Copilot's review of #80, findings (4) and (5). Sam's split, relayed on #76: these two are fixed now, and (1), (2), (3) and (6) stay follow-ups (listed below). Refs #76 (it stays open).

#80 merged before these fixes (merge 23ba9ce), so this is a new PR from master e04839f, which also carries #81, #82 and #83. The change applies cleanly on top of them.

What changes

  • (4) Repeated colour-section keys are a load error.
    • json.Unmarshal keeps the last of two equal map keys, and merges or drops a repeated struct key. So a repeated port_color_map port, or a repeated matrix row or column, loaded silently.
    • LoadRegistry now runs checkColorSectionKeys right after the decode. It is a token-level pass (encoding/json Decoder.Token) over port_color_compatibility only. It checks:
      • the section key itself;
      • its port_colors, matrix and port_color_map keys, case-insensitively, the way json.Unmarshal matches struct fields;
      • every port, every matrix row, and every column of each row, matched exactly after unescaping.
    • The error names the section and the key, for example operad: port_color_compatibility.matrix["storage"]: duplicate column "storage".
    • No other key is compared. The pass tokenizes the whole document once (about 0.5 MB per load on 4.0.7, harmless) but checks only these keys. So doc-only keys keep loading, among them declared_pairs_by_wf, whose array lists the WF06 and WF08 pairs twice in 4.0.7.
  • (5) The frozen 98f2ccc test oracle is scoped. The env-gated MOOS_INTEGRATION / MOOS_T342_* checks compare with the frozen ValidateLINK only for a legacy-merge ontology or a pinned version: 4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-2.0.0 and mtdc-2.1.0, a set that never grows.

Tests

  • loader_dupkeys_t342_test.go:

    • 11 rejected repeats, among them an escaped spelling, a case variant, a later "matrix": null and a repeated section;
    • repeats outside the checked keys still load;
    • the shipped shapes pass.
  • integration_oracle_t342_test.go:

    • a self-coloured ontology that adds WF12 cites/cited-by passes with and without a matrix, while the frozen gate rejects every pair once the matrix is gone;
    • the production-only check still reports a rejected pair and a recoloured port;
    • pinned and legacy-merge ontologies keep the oracle.
  • Mutation checks: each test fails under the matching mutation:

    • drop the call: 11/11 fail;
    • never report: 5/5 fail;
    • oracle always on, or always off: the matching tests fail.
  • Review round (Z440 seat, comment 6084840483), commit fb99086: three more tests, each catching one plausible wrong version:

    • an oracle branch that never reports: 4.0.7 without a matrix must report 34 of 35 pairs;
    • an ASCII-only case fold: "port_colorſ" (ſ) repeats port_colors for json.Unmarshal;
    • case-insensitive port matching: hosts and Hosts must both load.

    Each fails on its mutant, on a scratch copy.

Gates on e04839f + this change (hp-laptop, verbatim summary)

  • gofmt -l on the 4 changed files: no output. go build ./... and go vet ./...: exit 0. go test -count=1 ./...: 9 packages ok.
  • MOOS_INTEGRATION=1, all 9 packages ok on each of:
    • 4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-2.0.0 and mtdc-2.1.0, with -skip TestIntegration_EveryNodeTypeStratumParses;
    • mtdc-2.2.0, with nothing skipped.
  • Env-gated t342 runs: all PASS.
    • Declared pairs: 4.0.7 35 · 4.0.8 43 · mtdc-2.0.0 46 · mtdc-2.1.0 47 · mtdc-2.2.0 47 (production-only).
    • Shadow replays, 0 differences each:
      • fleet log × 4.0.7: 695/622/73;
      • scratch × 4.0.8: 430/412/18;
      • scratch × mtdc-2.0.0 and × mtdc-2.1.0: 430/424/6;
      • scratch × mtdc-2.2.0: 430/424/6, counted, not compared.
  • Pre-existing on master, not caused by this change: operad: an unparseable stratum skips only the M5 rule (Refs #77) #83's TestIntegration_EveryNodeTypeStratumParses fails on 4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-2.0.0 and mtdc-2.1.0 with 5 node type(s) have no S0-S4 stratum: [event_notice= governance_proposal=S0-S2 message_packet= tool_call= tool_result=]. It passes on mtdc-2.2.0.

Neutrality (two independent runs before this PR, and once more against master)

  • Inputs: 64 ontology files: 57 ffs0 ontology.json blobs across all refs, 4.0.7, 4.0.8, and mtdc-1.0.0 to 2.2.0. All of them load.
  • 36865fb vs this change: byte-identical registries (colours, matrix, node ports, load log) and ValidateLINK verdicts over every WF × contract on/off × 137² port names, 40.8 M probes per build.
  • Master vs master + this change: byte-identical on all 64.
  • No file repeats a JSON key anywhere. The new check fires on no known file.
  • Lab kernels (36865fb vs the change, 4.0.7 × the fleet log and mtdc-2.0.0 × the scratch log) serve identical routes. Log copies were unchanged, and every lab kernel was stopped.
  • No rollout is implied. Fleet rollout R1 pins 23ba9ce and is Sam's ruling. This change enters the fleet only in a later restart.

Follow-ups — Copilot review of #80 (not in this change; Sam's split, relayed on #76, which stays open)

#76 safe order: step 1 = ontology bump carrying full κ (self-coloured), matrix kept · step 2 = kernel (#80 + this) · step 3 = second bump removing matrix.

  • (1) port_colors = exactly the eight (Copilot 4228908910). Today an absent key means the eight; 13 historical ffs0 revisions (v2.0 768e8c3, v3.0 37d07ce, 11 older .agent/ copies) have no key and would stop loading; the other 51 known inputs already list exactly the eight. Trigger: step 1 — a missing key, a missing colour or an extra name becomes a load error.
  • (2) Delete the legacy colour table (Copilot 4228908960). legacyPortColors (98f2ccc, sha256-pinned) still colours 60 of 4.0.7's 66 declared ports; without it 31 of 35 declared pairs would be rejected. Trigger: every fleet kernel loads a self-coloured ontology (step 1 rolled out) — delete the table, its pin and the legacy-merge branch; an absent port_color_map then means no colours.
  • (3) Complete matrix; disagreement is a load error (Copilot 4228909000). Today: closure of what is present plus a reportColorGate warning. Neutral on every known input (51 ship a complete 8×8; no declared pair disagrees). Trigger: step 1 — interim load errors while matrix still ships; after step 3 a present matrix is itself the load error.
  • (6) Drop matrix from GET /operad/port-colors (Copilot 4228909129). Display-only since ruling 1; the pilot never reads it, and the workbench's live import treats it as optional. Trigger: step 3 (the bump that removes matrix) — remove the key and update the route test and README.

…test oracle (t342, Copilot #80 (4)/(5))

Copilot's review of #80, findings (4) and (5). Sam's split, relayed on
#76: fix these two now; (1), (2), (3) and (6) stay follow-ups.

- (4) json.Unmarshal keeps the last of two equal map keys and merges or
  drops a repeated struct key, so a repeated port_color_map port or
  matrix row or column loaded silently. LoadRegistry now runs
  checkColorSectionKeys right after the decode: a token-level pass
  (encoding/json Decoder.Token) over port_color_compatibility only: the
  section key itself; its port_colors, matrix and port_color_map keys
  (case-insensitive, as json.Unmarshal matches struct fields); every
  port_color_map port; every matrix row and every column of each row
  (exact, after unescaping). A repeat is a load error naming the section
  and the key. Nothing else is read, so doc-only keys keep loading,
  among them declared_pairs_by_wf, whose array lists the WF06 and WF08
  pairs twice in 4.0.7. A colour listed twice inside port_colors stays
  declaredPortColors' "listed twice" error.
- (5) The env-gated MOOS_INTEGRATION / MOOS_T342_* checks compare with
  the frozen 98f2ccc ValidateLINK only for a legacy-merge ontology or a
  pinned version (4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-2.0.0, mtdc-2.1.0; the set never
  grows). Any other self-coloured ontology gets a production-only
  check: every declared pair admitted by ValidateLINK, colour source the
  ontology, served colours exactly its own port_color_map. The
  identity-matrix assertion applies to a pinned version or a shipped
  matrix; an unpinned shadow replay is counted, not compared;
  MOOS_T342_LOG_EXPECT still applies.

Tests: loader_dupkeys_t342_test.go (11 rejected repeats, among them an
escaped spelling, a case variant, a later "matrix": null and a repeated
section; repeats outside the checked keys still load; shipped shapes
pass) and integration_oracle_t342_test.go (a self-coloured ontology
adding WF12 cites/cited-by passes with and without a matrix, while the
frozen gate rejects every pair once the matrix is gone; the
production-only check still reports a rejected pair and a recoloured
port; pinned and legacy-merge ontologies keep the oracle). Each fails
under the matching mutation.

Neutral: all 64 known ontology inputs (57 ffs0 ontology.json blobs,
4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-1.0.0 to 2.2.0) load; 36865fb and this change give
byte-identical registries and ValidateLINK verdicts over every WF x
contract x 137^2 port names (40.8M probes per build); none repeats a
JSON key anywhere. Shadow replays unchanged (695/622/73 on 4.0.7;
430/412/18 on 4.0.8; 430/424/6 on mtdc-2.0.0 and 2.1.0); lab kernels
serve identical routes. No rollout implied; the operad rollout stays
Sam's ruling.

Refs #76 (findings (1), (2), (3) and (6) are follow-ups; #76 stays open).

t342 · Z440 seat · review of #84 (be5c03a on e04839f). Verdict: correct and neutral on all real data. Three optional test additions.

Three lenses (spec, neutrality on real data, code with mutation tests), every finding re-checked by a skeptic. Both trees were exported by explicit SHA to C:, deleted afterwards.

Verified

Copilot (4) and (5) on #80 are resolved as worded. Only loader.go and three test files change, so (1), (2), (3) and (6) are untouched.

Neutral on real data

  • 82 files: every ontology and moos-mtdc blob across all refs of ffs0 and mtdc-lab, plus the working copies. That includes ffs0#221's 4.0.9 (550fd00), which is not in the PR's 64 inputs.
    • Master and the PR load byte-identical registries: colours, matrix, colour source, ports, drift and the load log.
    • They give byte-identical ValidateLINK verdicts, over about 600k probes per file and on every declared pair.
    • checkColorSectionKeys rejects no real file. No file repeats a key at any depth, exact or case-folded.
  • One historical blob fails on both trees, mtdc-lab 09aface58b (operad/moos-mtdc-1.0.0.json): WF01 primary pair (owns, child): src_types is empty. That error comes from operad: * in type lists matches any type (Refs #79) #82's list check, not this PR. "Every input loads" holds for the PR's 64 inputs, not for the full history.
  • Shadow replays on Z440's logs: 5 logs × 6 ontologies, all pass, 0 differences wherever the oracle runs. The counts differ from the PR body's because the logs differ: fleet × 4.0.7 is 251/233/18 here.

Key matching mirrors encoding/json exactly. A differential fuzz against json.Unmarshal as the key matcher ran 300,000 generated documents, 74,287 of them with repeats, with 0 mismatches. That covers:

  • case variants and the ſ (U+017F) and Kelvin folds;
  • \u escapes and \/;
  • lone surrogates and invalid UTF-8;
  • null, array and absent sections, and a repeated top-level section.

It also holds under GOEXPERIMENT=jsonv2. The check runs after Unmarshal, so a decode error is still reported first.

Oracle scoping

  • 4.0.7, 4.0.8, mtdc-2.0.0 and mtdc-2.1.0 keep the oracle. mtdc-2.2.0 and 4.0.9 take the production-only check.
  • For 4.0.9 the oracle on master also passes (35/35, 0 differences), so the scoping loses nothing there.
  • Production-only is the right path for a self-coloured file that keeps the matrix. Its only possible disagreement with the oracle is where reportColorGate warns, and the fleet test already fails on that.

Mutations killed (12):

  • drop the call (11/11);
  • case-sensitive top-level or section keys;
  • no repeated-section check;
  • no in-section check;
  • matrix or columns not checked;
  • oracle always on or never on;
  • pinned versions only, or legacy-merge only;
  • mtdc-2.0.0 removed from the pinned set.

gofmt, go vet and go test ./... are clean; 9 packages pass.

Low: test additions (each lets a mutant survive today)

  1. The oracle branch of declaredPairProblems (t342_integration_test.go:140) can be switched off with no test failing. Every hermetic oracle case expects zero problems.
    • Fix: add a case with tableOntology("4.0.7", pairs407, overrides407, nil) (no matrix). It must produce problems. Measured: 34 of 35 pairs are rejected by 98f2ccc, and this fails under the mutant.
  2. Unicode case folding of section keys is untested. An ASCII-only fold passes the suite.
    • Fix: add a rejected case {"port_colors": [...], "port_colorſ": [...]}. It expects duplicate key "port_colorſ", the same key as port_colors.
  3. Exact matching of port, row and column keys is untested. Comparing them case-insensitively passes the suite.
    • Fix: add a must-load body {"port_color_map": {"hosts": "topology", "Hosts": "auth"}}. JSON keeps both keys, and it fails under the mutant.

Notes (not defects)

  • The PR body says "Nothing else is read". The check does scan the whole document; that is needed to catch a repeated top-level section. It also copies every top-level value into a RawMessage: 0.52 MB per load against 0.18 MB for Unmarshal on 4.0.7. That has no practical effect at about 200 KB.
  • Changes to the pinned oracle set (removing mtdc-2.1.0, adding versions) are not detected by a test. That is acceptable for a "never grows" set, but worth a comment.

Merge-ready from the Z440 side, with or without the three tests. #76 stays open.

…e oracle (review of #84)

From the Z440 seat's review of #84: three plausible wrong versions of the
code still passed the suite. Each new test fails on exactly one of them
(checked on a scratch copy, then discarded):

- OracleBranchHasTeeth: under the frozen 98f2ccc oracle, 4.0.7 without
  its matrix must report 34 of its 35 declared pairs (the frozen gate
  rejects every pair with coloured ends; production admits them). Killed
  mutant: an oracle branch that never reports.
- A repeated section key in a Unicode case fold ("port_colorſ" after
  "port_colors"): json.Unmarshal reads both as port_colors, so the check
  must reject it. Killed mutant: an ASCII-only case fold.
- PortNamesAreExact: "hosts" and "Hosts" are two ports and must load.
  Killed mutant: comparing ports case-insensitively.

gofmt clean; go vet and go test ./... pass.

Thanks for the review (6084840483). Your three optional tests are in, as fb99086, new commits only:

  • TestIntegrationOracle_OracleBranchHasTeeth_t342: under the 98f2ccc oracle, 4.0.7 without its matrix reports 34 of 35 declared pairs (the frozen gate rejects; production admits).
  • A Unicode-fold repeat: "port_colorſ" (ſ) after "port_colors" is now a rejected case in TestLoadRegistry_ColorSectionDuplicateKeys_Rejected_t342.
  • TestLoadRegistry_PortNamesAreExact_t342: hosts and Hosts both load, with their own colours.

Mutation check (on a scratch copy of the full tree, then discarded; the baseline passes):

mutant killed by
the oracle branch never reports OracleBranchHasTeeth
strings.ToLower(key) == loaded instead of EqualFold the ſ subtest
ports compared via strings.ToLower PortNamesAreExact

Then gofmt (on LF bytes), go vet ./... and go test -count=1 ./... pass.

Body: "Nothing else is read" now reads "no other key is compared". The pass tokenizes the whole document once.
