vainfo says iHD_drv_video.so init failed on Fedora

I'm on Fedora, and vainfo says that "iHD_drv_video.so init failed". Looking at strace it says "resource temporarily unavailable" when it's trying to connect to wayland-0 and polling messages return this "resource temporarily unavailable" from the compositor and renderD128 device.

What's your CPU and Fedora version? I am i5-7200u and Fedora 42.

You may enable RPM Fusion repo:

Maybe should switch to Proprietary device driver

sudo dnf install libva-utils

sudo dnf remove libva-intel-media-driver

sudo dnf install intel-media-driver

If you want to watch video:

sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing

I'm on i7-4700MQ and Fedora 40. But I tried it with the latest vainfo version from Fedora 42 repo, still erroring out.

The thing is, I think I have the hardware decoded acceleration actually working because my videos are smooth and because when I block the vaapi libraries I get jittery video playback. But for some reason it's not detected by vainfo, and my applications think I don't have the hardware decode (and report it as unsupported).

It seems that you should use libva-intel-driver (provides i965_drv_video.so, 4th Gen & older) instead of intel-media-driver (iHD_drv_video.so, 5th Gen & newer).

Your CPU is i7-4700MQ, so maybe iHD_drv_video.so is NOT suitable ?

i7-4700MQ is Haswell, not in the above list

if KMD is i915 (intel card), then it will try to open iHD, if it failed, then will try to open i965. so if there are only one message that tell you iHD init failed, please check whether i965 also init failed.

Yes, there are two failures...but the iHD failure has "resource temporarily unavailable".
