Summary

Skip now requires Signal K server 2.26.0 or later and drops the code that hedged for older servers. Display units are a core Skip feature, and on older servers values silently rendered as unlabelled SI (m/s, K, rad), which looks like a Skip bug. 2.26.0 is the first release where the server attaches displayUnits to paths outside its default category list (category from the SI unit) and resolves identity conversions such as depth in metres (SignalK/signalk-server PR 2580, commit 0135f608). On 2.23–2.25 a default server sends no displayUnits for depth, power or mass.

Closes #718

What changed

  • Version floor. AppNetworkInitService compares server.version with 2.26.0 right after initializeConnection and before refreshLoginStatus(). Below it, bootstrap stops with a new server-unsupported issue (carrying the reported and required versions) and status degraded: no config load and no login refresh, and the connection state machine stays in initialization mode, so neither the bootstrap nor an HTTP rediscovery opens the WebSocket. A tab resume can still open it behind the notice: checkAndReconnect starts it from HTTPConnected without consulting initialization mode, and gating that in the shared state machine would change socket start timing on every supported server. The check sits there rather than in processEndpointResponse because that method is also the HTTP-retry path, where a throw is classified as a network error. Pre-releases compare as semver, so 2.26.0-beta.2 is blocked and 2.33.0-beta.1 passes. A missing or non-semver version is not handled.
  • Blocking notice. The app component shows a full-screen alertdialog over the shell, with Retry (ReloadService.reload()) as its only control. Focus is trapped and the dashboard hotkeys are inert while it shows. It also appears in embed mode, and collapses to heading plus Retry in tiles smaller than 300×240.
  • Unit preferences. UnitPreferencesService no longer catches load failures or times out; null now only means "not loaded yet". The API is essential on a supported server, so a server with it disabled or proxied away is left to fail.
  • Old-server gates removed. The PUT path filter no longer requires 2.12.0, and the Profiles page no longer requires 1.27.0 (StorageService.isAppDataSupported is gone). The unused SignalKConnectionService.skServerVersion getter is removed. README, CLAUDE.md and the affected docblocks now state the requirement instead of describing degraded behaviour.
  • Perf harness. The mock server reports 2.33.0 and serves a default unit-preferences preset, since Skip no longer tolerates the 404 it served before.
  • Fly-by fix. The existing config-upgrade overlay card used --skip-background, which no theme defines, so in the day theme it rendered black text on a near-black card. The card now uses Material surface tokens, which also fixes that overlay.
  • Version 1.5.4 → 1.6.0: raising the supported-server floor is a minor-level change.

UX

Classification

UI in scope: UX section only — the notice reuses the config-upgrade overlay's layout with new content.

Flows

Open Skip → connect → the server reports a version below 2.26.0 → the notice "Signal K server too old" names the detected version, the 2.26.0 minimum, and says to update the server from the Signal K Admin UI → Retry reloads Skip, which checks the version again.

Screens and states

Unsupported-server notice: populated only (detected version, minimum, update hint). In small embed tiles: heading and Retry.

Layout intent

The overlay's container, dimming and card come from .config-upgrade-overlay, without its spinner, plus a new action row with a primary Retry button.

Design system followed

app.component.html config-upgrade overlay; Material mat-flat-button; Material surface tokens.

Viewports and accessibility

390x844, 1440x900, and a 200x200 embed tile. role="alertdialog", aria-modal, labelled by the heading and described by the body; focus moves to Retry and is trapped with cdkTrapFocus; e, f, n and the arrow keys do nothing while the notice shows.

Testing

npm run ci passes: lint, strict null checks, 206 test files with 3365 tests, and the mcp-schema suite.

  • Bootstrap: 2.26.0, 2.33.0 and 2.33.0-beta.1 boot normally. 2.25.9 and 2.26.0-beta.2 raise server-unsupported and never call config load, the remote-context bootstrap, refreshLoginStatus or the budget reset.
  • Notice: the component tests cover its text and aria labelling, Retry focus and the focus trap, Retry calling reload, the inert hotkeys, and embed rendering.
  • Unit preferences: the failure-behaviour spec is deleted with no replacement. The server-change spec now loads a real second payload, so it checks that the previous server's map never reaches the new server.

I checked the notice by hand on a dev build against a mock server reporting 2.25.0. The screenshots below are from that run. I didn't check night mode, because the hotkey that switches it is blocked behind the notice.

  • When Skip connects to a Signal K server below 2.26.0, it blocks dashboard startup and shows the detected and required versions, instructions to update through the Signal K Admin UI, and a Retry action. The version check runs before login refresh and configuration loading.
  • On supported servers, unit-preference request failures now propagate instead of timing out or being treated as missing preferences. Paths without server-supplied units remain unitless.
  • Removes older-server version gates, documents the 2.26.0 minimum, and updates the performance-harness mock to serve unit preferences from a supported server version.
  • Updates the app version to 1.6.0.

The unit-preferences API is essential on every supported server, so a
failed or slow load is no longer turned into "no preferences". null on
displayUnits$ now means only that the current server's preferences have
not loaded yet.

Code review: require Signal K server 2.26.0

Scope: c9842a3..fbe9abe (26 files). Intent: block Skip on servers below 2.26.0 with a full-screen notice, remove the unit-preferences fallback and the old version gates.

Reviewers: Opus 5.5, inherited from the session, all at once (7d r 2.64).

  • Always on: correctness, testing, maintainability, project-standards.
  • Reliability: the diff removes error handling and a timeout.
  • Adversarial: more than 50 changed non-test lines, plus bootstrap gating.
  • UI: a new blocking notice; it rendered the notice against a mock server.

The maintainer has ruled two things out of scope, and those cases are not counted as findings: failures of the unit-preferences API on a supported server, and servers reporting no version or a non-semver one.

P2 -- Moderate

# File Issue Trigger Reviewer Confidence Route
1 src/app/app.component.ts:342, src/app/core/services/reload.service.ts:78 Retry from embed mode reloads into full Skip. Hash routing removes ?embed=1 from the URL at boot. ReloadService.reloadTarget() builds './' + window.location.search, which is then empty, and also drops the hash. Retry in a Freeboard tile (?embed=1#/widget/<type>) comes back with the toolbar and the page-0 dashboard instead of the tile's widget. A Freeboard-SK widget tile on a server below 2.26.0; the user presses Retry. The UI reviewer traced this in a browser: ?embed=1#/widget/widget-numeric → #/widget/widget-numeric → Retry → #/page/0. adversarial, ui 0.90 gated_auto -> review-fixer
2 src/app/core/services/app-initNetwork.service.ts:331 A tab resume opens the WebSocket behind the notice. On the server-unsupported return, finally still calls connectionStateMachine.enableWebSocketMode() and the state stays HTTPConnected. SignalKDeltaService's visibilitychange handler then calls checkAndReconnect, which starts the socket. Its open handler calls refreshLoginStatus(). The early check was placed to prevent exactly this. A tablet or browser showing the notice whose screen locks and unlocks, or whose tab is switched away and back. correctness, adversarial 0.82 gated_auto -> review-fixer

P3 -- Low

# File Issue Trigger Reviewer Confidence Route
3 src/app/app.component.html:62 During a server restart, Retry gives no visible feedback. Retry's reachability probe fails while the restarted server answers 502. ReloadService's "still unreachable" toast renders under the notice (CDK overlay z-index 1000, notice 2000), and focus is trapped away from it. The user updates the server, as the notice says, and presses Retry before it is back up. adversarial 0.72 manual -> downstream-resolver
4 src/app/app.component.scss Retry has no visible keyboard focus indicator. Focus shows only Material's 12% state layer on the primary button, and outline-style is none. A keyboard user on the notice; focus moves to Retry on open. ui 0.75 gated_auto -> review-fixer
5 src/app/widget-config/path-control-config/path-control-config.component.ts:149 The rewritten PUT filter, !!supportsPut && !isMultiCTRLTypeLight, has no test for the light-type exclusion. Every spec passes an empty multiCTRLArray. Switch-panel widget configs with a type '3' child control. testing 0.75 safe_auto -> review-fixer
6 src/app/app.component.html:45 The new notice reuses the config-upgrade-overlay and config-upgrade-card classes, so edits meant for the config-upgrade overlay also change the server notice. Both overlays in app.component.html share them today. maintainability 0.62 safe_auto -> review-fixer
7 commit 801b6f51 The subject "feat(bootstrap): block the app on old Signal K servers" is 54 characters, over the 50-character limit. It reaches main with the merge commit. project-standards 0.90 gated_auto -> human
8 src/app/core/services/settings.service.ts:23 The notice always renders in the light theme. Bootstrap stops before config loads, so the saved dark or night theme never applies, and the night hotkey is blocked. A user with a dark or night theme on a server below 2.26.0. ui 0.65 manual -> human

Advisory

  • src/app/core/services/unit-preferences.service.ts:64: on a server below 2.23 the unit-preferences 404 now surfaces as an uncaught RxJS error in the console, behind the notice (adversarial, reliability). This falls under the maintainer's ruling.
  • src/app/core/services/app-initNetwork.service.ts:55: serverVersion and requiredVersion are optional on every bootstrap reason; a discriminated union would tie them to server-unsupported. No consumer reads them wrongly today (maintainability).

Pre-existing

  • CLAUDE.md: there is no ## Rendering the UI section. The perf-harness mock hardcodes SERVER_VERSION, so reaching the notice needs a copied or edited mock (ui, P2). Route: file-issue. It concerns how reviewers render Skip, not this change.

Requirements completeness (issue 718)

  • R1 version floor and notice: met. Findings 1 and 2 qualify it on the old-server path.
  • R2 no unit-preferences failure handling: met.
  • R3 no other version branch: met. compare-versions is used only by the floor check, and skServerVersion and isAppDataSupported are gone.
  • R4 genuine unitless cases kept: met.
  • R5 docs: met.

These are at commit fbe9abe, rendered against a perf-harness mock that reports 2.25.0, or 2.26.0 for the supported dashboard. The night-mode and config-upgrade overlay states were forced on a dev build through ng.getComponent.

Coverage

  • Suppressed below 0.60: 0.
  • Demoted to advisory for having no trigger in current use: 1 (the bootstrap-issue union).
  • Testing gaps:
    • No spec runs a visibilitychange after a server-unsupported boot.
    • No spec checks where the Retry reload lands in embed mode.
    • No spec covers Retry while the reachability probe fails.
  • Residual risks:
    • The floor is enforced at boot only, so a server downgraded under a running session is not re-checked.
    • A 2.26.0 pre-release is blocked.
    • package.json declares no server requirement, so an app-store install onto an older server succeeds and then shows the notice.
  • Untracked files in the main checkout were excluded.

Verdict: ready with fixes. Fix order: 2 (one guard in finally), then 1 and 3 together, since both are about where and how Retry reloads. Then 4, 5 and 6, and reword 7. Finding 8 is the maintainer's call.

Fix plan for the review findings

Responding to #720 (comment).

Fixing in this PR

  • Finding 2: on the server-unsupported return, finally no longer calls enableWebSocketMode(), so a tab resume cannot start the socket. A spec dispatches visibilitychange after an unsupported boot and asserts no WebSocket start.
  • Finding 4: a :focus-visible outline on the notice's Retry button.
  • Finding 5: a spec showing that a light-type ('3') child control suppresses PUT-only filtering.
  • Finding 6: the overlay base classes become blocking-overlay / blocking-overlay-card, shared by both overlays, with the per-overlay modifiers kept.
  • Finding 7: reword 801b6f51 to "feat(app): block the app on old Signal K servers".

Filed

Dropped

  • Finding 3, no Retry feedback during a server restart: this only happens on the old-server notice, and pressing Retry again once the server is up works. Inline probe status would add UI state for a transient case.
  • Finding 8, the notice always renders in the light theme: this also only happens on a server below the floor, where the maintainer has ruled out further catering. The notice is shown until the server is updated.
  • Advisory items (the uncaught error on servers below 2.23, the bootstrap-issue union): both have no trigger.

Cost: about 15 changed lines of source, two spec cases and a history reword. No new files.

Skip now requires Signal K server 2.26.0, which supports PUT and
applicationData, so PUT path filtering reads the path's supportsPut
directly and the Profiles page needs only a user session.

README and CLAUDE.md state the requirement and what Skip shows below
it. Docblocks no longer present a missing displayUnits as an old-server
case: it now means a path without units or a unit with no server
category.

Display units depend on server behaviour first released in Signal K
2.26.0. Below it the bootstrap now stops right after discovery with a
server-unsupported issue carrying the reported version, before the
login refresh, so no config loads and no delta stream opens.

A server-unsupported bootstrap issue now shows a full-screen notice
naming the reported version and the 2.26.0 minimum, with one Retry
that reloads through ReloadService. It reuses the upgrade overlay's
card, is a modal alertdialog with focus moved to Retry and trapped,
keeps the shell hotkeys inert, and shows under embed too, collapsing
to heading and Retry in a small widget tile.

The card took its background from --skip-background, which no theme
defines, so it always fell back to near-black while its text followed
the theme's contrast colour: black on black in the day theme. Use the
Material surface, outline and on-surface tokens the rest of the app
uses. This fixes the configuration upgrade overlay as well.

Review fixes pushed (force-push, head af534c7)

The fixes are folded into the commits they revise; the history was rewritten and force-pushed. Plan: #720 (comment)

  • Finding 2, partly fixed. On server-unsupported, finally in app-initNetwork.service.ts leaves the connection state machine in initialization mode, so an HTTP rediscovery no longer starts the WebSocket. A new spec covers this with the real ConnectionStateMachine and SignalKDeltaService. The finding's premise was wrong for a tab resume: ConnectionStateMachine.startWebSocketConnection(), which checkAndReconnect calls, checks only the current state, never initialization mode. Gating it there would also stop the isLoggedIn$-driven early socket start during every bootstrap on supported servers. That is a timing change on the main path to prevent a socket that stays behind the old-server notice until Retry, so I dropped it. The PR description now states this.
  • Finding 4, fixed. A :focus-visible outline on the notice's Retry button (app.component.scss).
  • Finding 5, fixed. A spec in path-control-config.component.spec.ts checks that a light-type ('3') child control turns off PUT-only filtering. It fails when the exclusion is inverted.
  • Finding 6, fixed. Both overlays now use the neutral base classes blocking-overlay, blocking-overlay-card and blocking-overlay-text, keeping their per-overlay modifiers.
  • Finding 7, fixed. The commit is now "feat(app): block the app on old Signal K servers" (48 characters).
  • CodeRabbit night-theme thread: dropped and resolved. Night mode can't be active while the notice shows.

Verification: npm run ci passes (lint, strict null checks, 206 files with 3367 tests, mcp-schema 40/40). The CSS changes were not re-rendered.

Both note, as the completion comment says, that a tab resume can still open the WebSocket behind the notice, and that the overlay class rename was not re-rendered. A grep at af534c7 finds no remaining config-upgrade-overlay, config-upgrade-card or config-upgrade-text in src.
