Consumer translation currently logs credential JSON errors and plugin rendering failures, then submits a consumer with those entries omitted. An invalid update can therefore silently remove configured credentials or plugins.

Return a contextual error and no translation result instead. Both providers and the admission validator already propagate translation errors before submitting configuration. Existing missing-credential-Secret behavior is preserved.

Add regression tests for malformed/non-object credential and plugin configuration, missing plugin Secrets, valid inline/Secret credentials, and error propagation through both providers.

Validation:

  • New failure-path regression tests fail against the original translator and pass with the fix.
  • go test ./api/... ./internal/... ./pkg/... passed.
  • go vet ./internal/adc/translator ./internal/provider/apisix ./internal/provider/api7ee ./internal/webhook/v1 passed.
  • No live ADC/Kubernetes E2E run was performed.

Related: apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2842.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid consumer credential or plugin configurations now stop processing and return an error instead of being logged and skipped.
    • Errors identify the affected consumer and configuration category, and failed updates no longer return partial results.

📝 Walkthrough

Consumer translation now stops and returns a contextual error when credential configuration cannot be parsed or plugin configuration cannot be rendered. Tests cover these errors, valid translation, and error reporting through both provider implementations.

Changes: Consumer Configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reject invalid consumer configuration
internal/adc/translator/consumer.go, internal/adc/translator/consumer_test.go
Translation returns an error and no result for credential parsing or plugin rendering failures. Tests cover malformed and non-object configurations, missing plugin Secrets, and valid credential and plugin configurations.
Verify provider error propagation
internal/provider/api7ee/provider_test.go, internal/provider/apisix/provider_test.go
Tests verify that Update errors identify the consumer and whether the invalid configuration is a credential or plugin.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security issue introduced. The production diff only replaces logging-and-skipping with contextual errors and a nil translation result. The new errors contain consumer, credential/plugin, and Secret names, but do not include credential or plugin payload values; JSON parse errors do not serialize the invalid payload. Provider and webhook paths return translation errors before configuration submission. No changed code affects database storage, authorization, ownership checks, TLS settings, shared-resource deletion, or secret-reference resolution. Categories 1–7: no issues found.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

Blocking issue: the PR adds only in-process unit tests. consumer_test.go calls TranslateConsumerV1alpha1 directly, and both provider tests call New(...).Update with a synthetic object and NewDefaultTranslateContext; neither exercises the Kubernetes API, controller reconciliation, or an APISIX service. The changed-file inventory contains no test/e2e file. Existing webhook E2E cases cover admission validation of an invalid plugin algorithm, not this translator failure path or provider submission behavior.

Resolution

Add E2E coverage through the existing test/e2e harness. Exercise a valid Consumer, then invalid credential and plugin configurations through the Kubernetes API and controller. Verify the update is rejected, no partial Consumer is submitted, and the last valid APISIX configuration remains. Retain the current unit tests for detailed translation assertions.

Reject a null credential configuration.

The CRD preserves config without a type constraint, and its oneOf rule only requires the field to be present. Therefore, config: null can reach the translator. json.Unmarshal accepts it and leaves authConfig nil.

Reject a nil map after decoding and add a null regression case.
