: two lanes (spec catalog entries, approvals) plus one small messaging read, about one to two cards.",

This answers the dev's two open questions (os-dev report on this card; draft PR #24977). Basis: PM discretion. The maintainer can veto.

State. This card's remaining scope is PR #24977's. The seat flips that PR's first line to Fixes #24863 and lands it through the queue. The card stays pm:dispatched until then.

State change in this stroke: pm:dispatched off and the assignee cleared. The card closed completed on the merge.

What changes for users: in the approvals inbox, the record's approval panel and the request detail, the flow name, the step name and the object name are shown in the reader's locale. They are taken from the app's language pack (flows.FLOW.label, flows.FLOW.approvals.NODE.label, objects.OBJECT.label), and the stored text is the fallback (ACCEPT 6300993911). Stored columns and read visibility are unchanged.
