What this is

realize dispatches on problem_family × grammar. That pair is the domain axis, and four pairs are reachable in checker.py. One of them — term_series / guarded_integer_sequence — was declared in schema/realize.v0.json:61, dispatched in checker.py:49,76, and unit-tested in tests/test_series.py, while shipping no spec at all. The CLI never ran it.

This adds a declarative V&V matrix over all four domains, a dev-only runner, and an independent Lean corroboration layer.

Domain Semantics Shipped a spec before?
formula.bounded_coeff_template exact_rational yes
encoder.finite_case_table finite_relation yes
term_series.typed_grid finite_integer yes
term_series.guarded_integer_sequence finite_integer no

Verification vs validation

The two questions V&V runs together (IEEE 1012, DO-178C):

  • Verification — did we build the thing right? This is realize check, and always was.
  • Validation — did we build the right thing? NONCLAIMS §7 already says the package cannot discharge this, and no amount of green CI closes it.

So what is configured here is verification across the domain axis, plus the bookkeeping that keeps the validation gap visible rather than invisible: every clause that constrains must cite a source, and every certificate must carry the boundary its claim is good inside. VV.md states this plainly, and NONCLAIMS gains §11 saying a green V&V run is not validation.

The matrix

vv/domains.json declares four domains and 21 cases.

Every domain must be observed reaching all four verdicts and an adapter reject. A domain that can only be shown passing is a domain nobody has watched fail. Coverage is read out of realize.verdicts at run time, so adding a grammar to the kernel fails the run until a domain arrives with it.

Per-case objectives: outcome, exit_table (the matrix's exit codes are checked against verdicts.EXIT, so the documented table cannot drift from the code), exit_observed, determinism, scope_completeness.

Per-domain objectives: declared_semantics, outcome_coverage, tamper_evidence (change one spec field and a passing candidate loses its binding), no_self_grading (synthesize returns no verdict anywhere in its payload), provenance.

Lean

vv/lean/ re-states the same finite facts in Lean 4 and proves them with kernel-checked decide. Core Lean only — no Mathlib, no lake, no network at check time. Rationals are carried as halves, since every coefficient in D is a whole number of halves.

No native_decide, no sorry, no new axiom, no compiler overrides. The runner greps for all of these and refuses the file before lean is invoked, because a file that may assume things corroborates nothing.

Proving things in a second language is not yet a cross-check, though — two implementations drift apart happily when nobody compares them. So each file reports the quantities it settled, and the runner recomputes all 29 from the Python kernel and compares. A disagreement fails the run, and so does a fact that quietly stops being reported.

That comparison is the one that bites when a frozen count in tests/test_counts.py is edited to match a drifting kernel. The Python suite cannot catch that, because the suite is the thing that was edited. Verified: with D widened to six elements and test_counts.py edited to expect 1296, pytest goes green and the cross-check still fails on formula.template_card: lean '625' vs python '1296'.

Facts are derived rather than restated. series.witness asks Lean to enumerate and take the shortest valid series; it and Python independently produce add1,add3,add3 — which is not the witness test_series.py happens to name, so the two sides agree about the enumeration and not just the answer.

Product surface

Unchanged. No new CLI verb, no fifth outcome. scripts/vv.py is dev-only, is not part of the pip package, cannot mint a PASS, and exits 0/1 rather than on the verdict scale — a harness must not look like it is issuing verdicts.

Gates were negative-tested

Each of these was confirmed to fail when it should, then restored:

Gate Injected fault Caught
grammar_coverage domain dropped from the matrix yes
grammar_coverage grammar added to verdicts.py, no domain yes
provenance K provenance stripped from a spec yes
exit_table matrix claims exit 0 for UNSAT yes
outcome satisfies_R stubbed to True (a false candidate PASSes) yes
Lean integrity sorry added refused pre-check
Lean integrity native_decide substituted for decide refused pre-check
Lean proof a frozen count changed to a wrong value yes
cross_check kernel drift + frozen test edited to match yes
cross_check a reported fact deleted yes
Lean absent no toolchain installed skipped by default, fails under --lean-required

CI

  • test — unchanged, except ruff check now also covers scripts/vv.py by name.
  • vv — one job per domain, fail-fast: false, report uploaded as an artifact.
  • vv-lean — installs the pinned toolchain (cached on vv/lean/lean-toolchain) and runs --lean-required.

All seven jobs are green on d670694. vv-lean installs Lean and cross-checks all 29 facts in about nine seconds.

A note on the second commit

The first push failed CI, and the cause was in this PR: it widened the lint path to all of scripts/, which dragged the pre-existing scripts/export_web_fixtures.py into scope.

ruff 0.16 dropped E402 from its default rule set and enabled RUF100, so every # noqa: E402 marker in scripts/ now reads as unused — while the same markers are still load-bearing under ruff 0.15, where E402 is enabled. Since pyproject.toml allows ruff>=0.6, a file that needs them cannot be clean under both.

scripts/vv.py now needs no suppression at all: its realize imports sit at the top of the module inside a try, with the src/ path fallback in the except branch for a checkout that has not been pip-installed. Clean under both 0.15.8 and 0.16.8, and the fallback is now exercised — with realize uninstalled, the runner still reaches all four domains green.

The stale markers in scripts/export_web_fixtures.py are deliberately left alone. They are pre-existing, and they belong with whoever widens the lint scope on purpose — worth doing, but not here.

Local run

ruff check src tests scripts/vv.py clean under 0.15.8 and 0.16.8
pytest 54 passed (was 44)
realize demo {three_state,max_formula,grid_recolor} ok
export_web_fixtures + git diff web/fixtures no drift
scripts/vv.py V&V objectives met
scripts/vv.py --lean-required V&V objectives met, 29 facts compared

Non-claims

NONCLAIMS.md gains two items, because this PR adds machinery that could be over-read:

  1. Lean corroboration is not a verdict. Agreement means two implementations reached the same answer about the same small finite object. Disagreement means one is wrong and does not say which.
  2. A green V&V run is not validation.

realize dispatches on problem_family x grammar, and one of those pairs --
term_series / guarded_integer_sequence -- was declared in schema/realize.v0.json
and handled in checker.py while shipping no spec at all. The CLI never ran it.

Adds a declarative V&V matrix over all four domains, a dev-only runner, and an
independent Lean corroboration layer.

vv/domains.json declares four domains and 21 cases. Every domain must be
observed reaching all four verdicts and an adapter reject -- a domain that can
only be shown passing is a domain nobody has watched fail. Coverage is read out
of realize.verdicts, so adding a grammar to the kernel fails the run until a
domain arrives with it.

Per-domain objectives: declared_semantics, outcome_coverage, tamper_evidence
(one changed spec field costs a passing candidate its binding), no_self_grading
(synthesize returns no verdict anywhere in its payload), and provenance (every
non-null R and K clause cites a source).

vv/lean/ re-states the same finite facts in Lean 4 and proves them with
kernel-checked decide: core Lean only, no Mathlib, no native_decide, no sorry,
no new axioms -- the runner refuses a file reaching for any of those before lean
is invoked. Each file reports the quantities it settled; the runner recomputes
all 29 from the Python kernel and compares. That comparison is what catches a
frozen count in tests/test_counts.py edited to match a drifting kernel, which
the Python suite cannot catch because the suite is what was edited.

The product surface is unchanged: no new CLI verb, no fifth outcome. The runner
exits 0/1 rather than on the verdict scale, is dev-only, and cannot mint a PASS.

NONCLAIMS 10-11 record what Lean agreement and a green V&V run do not
establish. VV.md carries the argument, including why validation stays open.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

CI failed on `ruff check src tests scripts` with 10 RUF100 errors. The cause
was mine: widening the lint path to all of scripts/ was not part of this
change, and it pulled the pre-existing scripts/export_web_fixtures.py into
scope along with it.

ruff 0.16 dropped E402 from its default rule set and enabled RUF100, so every
`# noqa: E402` marker in scripts/ now reads as unused. Those markers are also
load-bearing under ruff 0.15, where E402 is still enabled -- so a file needing
them cannot be clean under both, and pyproject allows ruff>=0.6.

Rather than pick a ruff version, scripts/vv.py no longer needs suppression at
all: the realize imports sit at the top of the module inside a try block, with
the src/ path fallback in the except branch for a checkout that has not been
pip-installed. Verified clean under both 0.15.8 and 0.16.8, and the fallback
itself is now exercised -- with realize uninstalled the runner still reaches
all four domains green.

CI lints scripts/vv.py by name instead of the whole directory. The stale noqa
markers in scripts/export_web_fixtures.py are left alone; they are pre-existing
and belong to whoever widens the lint scope on purpose.

Reproduced the failure first with `python3 -m ruff` -- a stale ruff 0.15.8 in
~/.local/bin was shadowing the pip-installed 0.16.8 that CI resolves.

CodeRabbit's pre-merge docstring check read 53.57% against an 89% threshold,
scoped to the two files this PR adds. Thirteen functions carried no docstring:
run_cli, fail, meet, objective_determinism, run_domain, render, main and the
three helpers nested in python_facts, plus three in tests/test_vv.py.

Every module in src/realize/ documents its functions, so the gap was this PR
drifting from the repo's own habit rather than a threshold worth arguing with.
Now 28 of 28.

No behaviour change. Verified: ruff clean under 0.15.8 and 0.16.8, 54 tests,
V&V objectives met with all 29 Lean facts compared, no web-fixture drift.

Four of CodeRabbit's five findings were valid and are fixed. The fifth was not.

Duplicate Lean fact names (Major, valid). The collection loop let a later `fact`
line overwrite an earlier one, so a second file could supply the value the owning
file got wrong -- in a cross-check whose whole job is catching drift. A repeated
name now fails the run even when both copies agree, since agreement is exactly
what would hide the overwrite. Confirmed: Grid.lean re-reporting
series.syntactic_121 with the correct value now fails.

Elan installer (Minor, valid). vv-lean fetched elan-init.sh from mutable master
and piped it to sh on pull_request. Now pinned to revision 0e36a07 and
checksummed before execution, so a tampered installer fails the step instead of
running; verified by corrupting a copy and watching the gate refuse it. The
pinned revision is byte-identical to what the job already ran. Added
`permissions: contents: read`, which is what zizmor flagged and all three jobs
need; artifact upload uses the runtime token, not this one.

Provenance (Minor, valid). Four specs cited a NONCLAIMS section explaining the
case rather than the source of R. That is precisely the sloppiness the
provenance objective exists to catch, and it passed the gate -- a citation that
does not cite. Each now names its origin, and the unrecognized-phrase spec says
plainly that it has no source, because it does not.

README (Minor, valid). vv/lean/README.md claimed success was "exit 0 and no
output". The files emit `fact` lines now; success is exit 0 with only those.

Lean placeholder (Critical, NOT valid). The finding says `(realizes . .larger)`
prevents Formula.lean from running. It does not: ASCII `.` and `·` are both
accepted, verified to compute identically and non-vacuously, and vv-lean passed
on the commit under review with that exact line. Normalized to `·` anyway, for
one spelling per file -- style, not a defect.

Verified: ruff clean under 0.15.8 and 0.16.8, 54 tests, all four domains, 29
facts compared, no web-fixture drift, workflow YAML parses.

15 checks passed
ZuluYokohama pushed a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 17, 2026
Two follow-ups from #1, each needing a different treatment: one was mechanically
closable, one was not.

Lint debt (closable). scripts/export_web_fixtures.py carried three `# noqa: E402`
markers that ruff 0.16 rejects as unused, while the same markers are
load-bearing under 0.15 -- so the file could not be clean under both, and
pyproject allows ruff>=0.6. It now uses the same try/except import shape as
vv.py and needs no suppression, verified under 0.15.8 and 0.16.8 with the bare
checkout fallback exercised. Both dev scripts with shebangs are now executable
(EXE001), and CI lints all of scripts/ rather than vv.py by name. That widening
is what broke CI in #1; this time every file in scope is clean under both
versions first.

Provenance (partly closable). The gate checked that a source string existed, not
that it named anything. Four specs in #1 passed it citing NONCLAIMS.md -- the
section explaining why a zero budget yields UNKNOWN -- as the source of the
relation in R. A reviewer caught that; the gate could not.

Three things about a citation are decidable and are now checked: that a
constraining clause is cited at all, that the citation is not blank, and that it
does not name one of this repository's own documents, which explain the package
and are never where a clause came from. A clause with no origin declares that
with `"unsourced": true` instead of narrating it, which is how
formula_unrecognized_phrase now reads.

The rule is split out as provenance_gaps() so it can be tested rather than only
exercised, and tests/test_vv.py now pins the exact failure that got through: a
repo document cited as an origin. A gate nobody has watched fail is the same
problem as a domain nobody has watched fail.

What does not close: whether a source names anything real. `VCOS §8.1 Table 2`
and `asdf` are the same shape. `unsourced` is a bypass and takes the author's
word. VV.md says so plainly, and says what changed is where the gap sits -- it
used to hide inside citations that looked fine, and now it is a marker you can
grep for.

Verified: ruff clean under 0.15.8 and 0.16.8 across src, tests and all of
scripts; 60 tests (was 54); four domains; 29 Lean facts compared; no
web-fixture drift.
