#74 touches 🤖 Posted autonomously by Claude on behalf of pasta. |
The reference implementation reads the version as a signed 32-bit integer, so a version with the top bit set is below every minimum.
Callers can tell a short read from trailing bytes. Messages decode through `BaseCodec`, whose errors carry that detail.
The reference implementation refuses a larger message before it reads its command. `PayloadTooLarge` now carries the `CommandString`.
The reference implementation bounds the type and payload together by 1 + 12 + 3 MiB, then refuses a long-form type outside 0x20 to 0x7f.
Contents that end before the type give `MissingCommand`. An unassigned short ID within the reference implementation's tables decodes as an empty command, which is ignored rather than rejected.
`P2pMsg::decode_payload` gives `InvalidCommand` when a command fails `CommandString::is_valid_v1`: printable bytes up to the first NUL, then only NULs.
`InvType` names each type the reference implementation defines. Its `command` gives the message that carries the object, a `tx` for an asset unlock, and `is_tx` and `is_block` group the types.
A `headers2` reply carries up to 8000 headers. `Headers::MAX_COUNT` and `Headers2::MAX_COUNT` export the most each message carries.
A count the input cannot hold at the smallest entry size is reported as `Eof` before anything is allocated for it.
`headers2` carries up to 8000 headers only from protocol version 70235, `ProtocolVersion::INCREASE_MAX_HEADERS2`; below it, 2000.
`decode_v2` reads the short ID as a `u8` and the long-form type as a `CommandString` instead of calling `codec::take`.
`p2p_core` only speaks V2, so `CommandString::is_valid_v1` and the V1 vectors go. `P2pMsg::decode_payload` refuses what `is_valid_v2` refuses.
The reference transport vectors run against the public `decode_v2` as a standalone test, so they no longer need the `serde` feature.
Comments and tests name the limit constants instead of their values, so they cannot go stale. Public docs link the newly exported constant.
`MIN_HEADERS_SIZE`, `MIN_HEADERS2_SIZE` and `MAX_V2_CONTENTS_SIZE` are sizes in bytes, while `MAX_COUNT` and `max_count` stay counts.
`define_p2p` lists the short IDs the tables hold without a message, so `LOW_TABLE_COUNT` and `HIGH_TABLE_COUNT` follow each new assignment.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied findings against head 8b43b25 and the pinned Dash Core implementation; no blocking defects were confirmed, and one targeted test-coverage suggestion remains. This was a static review with no local builds or tests. Current CI reports successful build, test, lint, documentation and cross-platform checks; the non-successful PR-commenting and tagging jobs are workflow automation, not code checks.

In `pkgs/p2p_core/src/msg/headers2.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/p2p_core/src/msg/headers2.rs:319-327: Pin the 39-byte compressed-header floor with a valid batch
The generated headers all have a zero `prev_hash`, rather than the preceding header's hash. Consequently, entries after the first retain the 32-byte previous-hash field and occupy 71 bytes instead of the 39-byte compressed minimum. The existing corpus contains only single-header messages, and the EOF test derives both its input size and expected error from `MIN_HEADERS2_SIZE`. An incorrect increase of that constant from 39 to 40 would therefore pass these tests while rejecting sufficiently long valid batches of maximally compressed headers. Add a successful decode case with independently specified wire bytes containing an initial full header followed by 39-byte entries, ideally reaching the 8000-header boundary. This directly protects the new pre-allocation guard against rejecting valid input.
Pin the 39-byte compressed header floor: a maximal batch of entries that all drop the previous hash, nbits and version must decode in full.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete diff at ab11ad1 against the surrounding codecs and pinned Dash Core rules; no blocking defect was confirmed, but two nonblocking diagnostic-safety and regression-coverage issues remain. The new linked 8,000-header test fixes the prior compressed-header-floor finding. Validation was static-only; the exact-head CI snapshot and current PR checks show build, test, lint, and cross-platform checks passing.

- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/p2p_core/src/error.rs:33-35: Escape peer-controlled commands in Debug-formatted errors
The new command-bearing errors escape Display output, but their derived Debug delegates to CommandString::Debug, which interpolates as_str() with `{}` in command.rs:85. A rejected long-form command containing `pi\nng` therefore produces an error whose Debug output contains a literal newline; ASCII terminal escape sequences survive as well. Previously, this input returned UnknownCommand, whose derived Debug printed a numeric byte array. PayloadTooLarge now exposes the same formatter through its peer-controlled command field. Downstream applications using `{:?}` or tracing's `?error` can consequently receive injected log lines or terminal controls. Escape the string in CommandString::Debug and add malformed-command assertions for Debug alongside the existing Display regression test.

- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/p2p_core/tests/decode_v2.rs:35-41: Assert the exact decoding result for unassigned V2 IDs
The transport comparison correctly classifies both UnknownCommand and payload-decoding failures as accepted framing, but this leaves the newly added empty-command fallback unprotected. Replacing that fallback in decode_v2 with CommandString::TX would still pass the supplied vectors while dispatching unassigned IDs as transactions. The pinned Core GetMessageType returns the table's empty string for these slots. Keep the transport oracle and add exact assertions that IDs 5 and 29–32 return UnknownCommand { bytes: [0; 12] }, plus a successful assigned-ID case such as decimal ID 18 followed by an eight-byte ping nonce. These assertions would pin the new error contract and payload dispatch separately from transport acceptance.

Agreed, and fixed in a follow-up commit (8a92f86, p2p_core%fix: escape peer-controlled commands in Debug output): the escaping moves into CommandString::write_escaped, which both Debug and the three error Display formatters now use, and the test checks the full Debug text for a newline and an ESC sequence. Since this PR is merged, the commit will go up with the next themed p2p_core pull request rather than as a PR of its own.

Agreed, and fixed in a follow-up commit (c7a94ec, p2p_core%test: pin the exact result of unassigned V2 short IDs): IDs 5 and 29–32 must each decode to exactly UnknownCommand { bytes: [0; 12] }, and ID 18 with an 8-byte nonce to Ping; changing the fallback to tx fails every case. In particular: - `TxInvalid::Oversize` is never returned; - a transaction with several inputs whose first prevout is null counts as a coinbase; - a block whose merkle tree has equal sibling hashes passes, although its root matches a block without the repeat; - only an empty block fails the length check, whatever its serialized size. This pull request aligns them. Both checks are pinned by a corpus generated by running a program against the reference implementation at the pin above. Each program is embedded in the section it generated, and each fix extends its program with the shapes it changes. The transaction check commits were part of #67, which superseded #63. They move here so that #67 covers `dash-p2p-core` only. ## Additional Information | Description | Notes | Reference implementation | Corpus | | ----------- | ----- | ------------------------ | ------ | | Pin the transaction check order | The corpus covers every context-free reason a valid `Amount` can reach. An amount only holds values within the money range, so the two per-output range reasons are not covered. The total-too-large reason is. Motivation
dash-p2p-corediverges from the reference implementation (dashpay/dashv24.0.0-rc.3) in how it frames and bounds P2P messages, which inventory types it knows, and how many headers it accepts. In particular:headers2is capped at 2000 headers instead of 8000.This pull request aligns them. Where the behaviour has a library entry point in the reference implementation, the claim comes with a corpus section generated by running a program against it at the pin above. Each program is embedded in the section it generated. Where the behaviour lives only in the reference implementation's message handler, the claim is cited.
It supersedes #59, #64 and #65, which are reworked here into one series. The
dash-primitivestransaction check changes that this pull request carried before, which superseded #63, now have their own pull request.Additional Information

dash-p2p-core.ProtocolVersionwraps ani32instead of au32.P2pDecodeError::Consensuscarries theDecodeErrorinstead of its message.P2pDecodeError::PayloadTooLarge::commandis aCommandString, and its message escapes the command. Every command, known or not, is bounded byMAX_P2P_PAYLOAD_SIZE.decode_v2refuses contents above 1 + 12 +MAX_P2P_PAYLOAD_SIZEbytes withPayloadTooLarge. It reports contents that end before the type as the newP2pDecodeError::MissingCommand, and an invalid long-form type as the newP2pDecodeError::InvalidCommand. An unassigned short ID within the reference implementation's tables decodes as an empty command, givingUnknownCommand.P2pMsg::decode_payloadreports a command that failsCommandString::is_valid_v2asInvalidCommandinstead ofUnknownCommand.InvTypehas a variant for every inventory type the reference implementation defines.Headers2accepts up to 8000 headers. DecodingHeadersandHeaders2reports a count the remaining input cannot hold asDecodeError::Eof.MAX_P2P_PAYLOAD_SIZE(now exported at the crate root),CommandString::is_valid_v2,ShortId::is_in_table,InvType::command,InvType::is_tx,InvType::is_block,Headers::MAX_COUNT,Headers2::MAX_COUNT,Headers2::max_countandProtocolVersion::INCREASE_MAX_HEADERS2are new.How Has This Been Tested?
just comb(just test lint fuzz::test, CodeQL 2.27.2 included) passed on every commit, rebased ondevelop(f2fdb28), on x86_64 Linux. Since #66,dash-powbuilds without warnings there, so no local patch was needed. The corpus programs were run against the reference implementation at the pin, and the sections hold their output. Each section says how to run its program.

Agent disclosure
Code, tests, corpus programs, commit messages and this description were generated with Claude Code using Claude Opus 5.5, running autonomously as an agent on behalf of the author. The agent also ran the corpus programs against the reference implementation, answered the review in follow-up commits, and split and rebased the branch. The branch was reviewed by Claude Code agents, using Opus 5.5 for two review rounds and Sonnet 5.5 for a simplification pass.
