The installer's welcome screen now has a "Supported devices detected" card listing the supported devices plugged in at that moment (name and brand), with a spinner while it looks, and a plain message when there are none or the check cannot run.

How: the app has a new headless mode, openmouse-gpui --list-supported <file>, which runs the same device detection as the Overview page, writes the result as JSON and exits without opening a window. The installer writes its embedded copy of the app to a temp folder, runs it that way (25 s timeout, no console window), reads the file and deletes the folder. So the installer and the app always agree on what counts as supported. The scan runs in the background and never blocks Install. It is skipped in uninstall mode.

Checked on this machine: the listing takes about 0.7 s and returned the three supported devices that are connected, and the release installer renders the card correctly. Not yet run through the full install and uninstall.

Note: a Logitech receiver is listed under its product name ("USB Receiver"), since the receiver does not report the paired mouse's name until it is connected.

Note

Add supported-device card to installer welcome screen

  • The installer writes the embedded GPUI app to a temp dir and runs it with the supported-device listing argument to get a JSON device list (25s timeout) — see devices.rs
  • GPUI gains a headless mode: supported_devices.rs parses the argument, starts HID discovery, and writes product name and brand as JSON before any window or asset loading. Discovery or serialization failures produce an empty list
  • The welcome screen shows a spinner while scanning, an unavailable message on failure, up to four detected devices, and a count for extras — see main.rs. The scan runs on a background executor; uninstall mode skips it
  • Risk: launching the GPUI binary with the device-listing argument now exits headlessly before app initialization; the installer window height changed to 440

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The installer now automatically detects supported devices during installation.
    • The welcome screen shows scanning progress, detected devices, unavailable results, or an empty state.
    • Up to four detected devices are displayed, with an overflow count for additional devices.
    • Device detection runs in the background so the installer remains responsive.
    • Uninstall mode is unchanged and does not perform device detection.

📝 Walkthrough

The GPUI app can export detected HID device data as JSON. The installer launches that export in a subprocess, reads the results, and displays device scan status and detected devices on the install screen.

Changes: Supported Device Detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Headless device data export
gpui/src/supported_devices.rs, gpui/src/lib.rs, gpui/src/bin/main.rs
The GPUI app recognizes --list-supported, lists HID candidates, and writes device data to a requested JSON file. It returns an empty list when device access, listing, or serialization fails.
Installer device scan
gpui/installer/Cargo.toml, gpui/installer/src/devices.rs, gpui/installer/src/lib.rs
The installer adds JSON deserialization dependencies and a public Device model and scan function. The function runs the embedded app, reads its JSON output, and reports errors or timeouts.
Install-screen device status
gpui/installer/src/main.rs
Install mode starts a background scan and displays its status or detected devices. The screen shows up to four devices with an overflow count. The window height increases to 440px. Uninstall mode skips scanning.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e8147

Detection failures can be shown as “None plugged in right now.” This is a bounded, non-blocking display issue; the change is mergeable with owner awareness or a follow-up fix.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e8147

The scan is advisory, and device names are used only for display. No privilege-crossing attack was established. The new temporary-executable flow nevertheless depends on filesystem isolation, and cleanup after interruption remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new flow's demonstrated scope is local HID discovery, execution under the installer's process authority, and temporary filesystem access. Broader cross-user or administrative exposure depends on launch identity and directory permissions that were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No privilege-crossing attack was established for direct CLI invocation. The caller selects a file to create or overwrite, but no separate privileged broker is shown. Likewise, replacing the extracted executable would require access to its directory; access by a lower-trust principal remains unproven rather than a verified attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Device-derived product and brand strings cross the JSON boundary as serialized strings and are rendered as text. They are not used by this consumer to construct executable paths, command arguments, or device-control requests.
  • observed — The temporary directory name is derived only from the installer PID. Creation accepts an existing directory, and executable launch and result consumption use ordinary filesystem paths without explicit ownership or ACL verification. The source therefore relies on external filesystem isolation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The current UI initiates one scan, limiting ordinary overlap. Repeated calls within one process would share paths, while interruption or failed cleanup could leave artifacts. These are lifecycle limitations, not evidence that concurrent execution or cross-user compromise occurs in the current UI.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an exclusively created private temporary directory with verified target-platform permissions and cleanup scoped to that directory. This would make executable and result ownership explicit instead of relying on the surrounding temporary directory's isolation.
  • proposed — Validate successful child completion and fresh result publication, and define child termination and cleanup on installer shutdown. These measures would strengthen failure containment without turning the advisory scan into an installation prerequisite.

🟡 Medium src/supported_devices.rs:41

When list_candidates() fails, write() converts the failure into [], so the installer treats an unavailable device runtime as a successful scan and displays “None plugged in right now” instead of Unavailable. Preserve the failure separately—for example, exit nonzero without writing a success file and have the installer check the exit status.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds an automatically triggered installer device-detection workflow, including a new subprocess/HID integration and visible UI behavior. An unresolved finding also shows that discovery failures can be presented as “no devices” instead of unavailable, so the change merits human review.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep detection failure distinct from an empty scan.

If list_candidates() fails, this branch writes []. The installer then treats the scan as successful and displays “None plugged in right now” instead of its unavailable message. Return a failure from the exporter, exit unsuccessfully from the headless branch, and accept an empty array only after a successful scan. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
