DuplicateLinkException comes from the user's CSV, the same as the ValueError branch below it, so it should be a 400 and not a 500. Part of OWASP#1156
The handler called .get("prompt") on whatever JSON arrived, so a list
body raised AttributeError and came back as a 500 labelled as an AI
service error. A missing or blank prompt went straight to the model.
Part of OWASP#1156
The chatbot page shows the error field to the user as-is, so any exception message from generate_text ended up in the chat window. The response keeps its status code and the "AI Service Error" prefix; the exception is logged instead. Part of OWASP#1156
When the synchronous gap analysis fallback failed, the 503 body carried str(exc), which can include database or Neo4j connection details. The exception is already logged with logger.exception. Part of OWASP#1156
A non-integer value raised ValueError and came back as a 500, and a negative one went straight into the query, which Postgres rejects. Part of OWASP#1156

to apply defaults only when `limit` or `offset` is absent; pass supplied values,
including empty strings, to `int()` so invalid values produce the required 400
response.

With `or`, ?limit= fell back to the default instead of being rejected. Use the default only when the parameter is missing. Part of OWASP#1156

🟡 Minor · Handle malformed JSON through the prompt validation path. · web_main.py:1247-1249

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winHandle malformed JSON through the prompt validation path.
request.get_json(force=True)can raiseBadRequestbefore the prompt check. The application has no 400 handler, so malformed JSON receives Flask's generic HTML error page instead of the route's custom short message. Usesilent=Trueso malformed JSON reaches the same validation branch.Suggested fix

Fixes #1156
These are the five error paths from the issue. Each one is its own commit with its own test, so any of them can be dropped or reverted on its own.
Bad input now returns 400 instead of 500
CSV import, repeated row (
eb963035). A CSV that has the same row twice makes the parser raiseDuplicateLinkException. That's a problem with the uploaded file, the same as theValueErrorbranch right below it, so both now go through oneexceptand return 400 with the parser's message. The test uploads a real two-row CSV, with no mocks./completionwithout a usable prompt (655c8b34). The handler used to call.get("prompt")on whatever JSON arrived. It now checks that the body is an object with a non-empty stringpromptbefore doing anything else, so["x"],{},{"prompt": " "}and{"prompt": 1}all get a 400 and the model is never called. The chatbot page always sends{"prompt": ...}, so it isn't affected./admin/imports/runs?limit=…&offset=…(ef62cc42). A non-integer value is now a 400 instead of aValueError, and so is a negative one. SQLite treats a negativeLIMITas "no limit", but Postgres rejects it, so it was a 500 there too. I didn't add an upper cap because this is an admin-only route. Happy to add one if you want it to matchMAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE.Exception text no longer goes to the client
map_analysisfallback (95b907eb). When the synchronous fallback failed, the 503 body includedstr(fallback_exc), which can contain connection details from the Neo4j or database driver. The body is now justGap analysis unavailable. The exception was already logged withlogger.exception, so nothing is lost on the server side./completionerrors (7e0c681c). The response was{"error": "AI Service Error: <str(e)>"}, andchatbot.tsxputsjson.errorstraight into the chat window. It now returns{"error": "AI Service Error"}with the same status code as before, and logs the exception. The rate-limit message is unchanged. One question on this one. Provider 4xx errors (like the
400 INVALID_ARGUMENTcase inchat_completion_test.py) now get the generic message too. I went with that because I couldn't be sure every provider message is safe to show. If you'd rather keep the provider text for 4xx, it's a one-line change and I can switch it.Before and after
