libva < 2.22 (vaMapBuffer2) compatibility: Export dynamic symbols from openscreen-pipewire-helper and provide a dlsym bridge in ffmpeg_accessors.c (supporting both x86_64GLIBC_2.2.5 and aarch64GLIBC_2.17) that forwards vaMapBuffer2 to vaMapBuffer when vaMapBuffer2 is absent (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with libva 2.20). This allows h264_vaapi hardware encoding to initialize instead of falling through to the failing h264_vulkan path.
Multi-GPU DRM render-node probing: Honor OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE and probe /dev/dri/renderD128..renderD135 across the full VA-API device, frame pool, VPP graph, and codec setup in dmabuf_import.rs, encoder.rs, and pipeline_linux.rs.
Linux preview readback cap: Proportionally scale Linux preview rectangles down to OPENSCREEN_LINUX_PREVIEW_MAX_DIM (default 854, rounded down to even dimensions) in compositorViewService.ts to reduce CPU readback and IPC overhead during editing.
Linux X11 dynamic HUD sizing: Reserve compact tooltip height (86px stack reserve) when no popover is open on Linux so the non-click-through HUD window does not block desktop clicks, and toggle setResizable(true/false) around setBounds on Linux so X11 window managers (Mutter) honor dynamic resize when popovers open or close.
N/A — verified on Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS (GNOME 46, X11 session): collapsed HUD stays compact (440x190), expands to 640x730 when opening Settings/Language popovers, and returns to 440x190 on close.
Linux VA-API initialization now tries multiple render nodes and supports a vaMapBuffer2 compatibility shim. Linux preview rectangles are scaled to a configurable maximum. Linux HUD allocation and bounds handling use Linux-specific sizing behavior.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
VA-API symbol compatibility electron/native/pipewire-capture/csrc/ffmpeg_accessors.c, electron/native/pipewire-capture/build.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/encoder.rs
The capture build exports dynamic symbols. The compatibility code provides vaMapBuffer2 through vaMapBuffer when needed, and the safety probe accepts either symbol.
VA-API initialization tries configured or available render nodes. Each path continues to another candidate after specified setup or initialization failures.
Linux preview rectangles that exceed the configured maximum dimension are proportionally scaled. The scaled rectangle is used for view creation and updates.
Linux HUD sizing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
HUD allocation and bounds src/components/launch/LaunchWindow.tsx, electron/windows.ts
Linux allocation dimensions respond to popover state. Linux bounds updates temporarily enable resizing, and the initial Linux HUD size is reduced.
The Linux compatibility and probing fixes address the previous concerns. Collapsed vertical HUDs can now clip longer tooltips; preserving their horizontal clearance is a localized fix. Remaining merge risk is bounded to this UI regression.

The title names several changes: X11 HUD sizing, a libva vaMapBuffer2 shim, and multi-GPU VA-API probing. The changeset covers all three, and the Linux-only fix scope is clear. The title is long (96 characters, 14 words) and lists three topics, so it is somewhat overloaded, but it matches the main change and is not vague or off-topic.

Limit render-node probing to VA-API.
The Vulkan attempt also runs the DRM render-node loop, and FFmpeg rejects every render-node path by name. Each path after a failed default Vulkan attempt creates and tears down a Vulkan instance. Gate the candidate list on device_type == ff::AV_HWDEVICE_TYPE_VAAPI, so Vulkan keeps its single default attempt.

Try the next render node when H.264 setup fails after VA-API derivation.
The loop stops at the first node that derives VA-API. Failures in frame-context setup, VPP setup, or avcodec_open2 return None without trying later nodes. On hybrid GPU hosts, export then falls back to software encoding. Retry the full open sequence per node, with cleanup between attempts.

Compact the Linux allocation for collapsed vertical trays.
On Linux, a collapsed vertical tray still reserves the full popover and modal height above the bar. The HUD never sends ignore=true on Linux, so that empty area receives clicks meant for the desktop. Extend the compact collapsed allocation to vertical trays after checking the space that vertical tooltips and notices need.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
attach_hardware stops probing once device creation succeeds, before frame-pool initialization or avcodec_open2. A first GPU that can create a VA-API device but cannot encode the requested video prevents trying a later usable render node.
Recording falls through the backend ladder to Vulkan or software rather than using available VA-API encoding.
This can occur when: The default or first candidate creates a VA-API device but fails later encoder setup, while /dev/dri/renderD129 can complete setup.

The dlsym interposer can return NULL for every lookup on aarch64 glibc.
On aarch64, the base dlsym symbol version is GLIBC_2.17, not GLIBC_2.2.5. resolve_real_dlsym() only tries GLIBC_2.2.5. If both dlvsym calls fail, real_dlsym_fn stays NULL. The exported dlsym then returns NULL for every name, including vaMapBuffer2 and vaMapBuffer. vaapi_is_safe_to_probe() then returns false, so VA-API is skipped on a device that may be usable.
Resolve the delegate with the architecture's base version, or fall back to an unversioned lookup. Keep the GLIBC_2.2.5 path for x86_64.

Retry the next render node when avcodec_open2 fails.
attach_hardware moves to the next render node only when device or frame-pool setup fails. avcodec_open2 runs after attach_hardware returns. If it fails on the selected node, open moves to the next LADDER backend, so a later VA-API node that can encode H.264 is never tried. Run the open attempt per node, or treat an avcodec_open2 failure as a reason to try the next node.

Fall back to the scanned render nodes when the override fails.
When OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE is set, the importer's candidate list holds only that node. If that node is missing or fails DRM/VAAPI setup, DmabufImporter::new returns an error, and dmabuf capture does not start, even when /dev/dri/renderD128 works. The encoder and compositor paths try the override first and then scan the other nodes. Apply the same order here.

Collapsed vertical Linux trays drop the width that right-side tooltips need.
With the popover closed, a vertical tray on Linux gets required.width (408 px for a bar up to 360 px wide). The popover-open branch and the previous collapsed branch both granted 240 px more. Vertical tooltips open to the right of a centred bar, and the tooltip can be up to 260 px wide. With the narrower window, tooltip text wider than the space beside the bar extends past the BrowserWindow edge and is clipped.
