Important
Despite the title, this PR does not remediate any finding — it adds a vendor-generated report, and 23 of its 24 "HIGH" findings do not hold up against the code at b76ac1a (all 20 XSS, both path-traversal, and the SSRF entries are false positives; the two root-user items are arguable hardening at best). It also opens a public security report, which SECURITY.md explicitly asks people not to do. Recommend closing this and routing anything believed real through private vulnerability reporting.
Reviewed changes — reviewed the single added file against the code and contracts it cites, at base b76ac1a.
.security/blackshield-audit-report.md(new) — a third-party scanner's list of 24 "HIGH" findings with generic remediation text, plus a persistent link to a commercial product.- No source remediation —
changed_filesis 1; the workflow file the PR body says is included (.github/workflows/blackshield-security.yml) is absent.
⚠️ The title and body describe work the diff does not contain
The repo would gain a report, not a fix, so merging leaves every claimed HIGH in place while the history says they were remediated. The body's "What's Included in This PR" lists a .github/workflows/blackshield-security.yml that is not in the diff either, so anyone reading the description would expect protections that do not exist.
Technical details
# Title/body do not match the diff
## Affected sites
- `.security/blackshield-audit-report.md:1` — "remediate 24 high-priority security finding(s)"
- PR body, "What's Included in This PR" item 2 — `.github/workflows/blackshield-security.yml`
## Required outcome
- The title should describe what the diff does (e.g. "docs: add BlackShield scan report"), or the remediation should actually be included.
- Either include the workflow file or drop it from the description.
## Open questions for the human
- Was the workflow meant to be part of this branch? It is not present at `f7de34d`.⚠️ Public security PR contradicts SECURITY.md
SECURITY.md says: "Please do not open a public issue, a pull request, or a discussion for a security report. A public issue is a disclosure..." This PR publishes a vulnerability list to a public thread. That these particular findings are false positives is lucky, not a reason the pattern is acceptable.
Technical details
# Route security reports privately
## Affected sites
- `SECURITY.md:21-23` — public PRs/issues for security reports are explicitly prohibited
- PR #212 — public thread titled as a security remediation
## Required outcome
- The report should not land as a public PR.
- If a maintainer believes a finding is real, it belongs in GitHub private vulnerability reporting (Security tab), per the policy.ℹ️ Third-party vendor content and an unvetted CI image
The file exists mainly to advertise blackshield.chaplau.com, and the body's suggested workflow would run public.ecr.aws/blackshield-security/pipeline-scanner:1.0.18 on every PR — a third-party image pinned by mutable tag only, executing with the repo mounted. That is a supply-chain decision the maintainers should make deliberately, not inherit from a generated PR.
Technical details
# Third-party image in CI
## Affected sites
- `.security/blackshield-audit-report.md:5` — marketing link embedded in the report
- PR body workflow snippet — `public.ecr.aws/blackshield-security/pipeline-scanner:1.0.18`
## Required outcome
- Any CI adoption pins the image by digest and is reviewed as its own change.
- Prefer the repo's existing `audit.yml`/scanning path if the goal is coverage.deepseek-v4.1-flash | 𝕏

There was a problem hiding this comment.
False positive: frontend/embed.go:19 is the http.HandlerFunc line of FaviconHandler; the only path it opens is the compile-time constant build/favicon.svg from embed.FS. The SPA handler does open r.URL.Path, but from an embedded read-only FS, so there is no route to an arbitrary file.
Technical details
# `sec-path-traversal` at frontend/embed.go:19
## Affected sites
- `frontend/embed.go:19` — `http.HandlerFunc(func(w, r) {...})`, no path construction
- `frontend/embed.go:20` — `buildFS.Open("build/favicon.svg")` — constant
- `frontend/embed.go:48` — `h.fs.Open(r.URL.Path)` served by `http.FS(sub)` over `embed.FS`
## Required outcome
- Drop this finding from the report, or restate it as the (non-issue) observation that the SPA handler relies on `embed.FS` confinement.| ### 3. [HIGH] `sec-xss-raw-html` — sec-xss-raw-html: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via Unsanitized HTML

All 20 sec-xss-raw-html entries share this problem and none is exploitable. Six cite lines that are not sinks at all — embed.js:214,237,701 and manage.html:443,471 are innerHTML = '' clears, and manage.html:549 is an event-handler line. Every remaining interpolation is an esc()-wrapped value, an Intl-formatted date/time/number, or a key from the compiled locales/*.json table; e.g. host names at book.html:341 pass through faceHTML's esc(), and the only admin-authored string reaching el({html}) is q.label, wrapped at embed.js:612.
Technical details
# `sec-xss-raw-html` cluster (20 findings)
## Affected sites
- `internal/handler/embed.js:214,237,701` — `this.wrap.innerHTML = ''`, no interpolation
- `internal/handler/templates/manage.html:443,471` — `list.innerHTML = ''`, no interpolation
- `internal/handler/templates/manage.html:549` — `$('reschedule-btn').addEventListener(...)`, not an HTML write
- `internal/handler/templates/book.html:341` — `faceHTML` escapes `avatar_url` and `name`
- `internal/handler/templates/book.html:348` — `defaultFacesHTML` captured from Go-escaped markup
- `book.html:524`, `manage.html:403` — calendar markup from numeric date parts and `Intl` day labels
- `book.html:581/596/627/638`, `manage.html:487/512/524/554` — `esc()`-wrapped or translation-table values
- `internal/handler/embed.js:87` — generic `el()` `html:` branch; call sites use `esc()`/`t()`/SVG constants
## Required outcome
- Drop these findings. If the scanner is to be used, its DOM-XSS rule needs taint tracking, not `innerHTML` token matching.
## Open questions for the human
- Are you relying on this report to prioritize work? These 20 entries would consume effort with no security gain.| ### 22. [HIGH] `sec-path-traversal` — sec-path-traversal: Path Traversal / Arbitrary File Access

False positive: internal/i18n/i18n.go:56 reads "locales/" + e.Name(), where e.Name() comes from localeFS.ReadDir("locales") during init(). Both the directory and the files are compile-time embedded entries; no request value reaches the path.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
False positive: packaging/ns8/assert-multiarc.py:130 builds its URL from the module constant REGISTRY = "https://ghcr.io" plus a repository passed on the command line to a release-check script, and normalize_repo strips any supplied host. There is no user-controlled request path here, let alone one that could target internal addresses.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Not actionable as written: NS8 module containers run under the platform's contract, and this image's ENTRYPOINT is ./container-entrypoint.sh, which sets up the module environment. Switching to a non-root USER is a change to the NS8 packaging contract, not a one-line Containerfile edit, and should be verified against that contract before being listed as HIGH.

This is the one finding with a real basis, but the recommended fix is incomplete: entrypoint.sh does mkdir -p /data at runtime and the process writes $DATABASE_URL=sqlite:///data/calnode.db, so adding USER without chowning /data makes the container fail to start. Worth tracking as an issue against the Dockerfile with that constraint in hand.
Technical details
# Run the app container as non-root
## Affected sites
- `Dockerfile:74-92` — final alpine stage, no `USER`, `ENTRYPOINT ["/entrypoint.sh"]`
- `entrypoint.sh:4` — `mkdir -p /data`
- `entrypoint.sh:11,20` — Litestream restores into and replicates `/data/calnode.db`
- `litestream.yml` — path must stay writable by the runtime user
## Required outcome
- A non-root runtime user that can read/write `/data` (and the Litestream config), with the entrypoint still able to create `/data` when the volume is absent.
## Suggested approach (optional)
- Create a system user in the runtime stage, `chown /data` and any created paths at entrypoint start (running as root briefly, then `exec` under the user via `su-exec`/`gosu`), or document that the platform must mount the volume with the target uid/gid.|
Closing this. It is an unsolicited promotional PR: a scanner report plus an offer to run "in every PR for you". We do not host vendor placements or marketing artifacts in the repository, and a file appearing under If you have specific findings, open a normal issue with the affected code, a reproduction, and the impact. We will look at it on its merits. This is a policy that applies to everyone, not a judgement on the scanner. |
