Preserve fractional seconds when translating upstream timeouts to ADC. Previously, a 500ms timeout became 0 in ApisixUpstream or the 60-second fallback in ApisixRoute, while 1500ms became 1. BackendTrafficPolicy zero-valued fields now retain the documented 60-second default.

Backports apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2894 at c37d5ac064cd644f488dfdf6654c6cad7bc07e29 without changes to the patch. ADC timeout fields use float64; duration translations retain fractional seconds, and ingress assignments and E2E assertions are updated for the numeric type. Ingress annotations still accept integer seconds; this does not change their parsing contract.

Validation:

  • All three upstream regression tests failed against the pre-fix code, reproducing truncation and incorrect defaults.
  • go test ./api/... ./internal/... ./pkg/... passed after the fix.
  • go vet ./internal/adc/translator/... passed.
  • Formatting and git diff --check passed.

Live-cluster E2E tests were not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserved fractional-second precision when configuring connect, read, and send timeouts.
    • Prevented subsecond timeout values from being truncated during route, upstream, and backend policy translation.
    • Maintained the 60-second default connect timeout when no value is configured.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage confirming accurate conversion and preservation of millisecond-based timeout settings across supported configurations.

📝 Walkthrough

Timeout fields and translator paths now preserve fractional-second values instead of truncating them to integers. The changes also retain timeout defaults and add translation tests for fractional values and an unset connect timeout.

Changes: Fractional Timeout Translation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeout types and translation
api/adc/types.go, internal/adc/translator/apisixroute.go, internal/adc/translator/apisixupstream.go, internal/adc/translator/ingress.go, internal/adc/translator/policies.go
The public timeout fields use float64. Translator paths preserve fractional seconds. Ingress timeouts retain the 60-second fallback, and backend traffic policies use the configured duration or the default upstream timeout.
Timeout translation tests
internal/adc/translator/timeouts_test.go, test/e2e/ingress/annotations.go
Tests cover fractional timeout values for upstreams, HTTP routes, and backend traffic policies. They also verify the default connect timeout and use floating-point expectations in ingress annotations.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c231e

Fractional timeouts work on the other covered upstream paths, but fractional BackendTrafficPolicy values are rejected, and a negative subsecond route value can produce an invalid timeout. Address these gaps before relying on those inputs.

Explanation

PASS — The PR only changes ADC timeout fields from int to float64 and preserves fractional duration values in three translators. Added tests cover 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, and the 60-second default. The changed hunks add no logging, response handling, database persistence, authorization endpoints, ownership checks, TLS security flags, shared-resource deletion, or secret-reference resolution. Categories 1–7: No issues found.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

❌ Blocking Issue — The PR does not add an end-to-end regression for the changed fractional-timeout flows. The new tests in internal/adc/translator/timeouts_test.go call translator functions directly. The only E2E diff changes existing Ingress annotation assertions from integer to float literals; that fixture still uses 2s, 3s, and 4s, so it does not test fractional input. Existing ApisixUpstream E2E coverage also uses whole-second values, and no E2E coverage verifies the ApisixRoute or BackendTrafficPolicy fractional/default paths.

Resolution

Add live E2E tests that create ApisixUpstream, ApisixRoute, and BackendTrafficPolicy resources through Kubernetes, then assert the resulting APISIX dataplane configuration. Use fractional values such as 500ms, 1500ms, and 2500ms, and verify the documented 60-second defaults for unset fields. Keep the existing Ingress annotation test for integer-second parsing, then run the applicable E2E suite.

Preserve the fallback for non-positive route timeouts.

cmp.Or retains -0.5 for -500ms, so the ADC route receives an invalid timeout instead of the 60-second fallback. The CRD does not constrain these duration strings, while APISIX requires timeout values greater than zero. Map non-positive durations to the default and preserve positive fractional values.

Review comment at @internal/adc/translator/apisixroute.go at line 92:
Update the timeout conversion in the route translation flow to map zero and
negative durations to the default timeout while preserving positive fractional
seconds. Replace the cmp.Or usage for Connect, Read, and Send with a shared
helper near the timeout construction, and remove the cmp dependency if no longer
used.

@AlinsRan I checked again. The current ApisixRoute CRD does not prohibit negative timeout values.

  • In api/v2/apisixroute_types.go, UpstreamTimeout uses metav1.Duration. This type accepts signed durations such as "-500ms".
  • In config/crd/bases/apisix.apache.org_apisixroutes.yaml, Line 328–341, the timeout fields have only type: string. No pattern or CEL rule requires a non-negative value.
  • The admission webhook delegates to ADC validation. However, it allows admission when that validation is unavailable, so it does not guarantee rejection.

Thus, "-500ms" can reach buildTimeout, where cmp.Or(-0.5, 60) returns -0.5.

My original wording was too broad: the old code did not default all negative values. It defaulted negative subsecond values only because integer conversion truncated them to zero. Explicitly rejecting negative durations is also a valid solution; defaulting them is not the only option.

The negative-value concern remains valid, but it is a validation gap rather than a general fallback contract.

Align BackendTrafficPolicy validation with fractional durations.

The test constructs metav1.Duration values of 1500ms and 2500ms directly, but the BackendTrafficPolicy CRD admits only strings matching ^[0-9]+s$. An admitted policy therefore cannot reach this fractional translation path. Timeout is documented as a Kubernetes Duration, and the other upstream timeout resources accept fractional duration strings.

Update the BackendTrafficPolicy validation pattern and regenerate the CRD so the test covers a supported input. Keep the independent 60s default unchanged.

Update the BackendTrafficPolicy timeout validation pattern to accept fractional
Kubernetes duration strings such as 1500ms and 2500ms, while preserving the
independent 60s default behavior. Regenerate the corresponding CRD artifacts so
the validation used by admitted policies matches the fractional translation path
exercised by TestAttachBackendTrafficPolicyToUpstreamPreservesSubsecondValues.
