were excluded. The Pages custom domain is `fastled.io`; DNS remains on GitHub
Pages. Migration history is tracked in
[FastLED/FastLED#4878](https://github.com/FastLED/FastLED/issues/4878).

## HTTP redirect cutover (pending hosting and DNS access)

`vercel.json` prepares this static site for Vercel. Its `/docs/:path*` rule
returns HTTP 308 to `https://fastled.github.io/dox/:path*`; Vercel forwards the
query string. URL fragments remain client-side. There is no build step and
existing `.html` URLs remain enabled. GitHub Pages continues serving production
until the DNS cutover is verified; its browser redirect remains a fallback.

1. Import `FastLED/fastled-fastled.github.io` into the FastLED Vercel team. Use
production branch `gh-pages`, root directory `.`, and framework **Other**.
First deploy the branch containing this configuration as a public preview.
2. Check the preview with `curl -sSI` for `/docs`, `/docs/`,
`/docs/index.html`, and `/docs/d0/d00/example.html?search=FastLED`.
Each must return 308 and the corresponding `/dox/` destination, preserving
the query string. Verify the homepage, `/tools/paletteknife/`, its JavaScript,
a blog page, images, and CSS still return their expected content. Check a
missing non-docs path still returns 404.
3. Add `fastled.io` and `www.fastled.io` to the Vercel project, with `www`
redirecting to the apex. In Gandi, use the exact DNS records and any ownership
verification records Vercel supplies for this project. Record the existing
GitHub Pages DNS values first for rollback. Keep unrelated DNS records.
4. After DNS propagation and TLS provisioning, repeat the preview checks against
`https://fastled.io`, including the redirect status and `Location` header.
Only then is the HTTP redirect migration complete. Remove the old Pages
custom-domain binding after the successful cutover. The GitHub Pages preview
may remain available for rollback.
5. If validation fails, restore the recorded GitHub Pages DNS records and retain
its custom-domain binding until the incident is resolved.

## Removing a custom domain

If you get an error about a custom domain being taken, you may need to remove the custom domain from another repository.

  1. On GitHub, navigate to your site&#39;s repository.

  2. Under your repository name, click Settings. If you cannot see the &quot;Settings&quot; tab, select the dropdown menu, then click Settings.

Image: Screenshot of a repository header showing the tabs. The &quot;Settings&quot; tab is highlighted by a dark orange outline.

  3. In the &quot;Code, planning, and automation&quot; section of the sidebar, click Pages.

  4. Under &quot;Custom domain,&quot; click Remove.

Image: Screenshot of a custom domain. To the right of a text box reading &quot;example.com&quot;, and a &quot;Save&quot; button, is a button labeled &quot;Remove&quot; in red type.

## Securing your custom domain

If your GitHub Pages site is disabled but has a custom domain set up, it is at risk of a domain takeover. Having a custom domain configured with your DNS provider while your site is disabled could result in someone else hosting a site on one of your subdomains.

Verifying your custom domain prevents other GitHub users from using your domain with their repositories. If your domain is not verified, and your GitHub Pages site is disabled, you should immediately update or remove your DNS records with your DNS provider. For more information, see Verifying your custom domain for GitHub Pages.

# Troubleshooting custom domains and GitHub Pages

You can check for common errors to resolve issues with custom domains or HTTPS for your GitHub Pages site.

## Who can use this feature?

GitHub Pages is available in public repositories with GitHub Free and GitHub Free for organizations, and in public and private repositories with GitHub Pro, GitHub Team, GitHub Enterprise Cloud, and GitHub Enterprise Server. See GitHub&#39;s plans.

## In this article

  * CNAME errors
  * DNS misconfiguration
  * Custom domain names that are unsupported
  * HTTPS errors
  * URL formatting on Linux
  * Browser cache
  * Domain name taken

## CNAME errors

If you are publishing from a custom GitHub Actions workflow, any CNAME file is ignored and is not required.

If you are publishing from a branch, custom domains are stored in a CNAME file in the root of your publishing source. You can add or update this file through your repository settings or manually. For more information, see Managing a custom domain for your GitHub Pages site.

For your site to render at the correct domain, make sure your CNAME file still exists in the repository. For example, many static site generators force push to your repository, which can overwrite the CNAME file that was added to your repository when you configured your custom domain. If you build your site locally and push generated files to GitHub, make sure to pull the commit that added the CNAME file to your local repository first, so the file will be included in the build.

Then, make sure the CNAME file is formatted correctly.

  * The CNAME filename must be all uppercase.
  * The CNAME file can contain only one domain. To point multiple domains to your site, you must set up a redirect through your DNS provider.
  * The CNAME file must contain the domain name only. For example, `www.example.com`, `blog.example.com`, or `example.com`.
  * The domain name must be unique across all GitHub Pages sites. For example, if another repository&#39;s CNAME file contains `example.com`, you cannot use `example.com` in the CNAME file for your repository.
After you update existing DNS settings, you may need to remove and re-add your custom domain to your site&#39;s repository to trigger the process of enabling HTTPS. For more information, see Managing a custom domain for your GitHub Pages site.

If you&#39;re using Certification Authority Authorization (CAA) records, at least one CAA record must exist with the value `letsencrypt.org` for your site to be accessible over HTTPS. For more information, see Certificate Authority Authorization (CAA) in the Let&#39;s Encrypt documentation.

## URL formatting on Linux

If the URL for your site contains a username or organization name that begins or ends with a dash, or contains consecutive dashes, people browsing with Linux will receive a server error when they attempt to visit your site. To fix this, change your GitHub username to remove non-alphanumeric characters. For more information, see Username changes.

## Browser cache

If you&#39;ve recently changed or removed your custom domain and can&#39;t access the new URL in your browser, you may need to clear your browser&#39;s cache to reach the new URL. For more information on clearing your cache, see your browser&#39;s documentation.

## Domain name taken

If you&#39;re trying to use a custom domain and it says the domain is already in use, you can make the domain available for your own use by verifying it first. For more information, see …[truncated]</excerpt>

<title>Configuring a publishing source for your GitHub Pages site - GitHub Docs</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 4 days ago; If you choose the `docs` folder on any branch as your publishing source, then later remove the `/docs` folder from that branch in your repository, your site won&#39;t build and you&#39;ll get a page build error message for a missing `/docs` folder. ... However, the GitHub Pages settings will link to the workflow run that most recently deployed your site. ... A `CNAME` file in your repository file does not automatically add or remove a custom domain.
The general flow of a workflow is to:

  1. Trigger whenever there is a push to the default branch of the repository or whenever the workflow is run manually from the Actions tab.
  2. Use the `actions/checkout` action to check out the repository contents.
  3. If required by your site, build any static site files.
  4. Use the `actions/upload-pages-artifact` action to upload the static files as an artifact.
  5. If the workflow was triggered by a push to the default branch, use the `actions/deploy-pages` action to deploy the artifact. This step is skipped if the workflow was triggered by a pull request.

The workflow templates use a deployment environment called `github-pages`. If your repository does not already include an environment called `github-pages`, the environment will be created automatically. We recommend that you add a deployment protection rule so that only the default branch can deploy to this environment. For more information, see Managing environments for deployment.

Note

A `CNAME` file in your repository file does not automatically add or remove a custom domain. Instead, you must configure the custom domain through your repository settings or through the API. For more information, see Managing a custom domain for your GitHub Pages site and REST API endpoints for GitHub Pages.

Restore the Pages binding during a post-cutover rollback.

Step 5 covers validation failure before the binding is removed. It does not cover an incident after the successful cutover. Restoring DNS alone does not recreate the GitHub Pages custom-domain setting, and the retained CNAME file does not add that setting automatically.
