๐Ÿ” Why Reinvent The Cryptographic Wheel?

In the modern web, data breaches are not a matter of "if" but "when." Every developer needs to know how to properly encrypt sensitive user data, API keys, and database backups. However, implementing cryptography from scratch is a recipe for disaster. One small mistakeโ€”like reusing an Initialization Vector (IV) or using a weak hashing algorithmโ€”can render your entire security model useless.

Nodejs Encryption Decryption is a battle-tested, open-source toolkit that provides production-ready cryptographic utilities for Node.js applications. It abstracts away the complexity of the native crypto module while strictly adhering to industry best practices (NIST guidelines).

This repository is not just a wrapper; it is a comprehensive educational resource. It includes implementations of AES-256-GCM (the gold standard for symmetric encryption), RSA-OAEP (for asymmetric encryption), and PBKDF2/Argon2 (for secure password hashing). Whether you are building a banking app, a messaging platform, or a simple SaaS tool, this toolkit ensures your data remains impenetrable.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The Security Architecture

Building a secure application requires a layered approach. Here is how this toolkit structures the encryption lifecycle.

๐Ÿ”’ Layer 1: Password Hashing (One-Way)

Passwords should never be encrypted; they must be hashed. The toolkit uses Argon2id (the winner of the Password Hashing Competition) by default. Unlike MD5 or SHA-256, Argon2 is memory-hard, meaning it is incredibly resistant to GPU-based brute-force attacks. It automatically generates a unique salt for every password and embeds it in the hash string.

๐Ÿ” Layer 2: Symmetric Encryption (AES-256-GCM)

For encrypting large amounts of data (like user messages or database fields), we use AES-256 in GCM (Galois/Counter Mode). GCM is an authenticated encryption mode. This means it doesn't just hide the data; it also generates a cryptographic "tag" that verifies the data hasn't been tampered with. If an attacker modifies even a single bit of the ciphertext, the decryption will fail immediately.

๐Ÿ”‘ Layer 3: Asymmetric Encryption (RSA)

For secure key exchange or digital signatures, the toolkit provides utilities for RSA-OAEP. This allows you to encrypt data with a public key and decrypt it only with the corresponding private key. It is perfect for secure communication between microservices.

โš™๏ธ Core Modules & Capabilities

Module Algorithm Use Case
Symmetric AES-256-GCM Encrypting database fields, files, and messages
Asymmetric RSA-OAEP (2048/4096) Secure key exchange and digital signatures
Hashing Argon2id / Bcrypt Storing user passwords securely
Key Derivation PBKDF2 / Scrypt Deriving encryption keys from user passwords
Randomness CSPRNG Generating cryptographically secure tokens and IVs

๐Ÿง  Under The Hood: The IV Problem

The most common mistake developers make with AES is reusing the Initialization Vector (IV). The IV is a random string of bytes that ensures that encrypting the exact same message twice produces completely different ciphertexts.

If you reuse an IV with AES-GCM, you completely destroy the security of the encryption. An attacker can recover the authentication key and decrypt all your data. This is not a theoretical vulnerability; it has broken real-world systems.

Our toolkit handles IV generation automatically. Every time you call the encrypt() function, it generates a fresh, cryptographically secure random IV using crypto.randomBytes(12). It then prepends this IV to the ciphertext. During decryption, it extracts the IV from the payload, ensuring you never have to manage this dangerous state manually.
