raft doctor passed on hosts whose expiry worker was too old for new --disposable. the allocation guard was right to reject them, but the readiness check missed the same incompatibility.

the installed workers predate PROTOCOL = 1 and only stop expired boxes. they do not delete disposable boxes or record retention stop timestamps. this was stale host deployment, not a packaging defect.

after updating the worker, the live smoke exposed a second issue. lifecycle SSH inherited an open controller stdin pipe, so incus init waited for EOF while holding the expiry lock. the controller timed out, but the remote reader kept waiting. the fix closes stdin only for noninteractive transactions; execution and transfer paths stay unchanged.

changes

  • reuse the existing worker check in doctor, under the existing host lock, and name the failing location. no weakened guard or compatibility shim.
  • use ssh -n for lifecycle transactions so open stdin cannot stall allocation or block expiry.
  • add real host tests for stale/current readiness, open stdin on captured and streamed transactions, and subsequent lock acquisition.
  • document readiness, explicit deployment recovery, and transaction stdin behavior.

verification

  • before deployment, patched doctor rejected both configured ARM64 hosts with the location-specific diagnostic.
  • after the authorized Paris-only worker update, patched doctor passed there.
  • the unchanged transaction blocks with stdin held open and finishes after EOF. the patched captured and streamed transactions finish with that pipe still open, and the next transaction acquires the lock.
  • the installed CLI created a disposable 1 CPU / 4 GiB box with stdin closed, wrote/read a real guest file, and destroyed the box.
  • the patched CLI created disposable boxes while controller stdin remained open. guest execution passed, and a 4,096-byte binary upload/download round trip matched exactly.
  • Ruff lint, Ruff format checks, Python compilation, capacity policy checks, 15 real image archive cases, and archive safety/transfer checks passed.

the initial stalled init was canceled by its exact task-owned PID. all three allocated smoke boxes were destroyed, staging and controller fixtures were removed, and the final locked inventory was empty. the expiry service's last result is success with exit status 0; its timer remains active.

live scope and remaining limits

only /usr/local/lib/raft/expire-worker on Paris was atomically replaced under the lifecycle lock, after confirming an empty project. the installed file is root-owned mode 0755 and matches the checkout SHA-256. no service, timer, network, Incus, or image configuration was changed.

Ashburn and its stopped box were left untouched, so that host still needs an authorized worker deployment. the editable installed CLI was not switched; the readiness and stdin fixes remain in this PR.

a separate smoke assertion expecting piped raft exec input failed. comparison showed both the installed and patched CLI deliver empty stdin there. that existing behavior was preserved rather than changed as part of this lifecycle fix. interactive terminal behavior was not re-tested.

Review in Change Stack →

raft doctor now checks expiry-worker compatibility under the host lock, and lifecycle transactions use ssh -n so open controller stdin does not stall them.

  • An authorized worker deployment is still required on Ashburn; its host and stopped box were left unchanged.
  • Piped raft exec input still delivers empty stdin, and interactive terminal behavior was not retested.
  • The author reports successful readiness, transaction-lock, smoke, lint, compilation, and archive checks; these results were not independently verified.

Walkthrough

Lifecycle transactions now use SSH with stdin disabled. Doctor checks expiry-worker compatibility through a locked transaction and reports the location when the check fails. Feature verification covers doctor readiness, stale-worker behavior, and transaction stdin handling. Documentation describes the check, its scope, and deployment steps for an outdated worker.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6cbbd

The documentation overpromises piped exec input, and a stalled host check can leave feature verification hung. Correct both before merging.
