Behaviour

The Python extension fails to discover any interpreters (including the local venv) and the "Run Python File" button becomes unresponsive on the second and subsequent launches of VS Code.

Crucially, the extension only works during the very first launch after manually deleting the VS Code cache folders. Once VS Code is closed and reopened for a second time, the "Select Interpreter" command (Ctrl+Shift+P) yields no results, and the extension appears to hang indefinitely during the environment discovery phase.

Temporary Workaround:
Setting "python.experiments.enabled": false and "python.locator": "js" in settings.json resolves the issue, but i dont know why.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. System Setup: Fresh install of Windows 10 Pro 22H2.
  2. Tools: Install Git (in C:\Program Files\Git) and pyenv-win (in C:\Tools\pyenv).
  3. Project Setup: Use pyenv-win to create a virtual environment (venv) with Python 3.11.9 in a project root. Create a test1.py file with print("hello world") at the same level as venv.
  4. VS Code: Install VS Code System x64 (version 1.109.0) with only 4 extensions: Pylance (2025.10.4), Python (2026.0.0), Python Debugger (2025.18.0), and Python Environments (1.16.0).
  5. Initial Failure: Open the project folder. Click "Run Python File" (no response) or attempt to "Select Interpreter" (no results/unresponsive).
  6. Clear Cache: Close VS Code. Go to %AppData%\Code and delete the following five folders: Cache, CachedConfigurations, CachedData, CachedExtensionVSIXs, and CachedProfilesData.
  7. First Launch (Success): Reopen VS Code. The extension now successfully discovers the Python interpreter and the venv.
  8. Second Launch (Persistent Failure): Close and restart VS Code again without clearing the cache. The extension returns to the unresponsive state (no interpreters found, "Run" button fails).

    Hi! Thank you for the comprehensive issue report! What I see is the native Python environment locator (pet.exe) from the Python Environments extension hangs when executing pyenv which python on Windows, seemingly due to cached state.

    Can you try switching to the pre-release of the python environments extension and see if this changes anything (unless you are already on the pre-release)

    Open Extensions view (Ctrl+Shift+X / Cmd+Shift+X)
    Search for "Python Environments" (or ms-python.vscode-python-envs)
    Click on the extension to open its details page
    Click "Switch to Pre-Release Version" button (next to Uninstall)
    Reload VS Code when prompted

    I wasn't able to file it as a bug because I'm on Cursor (so neither of the command palate bug submitters work), but it seems like I'm having a similar issue. I posted on the Q&A forum here. I do not see the "Switch to Pre-Release Version" button, but that's probably because I'm on Cursor not VSCode.

    I have this problem too, it's 100% the Python Environments extension. I just disable it completely and everything goes back to normal. Good riddance.

    Hi! It allows me to click Global now when creating an environment, but fails to fetch any Python version, even though where.exe python and python --version both run successfully. Adding a Python version manually also fails since it says it cannot find that file path.

    I have this problem too, it's 100% the Python Environments extension. I just disable it completely and everything goes back to normal. Good riddance.

    Eleanor Boyd (@eleanorjboyd) Currently, I believe the problem is actually the Cursor Extension Marketplace, which is still showing the most recent version of the extension as 2026.6.1 and the most recent release date as '2025-05-30, 20:33:04'. Is that something you're able to fix on your end, or does that need to be another issue filed with Cursor directly?

    I am also having this issue sometimes when I open Vscode the .venv activation works and sometimes it does not and the environment says its loaded but still reports modules missing and the environment is detected correctly. The problem sometimes goes away if I close and reopen the workspace. The February 2026 update has caused a lot of issues. Hope that the team rolls back to what it was prior to this in Jan 26

    For those still experiencing issues on VS Code for the extension- please include your logs and therefore I can help further! Get to the logs via Output > Python Environments and you can set the log level to trace using the command palette. This will help us narrow down what is happening.

    I have this problem too, it's 100% the Python Environments extension. I just disable it completely and everything goes back to normal. Good riddance.

    I have this problem too, it's 100% the Python Environments extension. I just disable it completely and everything goes back to normal. Good riddance.

    I can confirm, disabling Python Enviroments extension fix the problem
