What

hadron automation list|approval|approve|decline (cli#1071, slice S2 of the automation-adoption plan): an App owner reviews and approves schedules and webhooks by name, with no row id and no hash. Consumes the S1 surface of hadron-server#2441 and the #2434 refusals. All logic stays on the server; the CLI binds the wire names and sends back exactly what it showed.

  • list follows nextCursor, rows are "approved" / "not approved" only (never "up to date"), MANUAL shows the server's omission note. --json {app, rows, omitted}, arrays [] not null.
  • approval <name> [--depth] the plain summary; --depth adds graph and hash.
  • approve <name> fetches ONE projection, shows it on stderr (also under --yes), confirms, sends that hash. AUTOMATION_CHANGED exits 5 and is never retried.
  • decline <name> sends kind and ref only (no hash), never reads the projection; the prompt says an approved automation is switched off (including a newer approval) and an unapproved one only records the decline.
  • Names: schedule/<name>, webhook/<name>, bare when unique; --run <run-id> for a MANUAL origin. Zero match exit 4, several exit 2 listing only the matches. --app on every subcommand via cmdutil.TargetApp (moved out of app member, same rule).
  • No/EOF exits 6 and non-TTY without --yes exits 2, both with zero mutations. Server text is escape-stripped and bounded in text mode.
  • Exit codes: FORBIDDEN 8 (the #2434 read refusals), NOT_FOUND 4, AUTOMATION_CHANGED / AUTOMATION_UNADOPTED 5 (new codeForExtension rows + TestMapError rows), selection 2, cancelled 6, 7 for a malformed projection (null required list, empty hash, unknown state), old-server schema skew (before any prompt) or an unconfirmed write.
  • previewAutomation / reAdoptAutomation stay in unbound-ops.txt (no call site).

Server revision

Schema snapshot refreshed from hadron-server 36d2c9b98 (== origin/main at the time; includes S1 aef8e83b and #2434) via a detached worktree. The unbound-ops diff also lists operations the snapshot was behind on (agentTickerTemplates etc.); none is bound here.

Review notes (deviations, for the seats)

  • The issue says the ambiguity list shows "creation time"; the wire has none, so it shows kind and headline. Two triggers with the same kind and name cannot be told apart by a name; the refusal says to rename one.
  • Zero match exits 4 (not 2): an unlisted name is "not found or not visible".
  • A MANUAL decline has no list row or projection, so it runs one list page first (requireSupport) so an old server is refused before the prompt; only schema skew is acted on.
  • The App-resolution helper the issue asks the owner to confirm is cmdutil.TargetApp.

Verification

Red tests committed first (89bf027, fail on main: the command does not exist). make test, make lint, make generate (no drift), make unbound-ops-check green locally. Nine production mutants killed (hash sent, confirm skipped, no-retry branch, bound, null-rows guard, empty-hash guard, ambiguity guard, display skipped, cursor loop). Review at the final head 6a44c93: BLIND, LOCAL, scoped §10 and QA (compiled binary plus a disposable S1 stack, Cedar) approved, UX carried. Not done here: the release (waits for independently verified deployed-provider evidence). Leaves #1071 open for that receipt. Design-as-built: docs/plans/automation-approval-s2.md.

Follow-ups filed: hadron-cli#1077 (cmdutil.Confirm ignores a failed prompt write), hadron-cli#1078 (wording and pin P3s).

…erations (#1071)

Snapshot read from hadron-server 36d2c9b98 (== origin/main, includes S1
#2441 at aef8e83b and #2434). Binds automationApprovals, automationApproval,
approveAutomation and declineAutomation only; previewAutomation and
reAdoptAutomation stay unbound (no call site).

Fail on main because the command group does not exist; they pin the contract
in the issue: displayed hash, no retry, decline carries no hash, no/EOF/non-TTY
mutate nothing, exit codes, terminal-safe bounded text, malformed projection and
schema skew exit 7, legacy operations stay unbound.

An App owner reviews and approves schedules and webhooks by name, without a row
id or a hash. approve shows one projection on stderr and sends the hash it
showed; AUTOMATION_CHANGED exits 5 and is never retried; decline carries no
hash and never reads the projection; no/EOF/non-TTY mutate nothing. New
codeForExtension rows for AUTOMATION_CHANGED/UNADOPTED, a cmdutil.TargetApp
shared with `app member`, agentic-usage and a design-as-built plan doc.

UX review at 0b732c8: APPROVE, 1 P2 + 5 P3. Built the head and ran the binary against a fake server (list, approval, --depth, ambiguity, zero match, approve/decline y/n under a pty, non-TTY, AUTOMATION_CHANGED). An owner can tell what is approved or revoked without a hash; decline's per-case warning and the exit codes (2, 4, 5, 6) read clearly.

  • P2: empty Reads/Writes/Tools/Limits/Cannot do print "(none)" while approval --help promises "not stated"; in a consent summary "Cannot do: (none)" reads as a claim. Print "not stated" or fix the help.
  • P3: list shows "approved" for a possibly-changed one; approving a CHANGED automation uses the plain prompt; zero match doesn't say "or not visible to you"; redundant Name/App lines; decline prompt for an approved one doesn't say "switches it off".
Limits: fake server only, no real S1 provider, no tests/make run; QA receipt is separate.

CHANGES REQUESTED — BLIND — hadron-cli#1076 at 0b732c8.

  1. P2 — internal/cmd/automation/approval.go:24, :53; mutate.go:94 — Approval can conceal part of the authority being approved. Lists stop after 25 entries and individual facts are truncated, yet approve immediately allows confirmation of the full hash. Under --yes --json, the omitted facts are unavailable in the result JSON too: it contains only status, trigger and hash. Render the complete summary during approval, or refuse approval when the displayed summary is incomplete and provide a way to review it fully. Add tests with more than 25 permissions and long permission descriptions.

  2. P2 — internal/cmd/automation/approval.go:33; mutate.go:94 — Display failures do not prevent approval. writeProjection ignores every write error and returns no error. If stderr fails, the command can send the approval even though the user never received its summary, violating the stated display-before-approval guarantee. Return and propagate rendering errors before confirmation or mutation. Test with a writer that fails partway through the summary.

  3. P2 — internal/cmd/automation/mutate.go:126 — The unapproved decline warning makes an unsafe concurrency assumption. After listing an UNADOPTED trigger, another caller can approve it before this decline executes. Because decline carries no hash or expected state, it can revoke that approval despite telling the user it “changes nothing else.” Warn for unapproved triggers too that a concurrent approval will be revoked. Add a test where adoption changes between listing and mutation.

  4. P2 — internal/cmd/automation/mutate.go:25–30 — Error hints bypass terminal sanitization. approvalHint embeds the original server-provided trigger name directly in an error message. Shell quoting preserves terminal escapes, newlines and control characters; it does not make terminal output safe. A name sanitized in the summary can therefore reach the terminal unsanitized after AUTOMATION_CHANGED or an unconfirmed write. Use a terminal-safe representation for hints, and avoid offering a copy-paste command when sanitizing would change its target. Test malicious names through these error paths.

From this diff alone, I cannot verify that a MANUAL run belongs to the displayed --app: projection and mutation requests send only kind and run reference. I would need the server’s run-resolution contract or implementation to establish whether the prompt can name an unrelated App. I also cannot establish whether the shared HTTP client retries mutations; that implementation is needed to verify the “never retry” guarantee.

QA PASS, hadron-cli#1076 at exact frozen head 0b732c8c88c11790da1f1ed25a18e29d434205b0.

  • Built the real binary: hadron v0.28.0-188-g0b732c8; full make test and 17 automation command fake-server tests passed.
  • Tested against disposable Incus S1 server 36d2c9b98763c92a3cc1dc2976ff75eb37a8c1b2 (S1 base aef8e83b7e3a278f6ec78c86eb6d79ef3a9c7732): list, approval, approve, decline and state transitions passed.
  • JSON stdout discipline and non-TTY refusal passed live; stale hash/no-retry, EOF/no confirmation, decline variants, and old-server skew passed fake-server pins.
  • Evidence: hrn:node:hadronmemory.com:hadron-dev-team-shared:sprints:sprint-2:qa:hadron-cli-1076:cedar-0b732c8c.

Disposition: PASS, no defect, no QA merge hold. Limits: interactive input and stale-hash race were not induced against the live stack; no production/browser/release leg. Stack and checkouts were cleaned up.

LOCAL: CHANGES REQUESTED at exact 0b732c8c88c11790da1f1ed25a18e29d434205b0.

  • P2, mutate.go:93/166: approve and decline ignore failed consent-display writes. Independent compiled fake-server probes with stderr→/dev/full exit0 and send one mutation each despite no deliverable summary/warning. Private failing-writer command probes agree. Propagate output errors and refuse before mutations, including --yes; pin both verbs.
  • P2, mutate.go:25–30 /46–49: recovery hints interpolate the raw server trigger name through shellQuote, bypassing safeText. A captured compiled stale-refusal probe contains literal newline/ANSI ESC bytes in the suggested command even though the summary was sanitized. Make every recovery hint terminal-safe/bounded without changing wire identity; test stale/unconfirmed/partial-error sinks.

Full Go suite, lint, build, generation freshness and operation inventory pass. Red-first89bf027 independently fails on missing command; wrong-hash mutant kills the named hash-forwarding test, equivalent rewrite survives; restored source. Existing ordinary hash/no-retry/decline/refusal paths pass shipped tests.

Saved/read back before peers: LOCAL evidence. Limits: synthetic loopback/failing-output only, no live S1/provider/DB/stack/browser/credentials or real writes. No peer artifact read. Author branch untouched; disposable artifacts cleaned after receipt.

Scoped §10: APPROVE at 0b732c8c88c11790da1f1ed25a18e29d434205b0 (no P1 or P2)

In scope, and holds:

  • Consent: approve shows one projection, confirms, and sends that projection's hash; it never retries on AUTOMATION_CHANGED. A partial or unconfirmed write is outcome-unknown.
  • Resolution: names match exactly. Zero matches refuse with 4 and several with 2. --run is sent verbatim. A blank --app or --run refuses.
  • Error privacy: the CLI only relays the server's refusals.
  • Terminal output: escape sequences and C0/C1 controls are stripped, and output is bounded.
  • Decline: works without reading the projection.

Mutants: 14 of 21 killed. The survivors are listed in the node.

P3s (non-blocking):

  1. safeText/safeBlock keep Unicode format characters (bidi overrides U+202E and U+2066–2069, zero-width U+200B). Graph-authored names and sentences can visually reorder the approval display. Map category Cf to a space.
  2. For a trigger the list showed as not approved, the decline prompt says it "changes nothing else". If someone approves it in between, the decline revokes that approval. Say so.
  3. A MANUAL --run prompt names --app's App, not the run's.
  4. Some sanitization sites are unpinned (mutants G5, G6, G18, G20): the ambiguity-list headline, per-flow tools and writes, and safeBlock stripping and bounding for --depth.

Failed consent display never mutates, an incomplete display refuses approval,
recovery hints are terminal-safe, format/bidi characters are stripped, consent
wording (none listed, concurrent decline, CHANGED, MANUAL prompt), and a lost
write is sent once. The ones that already pass pin previously unpinned sites.

Display errors stop before any mutation; approve refuses an incomplete summary
(approval --json reads all of it); recovery hints are terminal-safe or point at
list; Unicode format/bidi characters are stripped; empty facts print "none
listed"; the unapproved-decline warning names the concurrent approval; CHANGED
and MANUAL prompts say what they are; zero match says "or not visible to you".

APPROVE — BLIND delta — hadron-cli#1076 at d84fae8, from 0b732c8.

All four previous P2 findings are closed in the shown code:

  1. Incomplete summaries now block approval before confirmation or mutation. Tests cover oversized lists and facts.
  2. Rendering errors now stop approval and decline. The test fails on the first write; a partial-write failure remains untested.
  3. The unapproved decline warning explicitly describes revoking a concurrent approval. The wording is tested, though an actual state transition is not.
  4. Recovery hints reject names or App values that sanitization would change. Tests cover malicious names through refusal paths.

One new finding:

  • P3 — internal/cmd/automation/mutate.go:140 — The oversized-summary recovery command omits --app. When approval used an explicit App different from the default, copying the suggested approval … --json command can fail or display a same-named automation in another App. Include the original App when safe, using the same safeguards as approvalHint.

The MANUAL wording addresses the earlier misleading App attribution. The dropped-connection test adds evidence for sending mutations once in that scenario; the shared client's broader retry behavior remains unverifiable from this diff alone.

APPROVE (no P1 or P2)

UX delta at d84fae8: APPROVE. My P2 is closed ("none listed" in every empty list, with help saying it is what the server listed, not a guarantee), and the three P3s taken are closed: the CHANGED approve prompt, zero-match "or it is not visible to you", and decline "This switches it off." Approve refusing when the summary was cut (exit 7, nothing sent, says what to run) is the right call for a consent action. Three new wording-only P3s: the MANUAL "found by run id only..." clause sits mid-sentence in the prompt (put it on its own line), the not-approved decline warning says "decline carries no hash" (jargon), and --app is silently ignored with --run. Limits: static read of the production delta; I did not rebuild or re-run the binary, and did not read tests or agentic-usage. QA is Cedar's.

§10 (security, scoped) delta: APPROVE at d84fae8 (delta from 0b732c8).

  • My four P3s are fixed: Cf/bidi/zero-width/U+2028-9 are stripped (hidden()); the decline wording names the concurrent-approval revoke; MANUAL says "found by run id only" and names no App; the four sanitizer sites are pinned.
  • The new refusal paths mutate nothing. A failed display write (approve and decline) and an incomplete consent projection both return before Confirm and before the mutation, --yes included.
  • Mutants, one per new guard: 8/9 killed. M9 survived (P3 N1, non-blocking): the !terminalSafe(raw) → <name> guard in approvalTarget() is correct but unpinned. Without it, an evil trigger name reaches the terminal raw in the incomplete-refusal error. Suggest a test that combines an evil name with an oversized summary.
  • N2 (informational, product): an automation whose summary goes past the consent bounds cannot be approved from the CLI at all. This fails closed.

CHANGES REQUESTED — LOCAL delta at d84fae8, compared independently with 0b732c8. Jane (Codex/OpenAI), author Jack (Claude). Checked out exact head in detached disposable worktree.

P2-1 PARTLY CLOSED, residual prompt failure: automation/mutate.go now propagates projection and warning failures before mutation, including --yes. Independent compiled /dev/full probes: approve and decline each exit 1, ZERO mutation calls. However internal/cmdutil/confirm.go:57 ignores fmt.Fprintf's error. The new approve/decline callers still use this helper. Independent temporary command-level TTY probe accepted summary/warning writes, failed only the write containing (y/N), supplied y\n: BOTH commands returned nil and sent one mutation. Thus the confirmation question can fail to display while the command acts. Fix the automation confirmation path to propagate prompt write errors before consuming confirmation/mutating; pin prompt-only failure for both verbs, with successful-display controls. No author branch edits made.

P2-2 CLOSED: approvalHint now checks original identity survives sanitation unchanged and otherwise points to automation list. Independent compiled stale-name probe with newline plus benign ANSI color: exit 5, no ESC bytes in captured stderr, generic list hint; original wire identity not rewritten. Source covers unknown/unconfirmed paths and manual run IDs too.

Other delta read: all seven changed files, consent truncation refusal, format-character sanitation, MANUAL app disclaimer, concurrent-decline warning, empty-list/CHANGED copy, tests and docs. No other new finding. Approval does not carry while prompt-failure residual remains.

Executed: make build PASS; go test ./... PASS; make lint PASS (0 issues); git diff --check PASS; compiled synthetic loopback /dev/full approve/decline and stale-name probes; independent prompt-only failing-writer probe FAILS both verbs as above. Temporary test removed. Baseline full-suite/codegen/red-first/hash-mutant evidence remains in prior node; not rerun red-first or mutants on this delta. No live provider, disposable server stack, real automation writes, release/install or security/QA-seat claim. Synthetic fixtures only. No generated/API change in delta.

Disclosure: saw author chat #36201 summarizing BLIND/LOCAL/UX/security fixes and routing before review. Did not open peer verdict artifacts or PR comment lists before saving this verdict. Prior own LOCAL findings were independently saved at baseline. Evidence logs: /tmp/jane1076-delta-full.txt, /tmp/jane1076-delta-lint.txt, /tmp/jane1076-delta-build.txt, /tmp/jane1076-delta-prompt-probe.txt (durable conclusions here).

…n the recovery command (#1071)

cmdutil.Confirm ignores a failed prompt write, so a "y" given to an unseen
question sent the mutation (LOCAL delta P2). A local confirm wrapper refuses
instead, leaving the shared helper untouched. The oversized-summary recovery
command now carries --app (BLIND delta P3); its unsafe-name placeholder is pinned
(§10 delta P3).

§10 (security, scoped) delta2: APPROVE at 6a44c93 (delta from d84fae8).

  • A failed write of the '(y/N)' prompt now refuses before Approve/DeclineAutomation (local confirm() with a sticky writer). --yes, 'n' and EOF behave as before; ErrOut is restored.
  • The oversize recovery command carries --app only when the App ref is terminal-safe. It is a read hint, with no consent impact.
  • My N1 is closed: the <name> guard is pinned.
  • Mutants: 6/7 killed. D6 survived (P3 N3, non-blocking): the !terminalSafe(app) guard in approvalAppFlag() is unpinned. The App ref is user-supplied, so exposure is low.
  • Note for Ada: ruling (1) asked for every caller of the shared helper to be checked. cmdutil.Confirm is unchanged, and 37 non-test callers outside automation still accept 'y' after a failed prompt write. Scope is Ada's call. The automation consent path is closed.

APPROVE — LOCAL delta at 6a44c93, compared independently with d84fae8. Jane, Codex/OpenAI; author Jack, Claude. Exact head checked out in a disposable detached worktree.

Residual P2 CLOSED. Automation's local confirm wrapper records stderr write errors and checks them before the mutation call. Both approve and decline call it; the original stream is restored by defer. Independent TTY probes fail only the write containing (y/N), with y on stdin: both now refuse and send ZERO mutations. Matched successful-display controls return success and send exactly ONE mutation each. Independently disabling the sw.err check makes both author prompt-failure pins FAIL (nil error, successful mutation); restored production and reran all TestAutomation tests successfully. Shared cmdutil.Confirm remains unchanged: Ada explicitly accepted the local wrapper in #36225 and requested a separate P3 caller-class follow-up, which this receipt does not claim delivered.

Prior findings remain closed: rebuilt compiled CLI /dev/full approve/decline probes each exit 1 with ZERO mutations; captured stale-name recovery hint exits 5 with no escape bytes. Oversize recovery now includes terminal-safe --app, otherwise omits unsafe App; unsafe target placeholder retained. Read all three actual delta files: mutate.go, command tests, agentic usage. No additional finding. LOCAL approval applies to this exact head; baseline and d84 evidence carry only as qualified here.

Validation: independent prompt-failure and success controls 4/4 PASS; go test ./... PASS; make build PASS; make lint PASS, 0 issues; restored-tree go test ./internal/cmd -run '^TestAutomation' -count=1 PASS; git diff --check PASS; no tracked changes remain. Wrong-check mutant killed for both verbs and restored. No API/generated changes in delta, no regeneration needed. Did not rerun baseline red-first history, live provider, stack, migration, browser, production writes, release or install. This is LOCAL engineering evidence, not QA or security-seat substitution. Temporary independent test removed; disposable checkout cleaned up after receipt.

Disclosure: before saving saw author #36223 fix summary including summaries of other findings, and coordinator #36220/#36225 stating peer seat statuses/carry rulings. No peer verdict artifacts or PR comment lists opened. Own prior residual was saved independently. APPROVE — BLIND delta — hadron-cli#1076 at 6a44c93, from d84fae8.

The previous P3 at internal/cmd/automation/mutate.go:140 is closed: the oversized-summary recovery command now includes --app when the App value passes terminalSafe, with regression coverage.

The four previously closed P2 findings remain closed in this delta. The new confirm wrapper also blocks mutation when writing the confirmation prompt fails; tests cover both approve and decline with "y" supplied on stdin.

No new P1, P2, or P3 findings in the supplied delta. Partial-write failure remains untested, though stickyWriter records any returned write error.

QA PASS DELTA — hadron-cli#1076 at 6a44c936ecdda5af10aebb358757c9b85c7e2481 (live OPEN, non-draft, MERGEABLE; CI 4/4 green). Built hadron v0.28.0-192-g6a44c93 with Go 1.26.10 on linux/amd64.
31 compiled-binary harness checks passed: failing stderr, oversized summaries plus full JSON recovery, terminal-safe hints, MANUAL prompts, and CHANGED approve prompts. The TTY prompt-write-failure test passed for approve and decline with only (y/N) failing, y supplied, and zero mutations.
Limits: no full Go suite, real server or production access; prompt-write failure used the command-level TTY writer seam. No QA merge hold. Peer exposure before saving: Ada coordinator summaries #36220 and #36225; details recorded in the evidence node.

UX carry: APPROVE carries from d84fae8 to 6a44c93 (Ada's ruling, #36225). Verified from the diff: the one production file, internal/cmd/automation/mutate.go, adds a prompt-write-failure refusal (a new error line only on that failure path, "could not show the confirmation prompt (...); nothing was sent") and --app on the oversized-summary recovery command. No prompt, summary, warning or help wording changes on the normal paths. My three wording P3s (MANUAL clause placement, "carries no hash", --app with --run) stay open as the agreed follow-up. Limits: static read of the delta only.
