gooddata-eval can require a document item to ask before it drafts, and can script the simulated user's answer. Opt-in per item; existing items score as before.

PR 2 of 2 for LX-3243. The gen-ai side, where the copilot asks before drafting a page with no data, is gooddata/gdc-nas#29711.

What this implements

{
  "question": "Create a report on revenue and customers for the first half of 2030.",
  "expected_output": {
    "expects_clarification": true,
    "asked_first_required": true,
    "clarification_reply": "Use the first half of 2026 instead. Please create the document now.",
    "period": {"start": "2026-01-01", "end": "2026-06-30"}
  }
}

Decisions

  1. asked_first_required makes document_asked_first a strict check.
    It needs expects_clarification: true. The diagnostic copy is then not published, so the score is not reported twice.

  2. clarification_reply replaces the reply built from the charts and period.
    The built reply always says "create the document now", which does not answer a question about something else, such as an empty page.

  3. A refused draft_document call is not a draft.
    The extractor already skips non-success results, so a copilot that asks after the tool refuses still counts as asking first.

Test plan

  • New tests: gate fails a run that drafts straight away, passes one that asks then drafts, custom reply is sent, malformed keys are rejected before any request
  • packages/gooddata-eval tests: 2548 passed; ruff, ruff format, ty and gitlint clean
  • CodeRabbit CLI: no findings

Risk

low — opt-in fixture keys; no change for items without them.

risk: low

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Evaluation scenarios can provide a simulated clarification reply and require the agent to ask a question before drafting.
    • Results show whether the agent asked first and fail the check if it drafts without asking. When asking first is not required, this observation remains diagnostic-only.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Questions that offer choices are now distinguished from confirmation requests more accurately.

Walkthrough

Document evaluation now supports configured clarification replies and an option to require a question before drafting. Reply classification also recognizes choices in confirmation prompts.

Changes: Document clarification evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Clarification fixture expectations
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/agentic/document_skill.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_agentic_document_skill.py
Fixture validation accepts asked_first_required and clarification_reply with defined constraints. The simulator uses the configured reply after a question. Tests cover invalid fixture values and reply behavior.
First-turn question evaluation
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/agentic/document_skill.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_agentic_document_skill.py
The evaluator records whether the first response was a question. When asking first is required, it applies a strict check and fails runs that draft immediately. Tests cover passing and failing runs.
Confirmation choice classification
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata-eval/core/agentic/_conversation_context.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_agentic_conversation.py
Reply classification detects alternatives in confirmation prompts. Tests distinguish create-or-change questions from confirmation requests.

Explanation

The title "feat(gooddata-eval): gate a document item on asking before it drafts" names the main change. The PR adds an asked_first_required expectation key that makes the copilot's clarification question a strict check, and it fails a run that drafts without asking first. The title is specific, uses a conventional prefix, and matches the changeset and the PR objectives. It does not cover the clarification_reply key or the choice-detection fix, which is expected for a short title.

Send the custom reply only when the copilot asks a question.

The run loop sends the simulated reply after every turn that does not produce a draft. This includes non-question turns, such as a status message like "Working on it". With clarification_reply set, the configured text replaces the generated reply on those turns too. The PR states that the reply answers the copilot's question. On a non-question turn, the copilot instead receives content it did not request. That content also replaces the generated "Please create the document now." prompt, which can leave the copilot without a drafting prompt until max_iterations is reached.

Gate the custom reply on the classification that the loop already computes for the first turn. Use the same classification on every turn:

Count choice questions as questions.

classify_reply classifies “Should I create the document for Q1 or Q2?” as a confirmation, not a question. A run that asks this question and then drafts therefore fails the new strict check. Handle choice questions before applying the confirmation classification. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

`document_asked_first` was recorded but never scored, and the simulated user always answered with the expected charts and period. An item could not require the copilot to ask, and a question about something else got an answer that did not fit.

Two optional expectation keys close that:

- `asked_first_required`: true makes `document_asked_first` a strict check, failing a run whose first turn did not ask. It needs `expects_clarification: true`. The diagnostic copy is then not published, so the score is not reported twice.
- `clarification_reply`: the text the simulated user sends when the copilot asks, in place of the reply built from the charts and period.

A malformed value is rejected before the first request. Without either key, nothing changes for existing items. A refused `draft_document` call is not a draft, so a copilot that asks after the tool refuses an empty page counts as asking first.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Use the configured reply only once.

If the copilot asks a second question, the run sends clarification_reply again. For example, after answering a period question, it repeats that period answer when asked which charts to use. The run can exhaust its turns without drafting. Use the configured reply for the first question, then use the generated reply for later questions.

Distinguish internal disjunctions from user choices.

Should I create a metric for customers with active or pending subscriptions? requests confirmation for one metric. The broadened _CHOICE_RE treats the internal or as a user choice, so classify_reply returns question. The conversation path then invokes the clarification judge and may consume a simulated answer instead of sending CONFIRMATION_REPLY. In the document skill, the same result can consume clarification_reply.

Use a choice classifier that recognizes alternatives requiring user selection or a separate follow-up action, while ignoring disjunctions inside the requested object. Preserve cases such as Should I create the document for Q1 or Q2? and Should I create it? Or change the period first?. Add a regression case for the internal-disjunction example.
