PSDK-235: the Staging tests workflow ran on any '/test-staging' PR comment without checking the commenter, checked out the PR head (including forks) and executed it with PYTHON_SDK_STG_API_KEY on self-hosted runners. Any GitHub user could open a fork PR and run arbitrary code with the staging key inside our runner infrastructure.

  • Before checkout, verify via the collaborator permission API that the commenter has write/maintain/admin access. author_association is not used because private org members appear as CONTRIBUTOR.
  • Refuse PRs whose head is in a fork. Otherwise an outsider could push new commits after a maintainer comments and get them executed; in-repo branches can only be pushed by users with write access.
  • Only react to comments on open PRs.
  • Default-deny workflow permissions (job gets contents/pull-requests read) and stop persisting the checkout token.
  • Pass workflow_dispatch inputs through env instead of interpolating them into the shell script to prevent script injection.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Added safeguards to staging test runs: only authorized contributors can trigger them, and runs are limited to open pull requests from the current repository. Tests now use the pull request’s latest commit, with more restricted workflow access.

Walkthrough

The staging workflow limits job permissions, adds checks for issue-comment runs, checks out an authorized pull request SHA without persisted credentials, and passes test environment and filter values through environment variables.

Changes: Staging workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow permissions and run conditions
.github/workflows/staging-tests.yaml
The workflow sets default-deny permissions and grants the job contents: read and pull-requests: read. Issue-comment runs require an open pull request.
Pull request checkout and test inputs
.github/workflows/staging-tests.yaml
For issue-comment runs, the workflow checks the commenter’s repository permission and the pull request head repository. It uses the pull request SHA for checkout and disables persisted credentials. Test environment and filter inputs pass through environment variables and are quoted in the test command.

The change closes the fork-code hole on the /test-staging comment trigger. The label trigger can still run fork pull request code on the self-hosted runner. Dispatch filters can also inject shell commands through the Make recipe, though only for users who already have write access. Reject fork heads on the label path before merging, and tighten the Make quoting as a follow-up.

Protect the self-hosted runner from fork code on the labeled path.

Adding test-staging is an authorization signal, but it is not a head-repository check or proof of runner isolation. The labeled path checks out the fork head and runs it on infra1-runners-arc/runners-small. Fork pull-request runs do not receive repository secrets, so this path does not establish PYTHON_SDK_STG_API_KEY exposure, but it still executes untrusted code on self-hosted infrastructure. Reject fork heads on this path, or route labeled fork requests to a runner isolated from trusted infrastructure.

Keep dispatch inputs out of Make recipe syntax.

project_common.mk still allows a filter such as foo; id to execute id as a separate shell command. Pass the test filter through its own environment variable and quote it at the final recipe boundary instead of embedding it in ADD_ARGS. This is a real command-injection defect, but it is not a major privilege-escalation issue because workflow_dispatch already requires write access and the authorized writer can run controlled branch contents.
