Pushing a v*.*.* tag (or running the workflow by hand with a tag) now publishes a GitHub Release with two files:

  • OpenMouseDesktopSetup.exe, the Windows installer. The name never changes, so releases/latest/download/OpenMouseDesktopSetup.exe is a permanent "newest installer" link.
  • latest.json, which the app's update check already reads from releases/latest/download/latest.json. It has the version, notes, and the installer's URL, SHA-256 and size, so a future in-app updater can download the installer and verify it.

Release notes (and the notes field) come from the app's own changelog (gpui/js/lib/changelog.ts), so GitHub and the in-app "What's new" match.

Safeguards: the run stops before publishing if the tag, gpui/Cargo.toml and gpui/installer/Cargo.toml versions differ, or if the changelog has no entry for the version. It also runs the tests first.

Cutting a release: bump the version in both Cargo.toml files, add the changelog entry, merge, then tag.

Not included yet: signing. The update file has a hash but no signature, so a future in-app updater should add one (e.g. ed25519 with a key in repo secrets) before it installs anything automatically. The in-app download/install itself is also still to do; the app only checks for now.

Tested the notes/latest.json generator locally (including the missing-changelog failure). The workflow itself has not run end to end yet.

Note

Add installer and latest.json publication to release workflow for in-app updates

  • Adds make-release-files.mjs, which builds latest.json and notes.md from the version-matched entry in gpui/js/dist/changelog.json. The manifest includes the download URL, byte size, and SHA-256 digest of the installer.
  • Updates release.yml to reject tags whose version differs from gpui/Cargo.toml or gpui/installer/Cargo.toml, run cargo test before building, copy the installer as the stable OpenMouseDesktopSetup.exe name, and publish the installer plus latest.json using the generated notes.
  • Documents in update_check.rs that latest.json is published by each GitHub Release for a future download and install flow.
  • Behavioral Change: the release job now fails early on version mismatches in the two Cargo manifests and when the changelog entry for the tag version is missing.

📝 Walkthrough

The release workflow now validates release versions, runs tests before building, generates installer metadata and release notes, and publishes them with the installer. The update-check module documentation identifies latest.json as the release metadata source.

Changes: Release Pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate release version and tests
.github/workflows/release.yml
The workflow checks the selected tag against both Cargo manifest versions. It runs cargo test in the GPUI workspace before building.
Generate and publish release files
.github/scripts/make-release-files.mjs, .github/workflows/release.yml, gpui/src/update_check.rs
The script generates latest.json with installer metadata and writes the release notes to notes.md. The workflow publishes the installer and generated files with those notes. The update-check documentation describes the release metadata.

The new release workflow can publish an installer that was built from a different commit than its tag. It can also point the permanent download and update-check links at a prerelease or an older version. Both are straightforward to guard against and should be fixed before relying on this workflow for releases.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in gpui/src/update_check.rs: Module documentation now identifies each GitHub Release’s latest.json as the update source and documents its installer URL and SHA-256 contents, replacing references to the updater plugin, TypeScript counterpart, and absent signature/download/install behavior.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/scripts/make-release-files.mjs: Adds the complete release-file generation script, including argument validation, changelog version lookup, installer metadata generation, SHA-256 calculation, output-file writing, and status/error reporting.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/release.yml: Release documentation now defines the installer and latest.json artifacts, their permanent download paths, required version agreement, and updated manual tag-input description.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/release.yml: The workflow derives TAG from the dispatch input or pushed ref, then compares its v-stripped version with both Cargo manifest versions and exits with an error when any differ.

🟠 High workflows/release.yml:97

Publishing an older maintenance tag unconditionally marks it as the latest release, replacing the update feed with the older installer; update_check::is_newer then stops advertising the newer release. Since gh release create selects the latest release automatically by default, omit --latest or only pass it when this tag is newer.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the production release pipeline to publish installer and update-feed artifacts, enabling customer-facing in-app update discovery rather than making a minor CI-only adjustment. An unresolved high-severity finding also notes that forcing an older maintenance release as latest could replace the active update feed, so the release behavior merits human review.

## gh release create

    `gh release create [<tag>] [<filename>... | <pattern>...]
    `

Create a new GitHub Release for a repository.

A list of asset files may be given to upload to the new release. To define a display label for an asset, append text starting with `#` after the file name.

If a matching git tag does not yet exist, one will automatically get created from the latest state of the default branch. Use `--target` to point to a different branch or commit for the automatic tag creation. Use `--verify-tag` to abort the release if the tag doesn't already exist. To fetch the new tag locally after the release, do `git fetch --tags origin`.

To create a release from an annotated git tag, first create one locally with git, push the tag to GitHub, then run this command. Use `--notes-from-tag` to get the release notes from the annotated git tag. If the tag is not annotated, the commit message will be used instead.

Use `--generate-notes` to automatically generate notes using GitHub Release Notes API. When using automatically generated release notes, a release title will also be automatically generated unless a title was explicitly passed. Additional release notes can be prepended to automatically generated notes by using the `--notes` flag.

By default, the release is created even if there are no new commits since the last release. This may result in the same or duplicate release which may not be desirable in some cases. Use `--fail-on-no-commits` to fail if no new commits are available. This flag has no effect if there are no existing releases or this is the very first release.

## Immutable Releases

When release immutability is enabled for a repository, the following protections are enforced:

  * Git tags associated with a release cannot be modified or deleted.
  * Release assets cannot be modified or deleted.

Immutability is enforced only after a release is published. Draft releases can be modified or deleted, and the associated git tags can be modified or deleted as well.

When using the `create` command to attach assets to a release, separate API calls are made to create the release as a draft, upload the assets, and then publish the release. Immutability protections will be enforced ONLY after the release is published.

This action checks-out your repository under `$GITHUB_WORKSPACE`, so your workflow can access it.

Only a single commit is fetched by default, for the ref/SHA that triggered the workflow. Set `fetch-depth: 0` to fetch all history for all branches and tags. Refer here to learn which commit `$GITHUB_SHA` points to for different events.

The auth token is persisted in the local git config. This enables your scripts to run authenticated git commands. The token is removed during post-job cleanup. Set `persist-credentials: false` to opt-out.

When Git 2.18 or higher is not in your PATH, falls back to the REST API to download the files.

Build an existing tag from its tagged commit.

On a manual run, actions/checkout@v4 checks out the selected workflow ref because no ref is supplied. If TAG names an existing tag and the selected branch has later commits, the workflow builds the branch commit but publishes the assets under the existing tag. --target "$GITHUB_SHA" applies only when gh release create creates a tag, so it does not retarget an existing tag.

Resolve and check out an existing TAG before building, or reject the run when its commit differs from GITHUB_SHA.

Restrict which releases become latest.

A tag such as v1.2.3-rc.1 can pass the tag filter and version checks. Without --prerelease, the command publishes it as a full release; --latest then directs the stable installer and update-metadata URLs to that release. A manual release of an older stable version can also move those URLs backward. Reject prerelease tags and check that a stable version is newer before setting --latest, or publish prereleases separately without setting latest. (cli.github.com)

Review comment at @.github/workflows/release.yml at line 97:

--latest.
