# Papyrus documentation
-Sphinx publishes the product requirements, current architecture, and API reference.
-Requirements describe intended capabilities; the implementation chapters describe
-current behavior.
Sphinx publishes a user manual and technical specification. Requirements describe
intended capabilities, while implementation notes describe current behavior.
The [Papyrus GitHub Project](https://github.com/orgs/PapyrusReader/projects/1)
tracks requirements and tasks across the component repositories.

## Setup and preview
@@ -15,7 +18,53 @@ make serve
Preview at . `make build` produces `_build/html/` and treats
Sphinx warnings as failures. `make lint` additionally checks external links.
-The Deploy workflow builds with the same lock and publishes GitHub Pages on master.
Feature/fix PRs target the default `development` branch. CI checks PRs and
integration pushes without publishing. When ready, promote `development` to
`master` with a release PR using **Create a merge commit**, then bring `master`
back into `development`. The Deploy workflow builds with the same lock and
publishes GitHub Pages only from `master`, including manual runs. Keep both
long-lived branches and do not squash release promotions.

## Hosting and custom domain

GitHub Pages hosts the documentation independently of the application server.
In this repository's **Settings → Pages**, use **GitHub Actions** as the build
source and set the custom domain to `docs.papyrus-reader.com`.
The DNS record is:

| Type | Name | Target |
| --- | --- | --- |
| CNAME | `docs` | `papyrusreader.github.io` |

Use DNS-only routing while GitHub validates the domain and issues its TLS
certificate, then enable **Enforce HTTPS** in Pages settings. The CNAME target
must not include `/docs` or a URL scheme. Actions deployments use the custom
domain from Pages settings, not a repository `CNAME` file. `html_baseurl` in
`conf.py` sets canonical page URLs to the same HTTPS domain.

After a production deployment, check the homepage, a nested manual page, and
their styles and navigation at the custom domain. DNS and certificate issuance
must finish before HTTPS can be verified.

## Requirements and local agents

Run `make requirements` to validate and export the structured requirements and
tasks, and `make test` to test the synchronization and task eligibility rules.
CI also performs these checks and uploads the generated JSON as an artifact.

With GitHub CLI authenticated for repository and Projects access:

```bash
make project-plan
make project-sync
uv run --locked python scripts/work_issue.py https://github.com/PapyrusReader/docs/issues/NUMBER --launch
```

Synchronization requires committed, pushed documentation. It preserves discussion
outside the managed issue section and does not automatically close requirements.
Local launches claim only Ready tasks with completed dependencies and prepare an
isolated checkout. See [the workflow](implementation/github-workflow.rst) for field
ownership, changed specifications, claim recovery, and PR completion.

It provides endpoints for:\n\n- **Authentication**: User registration, login, OAuth, and session management\n- **Books**: CRUD operations for book metadata and file references\n- **Organization**: Shelves, tags, and series management\n- **Annotations**: Highlights, notes, and bookmarks\n- **Progress**: Reading sessions and statistics\n- **Goals**: Reading goal tracking\n- **Sync**: Cross-device synchronization\n- **Storage**: File storage backend configuration\n- **Files**: File upload/download (when server is file backend)\n\n## Authentication\n\nMost endpoints require authentication via JWT Bearer token. Obtain tokens\nthrough the `/v1/auth/register`, `/v1/auth/login`, or the\nbrowser-based `/v1/auth/oauth/google/start` flow.\n\n```\nAuthorization: Bearer \n```\n\nAccess tokens expire after `60` minutes.\nUse the refresh token to obtain new access tokens via `/v1/auth/refresh`.\n\n## Rate Limiting\n\nSync and file-upload limits are enforced per authenticated user, across sessions.\nAuthentication and OPDS relay limits are enforced per client IP. Limits are configurable:\n\n| Endpoint Category | Limit |\n|-------------------|-------|\n| Authentication | 5 requests/minute |\n| OPDS relay | 100 requests/minute |\n| File uploads | 60 requests/minute |\n| Sync transactions | 300 requests/minute |\n",

It provides endpoints for:\n\n- **Authentication**: User registration, login, OAuth, and session management\n- **Books**: CRUD operations for book metadata and file references\n- **Organization**: Shelves, tags, and series management\n- **Annotations**: Highlights, notes, and bookmarks\n- **Progress**: Reading sessions and statistics\n- **Goals**: Reading goal tracking\n- **Sync**: Cross-device synchronization\n- **Storage**: File storage backend configuration\n- **Files**: File upload/download (when server is file backend)\n\n## Authentication\n\nMost endpoints require authentication via JWT Bearer token. Obtain tokens\nthrough the `/v1/auth/register`, `/v1/auth/login`, or the\nbrowser-based `/v1/auth/oauth/google/start` flow.\n\n```\nAuthorization: Bearer \n```\n\nAccess tokens expire after `60` minutes.\nUse the refresh token to obtain new access tokens via `/v1/auth/refresh`.\n\n## Rate Limiting\n\nRate limits are enforced per user:\n\n| Endpoint Category | Limit |\n|-------------------|-------|\n| Authentication | 5 requests/minute |\n| General API | 100 requests/minute |\n| File uploads | 10 requests/minute |\n| Batch operations | 20 requests/minute |\n",

Database model
==============
This diagram is the target domain model, not a generated representation of the

@@ -30,3 +30,76 @@ provider adapters are product goals and should not be inferred from stored
storage-profile configuration. The requirement and entity diagrams elsewhere in
this documentation describe target behavior; consult the server models and Alembic
revisions for the deployed schema.

Synchronization policy
----------------------

The target conflict policy is specified in :need:`NFR-2_3`. The Papyrus API
decides which writes to accept. PowerSync carries queued uploads and replicates
the committed result. Client timestamps are not a global ordering mechanism.

The current library mutation handler discards client-supplied ``updated_at``,
applies supplied fields, and assigns a server update time. Tombstones protect
deleted entities. JSON payloads are not recursively merged. Owner serialization,
atomic batches, and history validation remain part of the server contract.
These mechanisms need acceptance coverage across the full set of mutable fields
before the whole requirement can be marked verified.

See `PowerSync conflict handling
`_.

Guest and account boundaries
----------------------------

Guest libraries remain separate from account libraries. Registration and sign-in
switch the active library without transferring guest data. Server profiles and
users also have separate database and media scopes. Becoming connected does not
turn a guest library into a synchronized account library.

Profile photos
--------------

``POST /v1/users/me/avatar`` accepts a multipart JPEG/PNG ``file`` and
``display_name``. The server bounds each photo to 5 MiB, checks its image
signature, serializes writes on the owner row, and commits the photo reference
and name together. Photos use a separate fixed allowance from library storage.
The client resizes photos to at most 512 pixels on the longest side and removes
source metadata before uploading.

The existing ``avatar_url`` field stores an API-prefix-relative reference such
as ``/users/me/avatar/{uuid}``. Fetching it requires the owner's access token
against the configured server. External provider photo URLs remain supported,
but are fetched without Papyrus credentials. Downloads are private and marked
``no-store``. Replacing a photo removes the previous file after commit, and
permanent account deletion removes the entire owner media directory, including
photos. Failed writes retain the previous reference and file. This increment
does not change database schemas or PowerSync projections. Deploy the updated
server before clients that offer photo uploads.

Account deletion and recovery
-----------------------------

In-app deletion uses the current authenticated session. Public deletion requests
and sign-in to an account awaiting deletion use a short-lived, single-use
credential. Scheduling revokes existing sessions. Explicit recovery cancels the
request and issues fresh tokens in one transaction, without another sign-in.
Email notices are queued in the account transaction and delivered asynchronously
with retries. Notices are retained and delivered in event order for each account,
then removed after delivery, seven days, or permanent account deletion.
See :need:`FR-1_6` for the policy and :doc:`/manual/index` for the user flow.

After the 30-day recovery window, a worker deletes account-owned records and
queues physical media cleanup in the same database transaction. Cleanup runs at
startup and every 60 seconds. Durable jobs survive restarts and retry storage
failures, with row locks coordinating multiple workers. Local device libraries
and external provider files remain outside this cleanup. Previously issued
PowerSync tokens remain usable until expiry and cannot be renewed.

Planned contracts
-----------------

Email verification before sign-in, recoverable account deletion followed by
permanent cleanup, and full-library content search are requirements with remaining
implementation work. They are not capabilities established by the architecture
diagram above. Additional storage providers remain committed targets, but
automatic failover is outside scope.

Accessibility foundation audit
==============================

Scope and standard
------------------

This increment targets `WCAG 2.2 Level AA `_,
with `WCAG2ICT `_ guidance for native software.
WCAG2ICT interprets WCAG for non-web documents and software. It is not a separate
conformance certification. Requirement :need:`NFR-5_2` remains open.

The scope is client authentication, primary navigation, library search and
selection, book details/editing, file import, Settings, and the shared controls,
menus, dialogs, and sheets those journeys use. Passing the checks below is not
full-app conformance. Reader-engine remediation, EPUB/PDF content, read-aloud,
reading guides, and broader pages such as goals, statistics, and online catalogs
are outside this increment's audit.

Implementation contract
-----------------------

``PreferencesProvider`` stores device-wide interface enlargement, increased
contrast, and bold text alongside the existing font and motion settings.
Unsupported saved enlargement values fall back to System default. No server
schema, synchronization payload, or database migration changes are involved.

``AppAccessibilityScope`` retains the system text scaler and bold-text flag before
applying overrides. Enlargement multiplies each result of the original scaler,
rather than replacing its nonlinear curve with a linear estimate. System bold
text and reduced motion cannot be disabled by an app preference. Light and dark
high-contrast themes use Material's maximum contrast setting and build component
themes from that palette. E-ink retains its separate palette and motion policy.
OpenDyslexic is bundled with its license and applies to all theme variants.

``ReaderSystemTextScope`` restores system text metrics and bold text around the
embedded reader and reader panels. Reader preferences, book rendering settings,
and stored locators are unchanged. Tests of the adapter boundary do not evaluate
the accessibility of book content.

Audit matrix
------------

Results refer to local verification on 24 October 2026. **Automated** means the
specified regression scenario passes, not that every instance of the criterion
has been evaluated. **Pending** means acceptance evidence is still required.
Test paths below are relative to ``client/app/test``.

.. list-table:: Criteria, scenarios, and evidence
 :header-rows: 1
 :widths: 19 28 35 18

 * - Criteria
 - Scenario and remediation
 - Evidence
 - Result / limit
 * - 1.3.1, 4.1.2: information, relationships, names, roles, states
 - Settings toggles expose one labeled state and one action, including
disabled state. Picker choices expose radio selection. Search and icon actions
have names. Decorative covers do not duplicate book titles.
 - ``themes/app_accessibility_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/profile/accessibility_settings_section_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/accessibility_journeys_test.dart``.
 - Automated for sampled controls. Native announcements pending.
 * - 1.3.2, 2.4.3: reading and focus order
 - Nested page navigators must not remove the primary navigation from the
accessibility tree. The shell provides a semantics boundary. Settings pickers use the root
modal layer so background navigation is hidden until dismissal.
 - ``widgets/shell/navigation_counts_test.dart`` checks mobile and desktop
navigation remains exposed. Chrome accessibility-tree inspection found
the original defect and verified navigation after remediation. The
regression also checks picker selection and restoration of focus.
 - Automated regression. Complete native reading-order review pending.
 * - 1.4.3, 1.4.11: contrast
 - Normal, dark, e-ink, and high-contrast palettes. Auth errors pair error
background with on-error foreground. Divider labels use readable text
color. Cover overlays retain their original translucent styling.
 - Flutter text-contrast guideline checks for shared settings toggles,
book actions, and search in all five themes.
 - Automated sample. Image content and every color/state combination are
 not certified by these checks.
 * - 1.4.4, 1.4.10: text enlargement and reflow
 - Settings and auth at 320, 390, and 1280 logical pixels. System 200%
combined with app +100% retains 400% effective enlargement. Keyboard
inset does not hide auth submission. Navigation labels remain scalable.
 - ``widgets/accessibility_journeys_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/profile/accessibility_settings_section_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/accessibility_library_journeys_test.dart``.
 - Automated scenarios. Device font rendering and browser zoom still
 require platform acceptance.
 * - 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.4.7, 2.4.11: keyboard and focus
 - Whole-row toggle activation, keyboard activation, reduced-motion focus
retention, explicit library action menus, keyboard-operable star ratings,
 and dialog dismissal.
 - ``themes/app_accessibility_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/app_motion_control_test.dart``,
 ``themes/eink_input_focus_test.dart``. Chrome keyboard inspection checks
dialog Escape dismissal and focus restoration.
 - Automated shared controls and sampled browser behavior. Exhaustive
focus visibility/containment across native dialogs pending.
 * - 2.5.1, 2.5.7: alternatives to gestures and dragging
 - Desktop card actions appear on hover or keyboard focus and retain
programmatic labels. Compact cover overlays retain the original design.
File import offers Browse files alongside desktop drop. Sheets retain
 explicit actions and dismiss behavior.
 - ``widgets/library/book_card_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/library/book_list_item_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/add_book/book_import_sheet_test.dart``.
 - Automated sampled actions. Touch card gesture alternatives and
compact overlay target sizing remain gaps. No reader gesture audit.
 * - 2.5.8: target size
 - Standalone touch controls use at least 48 logical-pixel hit areas even
when artwork is smaller. This product target is stricter than WCAG AA's
24 CSS-pixel minimum, which has defined spacing and other exceptions.
 - Flutter Android (48) and iOS (44) tap-target guidelines on sampled
settings, search, and book detail action controls. Compact cover
overlays retain their original 30-pixel targets and are an exception
to the product target, not covered by those guideline checks.
 - Automated sample. Flutter logical pixels and CSS pixels/points are
 platform-specific units, not a universal physical-size equivalence.
 * - 1.4.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 4.1.3: errors and status
 - Invalid auth input has text errors and retains focus/input. Import
failures have a live region. Selection has checked/selected state.
Completion snackbars use Flutter's live-region semantics. Progress
 updates are not individually announced.
 - Auth validation tests, import state tests, existing completion/error
 paths, and settings semantics tests.
 - Automated behavior and code inspection. Actual announcement timing
 with VoiceOver/TalkBack pending.
 * - 3.3.8: accessible authentication
 - Login permits password paste and provides email/password autofill hints.
Registration/recovery provide new-password hints. Visibility buttons
are named Show password / Hide password.
 - ``widgets/accessibility_journeys_test.dart`` exercises paste and
 visibility and inspects autofill hints.
 - Automated. External password-manager integration pending.
 * - System preferences and reader isolation
 - Live system/app changes, nonlinear scaling, storage reload, malformed
preferences, fonts, contrast, bold text, reduced motion, and reader
 boundary behavior.
 - ``providers/accessibility_preferences_test.dart``,
 ``themes/app_accessibility_test.dart``,
 ``widgets/profile/accessibility_settings_section_test.dart``, existing
 reader adapter and persistence tests.
 - Automated. No reader-package or stored-position schema change.

Platform acceptance
-------------------

Chrome on macOS was used to inspect the actual Flutter web accessibility tree,
verify exposed primary navigation and filter-button roles, activate Settings
controls, preview +100% text enlargement and OpenDyslexic, confirm preferences
survive reload, and verify that the font picker hides background navigation
and exposes radio choices. Escape dismissal and restoration of focus were checked
from a confirmation dialog. Accessibility-tree inspection is not equivalent to
listening to a screen reader.

The following remain pending and must not be reported as passed:

- VoiceOver on macOS/iOS: navigate representative auth, library, details/edit,
import, and Settings journeys. Check order, single announcements, live-region
timing, rotor access, and restoration after dialogs and sheets.
- TalkBack on Android: repeat those journeys with system large text, bold text,
high contrast where available, and reduced motion. No Android target was
available in the local device inventory for this increment.
- Native keyboard traversal and external password-manager acceptance on each
supported platform. Confirm focus is visible and not obscured at every step.
- Broader app pages and EPUB/PDF content accessibility, including document
structure, alternative text, reading order, and reader-engine interactions.

Local validation results
------------------------

- Full client suite: 1,927 passed, 19 skipped. The skipped tests are not counted
 as accessibility acceptance evidence.
- Client quality checks: formatting, analysis, and four web bootstrap tests.
- Chrome regressions verify saved guest avatars decode after browser-storage
reload, Settings scrolling works over empty space, and short desktop sections
remain aligned at the top. Account form checks cover 320, 390, and 1280 logical
pixels at normal and 200% text size.
- Release web compilation: passed, including Flutter's Wasm dry-run check.
- Documentation: warning-as-error Sphinx build passed.
- Chrome inspection: primary navigation and Settings controls exposed, live
enlargement observed, and a confirmation dialog dismissed with Escape with
focus restored. VoiceOver and TalkBack are not included in these results.

Reproduction
------------

Run focused preference, theme, and journey tests, followed by the full client
suite and ``tools/papyrus check client``. Build the web client with the pinned
Flutter SDK and local dart defines. Build this documentation with ``make build``
from ``docs``. Validation used the workspace's existing local reader path override, which was
preserved. Remote CI was not run. Test success, compilation, browser inspection,
and assistive technology acceptance are separate forms of evidence.

The `Papyrus project `_ collects
requirements and implementation work across the organization.

Ownership
---------

The documentation is authoritative for product requirements and acceptance
criteria. Requirement tracking issues live in ``PapyrusReader/docs``.
Implementation task issues belong to the repository that owns the change.
Project status describes work execution, while requirement status describes
implemented and verified product behavior.

 - Workspace tooling and cross-component integration
 * - observability
 - Shared HTTPS proxy, production metrics, logs, dashboards, and alerts

A requirement may have several tasks. Use cases provide context and are not
automatically converted into duplicate tasks.

Defining executable work
-------------------------

Write ``task`` entries alongside the relevant requirements. Each task needs a
stable ``TASK-AREA-NN`` ID, one owning ``component``, ``priority``, ``readiness``,
``implements`` links, validation instructions, scope, and acceptance criteria.
Use ``depends_on`` for prerequisite tasks.

Keep each task small enough for an independently reviewable pull request. Split
cross-component work into tasks with an agreed contract and explicit dependency
order. When a contract is undecided, create a documentation/design task first.
Keep unresolved implementation tasks out of the Ready queue.

The exporter rejects missing fields, invalid requirement references, invalid task
dependencies, and cycles. The initial authentication tasks demonstrate the format
in :doc:`/requirements/functional`.

Export and synchronize
----------------------

From the docs repository:

.. code-block:: bash

 make requirements
 make test
 make project-plan
 make project-sync

``project-plan`` reads GitHub and previews issue creation and updates.
``project-sync`` writes them and requires a clean, committed docs checkout.
Push the specification commit before synchronization so its source links can be
opened on GitHub.

The commands use ``gh`` authentication with repository and Projects access:

.. code-block:: bash

 gh auth refresh -h github.com -s project

``github-project.json`` identifies the organization, project, and allowed
repositories. CI validates the export and uploads JSON as a build artifact.
Generated JSON stays in ``_build`` and is not committed. Synchronization is run
locally on demand, with no hosted agent or personal token stored in CI.
Run one synchronization at a time across all machines. The command detects
existing duplicate IDs, but issue creation is not a cross-machine lock.

Stable IDs embedded in issues prevent duplicates. The synchronizer owns the
marked specification section and title. It preserves text outside that section,
comments, assignees, and ongoing execution states. It creates native sub-issue
links and blocking dependencies.

Changed specifications receive ``spec-changed``. Open affected tasks become
Blocked until a maintainer checks the change, clears the label, and deliberately
restores readiness. Closed issues are not silently reopened. Removed requirements
are reported for explicit review, and issues or dependencies are not silently
deleted. Renaming a stable ID is a migration, not a normal edit.

Project states
--------------

- **Backlog:** scope or implementation work has not been scheduled.
- **Ready:** scoped task whose dependencies and specification have been checked.
- **In progress:** claimed by a contributor or agent.
- **In review:** a pull request and validation evidence are available.
- **Blocked:** a dependency, changed specification, or decision prevents progress.
- **Done:** accepted work is complete.

Closing a task as completed makes it Done on the next synchronization. Closing
as not planned does not satisfy dependent tasks. A requirement becomes verified
only through a documentation change with acceptance evidence.

Launching a local agent
-----------------------

From the docs repository:

.. code-block:: bash

uv run --locked python scripts/work_issue.py https://github.com/PapyrusReader/docs/issues/NUMBER --launch

Use ``--check`` to validate eligibility without claiming the task.
Omit ``--launch`` to prepare the checkout and prompt for another local agent.
Use ``--directory`` to change the default checkout parent
``~/Projects/papyrus-tasks``.

The launcher checks the task's project status, readiness, source-change marker,
assignment, and dependency completion. It also checks that the pinned specification
files match the docs repository's ``development`` branch. Merge the specification
PR before launching its tasks. It creates the remote
``agent/issue-NUMBER`` branch as an atomic claim, assigns the issue to the current
GitHub user, and moves the task to In progress. It then clones an isolated checkout
from ``development`` and saves the prompt in that checkout's Git directory.

The optional launch opens an interactive Codex session with workspace-write
sandboxing and the user's configured model and authentication. It does not start
an unattended execution service. See `Codex CLI documentation
`_.

If preparation fails after claiming, the branch and assignment are retained so
another machine cannot silently start duplicate work. Inspect the branch and
checkout before releasing the claim. To retry from scratch, remove only an unused
claim branch, unassign the issue, and return it to Ready. Preserve any actual work.

Agents must read the owning repository's instructions and the linked contracts,
use pinned tools, and run the specified checks. Database tests require a distinct
test database and must not overlap. The launcher does not run those tests itself.
Agents open PRs targeting ``development`` and report test results and remaining
limitations. They do not merge, deploy, or mark requirements verified.

Pull requests and completion
----------------------------

Link the owning issue and covered requirement IDs in each PR. Use fully qualified
issue references when crossing repositories. GitHub closing keywords only take
effect when the PR reaches the repository's default branch, which is
``development`` for Papyrus components.

Preserve the existing release process: promote ``development`` to ``master`` with
a release PR and merge commit. Ordinary work does not bump versions or change
workspace submodule pointers solely to record a component PR.

After merging, record the acceptance evidence, close the implementation issue as
completed, and synchronize the project. Review the parent requirement's remaining
criteria before changing its status.

This client feature implements the device-folder portion of FR-2_6. It requires

Library workflow
----------------

**Library → Folders** uses the Library toolbar and page margins with responsive
table rows with Folder, Status, Books, Destination shelf and Last checked columns
and a contextual action. Books shows the number of associated books currently in
the library, without a repeated unit suffix.
The editable connection name sits above the source location. Native desktop
pickers supply the absolute path. Browser pickers expose only the selected
directory name. Rows and detail headers omit the subtitle when no actual path
is available. Narrow layouts reflow each row while keeping
its status, book count and action together. Upload counts remain separate. Mobile uses the Library floating action button. Empty libraries show
one connect action in the empty state.

Opening a folder uses a content-sized bottom sheet on desktop and mobile. Its
header groups the folder name, location and overflow menu. Status appears above
View books and Scan now. Compact properties show destination shelf, subfolders
and last successful check. Edit folder is in the header overflow menu. View books applies the
**Advanced filters → Source folders** facet. It uses the existing filter count
and Reset action, with no separate chip or additional row above the Library
filters. Multiple source folders combine with the other filter categories.

**Name** defaults to the selected folder name during setup and can be changed
in **Edit folder**, alongside recursion and destination shelf. The custom name
is profile-local and survives restarting or reconnecting. It does not rename
the source directory or change duplicate detection.
Changes require **Save changes**, apply to future discoveries and survive restart.
Edit opens above the folder details sheet. Cancel and Save return to those
details, with saved changes reflected immediately. Scan now runs without
dismissing the details sheet. Cancel leaves the saved preferences unchanged. Pause and Resume take effect
immediately from the sheet overflow menu. Deleted shelves show a recovery state
without blocking library imports. Secondary actions cover retry and file review.
Stop watching lives in the overflow menu and explains that imported books remain in the confirmation dialog.

**Add book → Connect folder** invokes the system picker immediately. The standard
bottom sheet stays over Library on desktop and mobile and combines preview with
configuration. The source location is a labeled read-only field, followed by
Name, destination shelf and recursion. Books found and Total size appear as
separate preview values, with file problems expandable only when present.
A short note appears only when manual selection is required. Canceling
releases the selected access reference and creates no connection. Empty folders
can be connected. A browser without persistent access displays **Import folder**
and explains that later additions require selecting it again.

Forms reuse the compact shared header, scrollable body, outlined Cancel and filled
primary action, theme tokens and motion policy. Enlarged text wraps actions, and
e-ink progress remains static. Progress indicators reserve their space in the
table, details and setup preview. Scanning is indeterminate. Importing shows
processed/total counts, the remaining count and a determinate bar, without
moving adjacent rows or controls. Completed attempts include duplicates and
failures, so progress is separate from the number of books added to the library. Folder operations do not show snackbars. Status and import counts remain in
the folder list and details. Action errors appear in the owning page or sheet.

Imported copies remain available when source files move or disappear. Watching
is add-only. Changed content offers Keep existing or Import as separate book.
Deleting a book records its fingerprint as excluded, including renamed copies.
Review files provides explicit reimport. Removing a shelf does not stop imports.

Client boundaries
-----------------

``DirectoryAccess`` owns selection, restored permission, incremental enumeration,
stat/read operations, optional events and grant release. Native adapters use
filesystem paths on Windows/Linux, persisted SAF tree permissions on Android,
and bookmarked, coordinated access on Apple platforms. Browsers use directory
handles stored in IndexedDB when supported, otherwise a one-time file selection.
Automatic scans verify permission without displaying permission prompts.

``FolderRepository`` stores local-only connections, observed files, jobs,
folder-book associations, exclusions, retired access grants and a renewable lease in a separate profile-scoped PowerSync SQLite
database. This database never connects to PowerSync. Account-cache resets do not
discard it. Paths and grants never enter book metadata or upload payloads.
Folder-book associations survive importing a changed source as a separate book.
Grant replacements commit before releasing the old permission, and failed release
work remains journaled for a later scan or restart.

``WatchedFolders`` owns lifecycle scheduling, reconciliation and UI state. Scans
run on activation/resume, manual requests and a 60-second timer. Filesystem
events are debounced for two seconds. Mobile and browser work requires an active
application. Desktop watching continues while the application is running.
Closed-app background services are outside this feature.

The coordinator processes one file at a time per profile. The lease prevents
competing local windows from processing jobs concurrently. Reconciliation reloads
persisted folder settings so another window cannot revive a stopped connection.
Hidden files, temporary downloads and symlinks are skipped. Enumeration does not
load book contents. A metadata-only discovery pass collects changed/new candidates
and recovery jobs before importing, fixing the batch total. Unchanged files
are reconciled without inflating progress, and a recovery job and its source
file count as one work item. Counters are transient and rebuilt after restart.
Stable size/modification information is checked before and
after reading, with SHA-256 used for exact-content identity. Native metadata and
hash processing use an isolate, and web processing uses the import worker and
asynchronous browser cryptography.
Providers may omit size or modification information. Unknown sizes are excluded
from preview totals, which are labeled Unknown or At least. Files without usable
timestamps use repeated observation and content hashing. Future timestamps do
not indefinitely postpone imports.

``LibraryFolderImportTarget`` captures ``BookImportSession``, repository ownership
and the media scope. Imports use preallocated UUIDs. The journal retains pending,
prepared and failed jobs across file copying, metadata persistence, shelf
assignment and media-queue submission. Recovery checks stored bytes and existing
books, preserving existing reading progress and retrying missing queue work.
These stores are not treated as one atomic transaction. Profile changes invalidate
work before another destination becomes active.
Journaled imports keep committed books and covers if upload-queue persistence
fails. Retrying repairs the queue without removing or replacing those books.
Explicit deletion cancels pending folder work for that book, and reimport uses a
new identity so a server deletion tombstone cannot discard the requested import.

Supported browser imports are EPUB/PDF. Native imports use the existing EPUB,
PDF, MOBI, AZW3, TXT, CBR and CBZ support. Reading in Papyrus currently supports
EPUB and PDF, which is distinct from metadata import support.

Offline web packaging
---------------------

After building the web client, run::

 python tools/prepare_web_offline.py app/build/web

The release packager runs this automatically during ``stamp-web``. It creates a
versioned manifest and stamps ``papyrus_service_worker.js``. The worker precaches
public application assets, reader runtimes and import dependencies. It never
caches authenticated API responses or user media. A partial download does not
replace the previous complete cache. Application updates activate after existing
tabs close.

Offline reopening requires a completed initial online installation. Browser
storage eviction and revoked permissions require recovery, and browser storage
is not permanent. Cloud-provider files must be downloaded before they can be
imported offline.

Validation and platform acceptance
----------------------------------

Automated coordinator tests cover read-only preview, initial imports, additions,
recursion, shelves, unchanged-file skipping, exact duplicates and renames,
changed-file choices, deletion exclusions, stable retry identities, staged-file
recovery, profile changes, permissions, pause, stop, shared leases and a
10,000-entry cancellable preview. Widget tests cover direct picker invocation,
confirmation and cancellation at mobile and desktop sizes, explicit preference
saves, profile changes, folder filtering, stable headers and enlarged e-ink text. Web tests cover
offline cache isolation and interrupted installation. These checks do not replace
operating-system or physical-device acceptance.

Before release, verify separately:

* Windows/Linux: native folder picker, new files, removable drive reconnect,
subfolders, unreadable entries and Linux reconciliation without recursive events.
* macOS: sandbox bookmark restoration after restart, revoked access, coordinated
 cloud-provider reads and filesystem notifications.
* Android: SAF tree grants after restart, restricted roots, revoked grants and
 provider files unavailable offline.
* iOS/iPadOS: folder picker, bookmark restoration and foreground catch-up with
 local and cloud-provider files.
* Browsers: persisted handles, explicit permission reconnection, fallback folder
selection, offline reopening, storage eviction and two competing tabs.
* Libraries: guest restart and clear, account import while offline, later metadata
and media upload, account-cache reset and profile changes during processing.
* Reading: open an imported EPUB/PDF offline, restart without duplicates, discover
a later addition and confirm that the source files are unchanged.

Run the existing two-client PowerSync integration harness against configured
test services for synchronization. Report actual device checks separately from
compilation, automated tests and integration-harness results.

Review verification, 2026-11-01
-------------------------------

The focused folder, import-commit, media-queue and repository tests pass, including
provider metadata omissions, future timestamps, failed grant replacement and
cleanup, deletion/profile races, expired leases and source-folder associations
after restart. Client formatting and analysis, Node web tests, Chrome transport
tests and offline-packaging tests pass.

PR preparation also validates a clean client checkout with the committed reader
pin and no local dependency override: all 152 focused folder, import, queue,
repository and library-provider tests pass, and analysis reports no issues.

* Web: release compilation passes. An isolated headless Chrome profile persisted
real directory handles in IndexedDB, reloaded the packaged Flutter application
with networking disabled, restored and enumerated the handle, and imported an
EPUB through the production worker. Source and imported SHA-256 hashes matched.
The picker was substituted with an OPFS directory handle, so this does not
establish OS picker or revoked-permission acceptance.
* Android: debug APK compilation passes. Grant-channel tests cover cursor cleanup
and unknown sizes. SAF providers, restricted roots and device restart still
 require physical-device acceptance.
* macOS: the ordinary debug build and live integration test pass. The Xcode
project and CocoaPods dependency targets now use the existing 12.0 minimum.
Both configurations include outgoing network entitlements. Bookmark and drive
 acceptance remain unrun.
* iOS/iPadOS: the ordinary debug simulator build passes with the installed Xcode
27.1. CocoaPods dependencies now honor the existing iOS 15.0 minimum. Debug
simulators select the host architecture, including Intel hosts, to avoid
 `Flutter issue 188461 `_.
Device and release architecture settings are unchanged, and the unsigned iOS
release build passes. Folder picker, bookmarks and cloud-provider behavior
 require device acceptance.
* Linux: all 76 focused folder tests pass in an isolated Ubuntu 24.04 x64
container using the pinned Flutter 3.41.2. This includes real filesystem
enumeration, recursion, filtering, source reads, symlink rejection and
unavailable roots. The release build passes. The clean build exposed a missing
LLVM linker dependency, now installed by the shared Linux setup script. A
ten-second headless launch stayed running, with container graphics/portal and
unavailable-keyring warnings. This does not establish keyring or picker
acceptance. Desktop picker and removable-drive acceptance remain unrun.
* Windows: the filesystem tests now use Windows path conventions and keep
non-symlink coverage enabled. Native execution remains pending on a Windows
runner. The installed Parallels service was unavailable, so no Windows build
 or physical-device acceptance is claimed.

The complete live two-client harness now passes: offline account folder import,
restart without duplication, queued upload after reconnecting, media visibility
on the second client, deletion and account isolation. The local test service was
upgraded from ``a8b9c0d1e234`` to the existing ``b9c0d1e2f345`` migration, restoring
the ``bookmarks.reader_locator`` column expected by the current server model.
No new migration or server code was needed.

Linux and Windows packaging workflows run the focused folder tests before
building. Linux now triggers for client code and test changes, as Windows already
did. Recursion, hidden/temporary file filtering, source reads and traversal tests
run on both systems. Only symlink-creation tests are skipped on Windows hosts
without configured symlink privileges. Workflow validation passes locally.

Generated design-review pages, captures, logs and copied fixtures were removed
from the workspace. Optional widget captures now write under the ignored
``client/app/build/folder-review`` directory. Temporary CocoaPods workspace
integration and its untracked macOS lockfile were removed. The tracked iOS lockfile
reflects the updated Podfile. The pre-existing local reader override is preserved.

User manual
===========

Papyrus manages physical and digital books, with a built-in EPUB/PDF reader.
Feature availability depends on the application version and platform.

Getting started
---------------

Use the `Papyrus client releases
`_ for available application
packages. The `client README
`_ describes installation and
platform details.

Choose **Continue offline** to use a guest library without an account. Your
books and library data are stored locally. Signing in opens a separate account
library. It does not transfer the guest library into that account.

Importing and organizing books
-------------------------------

Import book files through the library's import controls. EPUB and PDF can be
opened in the reader. Native metadata import also accepts several additional
formats, but importing a file does not mean its contents can be read in Papyrus.
The web file picker accepts EPUB and PDF.

Use shelves, tags, metadata editing, and library filters to organize books.
Physical books can be represented by metadata without a readable file.

Reading
-------

Open an EPUB or PDF from the library. Use the available reader controls for
navigation, appearance, and reading layout. Options vary with the file format.
Reading positions are saved by the application.

The reader currently supports reflowable EPUB and PDF. Fixed-layout EPUB and
DRM-protected content are not supported. Book-level notes, annotations, and
bookmarks should not be confused with selecting and highlighting text in the
reader, which remains unfinished.

Accessibility settings
----------------------

Open **Settings > Accessibility**. These preferences take effect immediately
and are stored on this device, shared across guest and signed-in profiles.

- **Interface text enlargement** adds 15%, 30%, 50%, or 100% to the system's
existing text scaling. **System default** adds no enlargement. The system's
nonlinear scaling curve is preserved. A live preview shows the result.
- **Increase contrast** follows the system when off and forces increased
contrast when on, in either light or dark mode. E-ink uses its own contrast
treatment, so this control is disabled while that appearance is selected.
- **Bold interface text** follows the system when off and adds bold interface
text when on, including editable fields and navigation.
- **Interface font** offers **System default** and **OpenDyslexic** with a live
preview. This is a personal reading preference, not a claim that a particular
font improves reading for every person with dyslexia.
- **Reduce animations** limits interface motion. System reduced motion is
always honored, and e-ink also reduces motion.

Additional interface text enlargement and bold text do not change embedded
reader text metrics. Reader controls retain system scaling and bold-text
settings, and book rendering retains the reader's own preferences. These
settings do not change books, saved positions, or reading preferences.

Accounts and offline access
---------------------------

An account connects a library to a Papyrus server for synchronization. Different
users and server profiles have separate libraries and cached media.

In **Settings > Account**, users can edit their display name and choose
a profile photo directly. **Save** applies both changes together. JPEG and PNG
photos up to 5 MB and 25 megapixels are supported. Photos are resized and image
metadata is removed before saving. In anonymous mode, the name and photo are
saved on this device without a network connection and survive app restarts.
They stay separate from signed-in profiles and are removed when the anonymous
account is deleted. Signed-in profile changes are saved to the account's server.
Email is shown for reference and cannot be edited here.

Books need to be available locally to read without a network connection.
Synchronization and online catalogs require connectivity. Full-library content
search is a product requirement and is not currently an available feature.

Local storage is not a substitute for an independent backup. Before uninstalling
the app or clearing browser storage, preserve any local-only files and data you
need to retain.

Account deletion and recovery
-----------------------------

Open **Settings > Account > Delete account**. Review the warning about the
30-day recovery period and choose **Delete account**. Your current signed-in session
authorizes the request without another password or Google sign-in. The receipt shows
the deletion date. Cancelling the dialog leaves the account unchanged.

Confirmation disables ordinary access and revokes all Papyrus sessions. Existing
short-lived PowerSync credentials expire within their configured lifetime and
cannot be renewed. Local libraries and cached files remain on your devices.
To recover, sign in normally before the deletion date. Papyrus will offer to keep
your account. Choose **Keep account** to restore access and open your library
immediately, without signing in again. Choosing **Not now**
leaves deletion scheduled. Sign-in alone never cancels deletion automatically.
When server email delivery is enabled, your verified email address receives a
deletion notice with the deadline, or a confirmation when you keep the account.

Deletion and recovery are also available without installing the app at the server's
``/v1/account-deletion`` URL (or its configured API prefix). After the deadline,
the server automatically deletes the account and its owned records, then removes
managed media and the account's local acquisition import directory. Files held by
external providers or download clients must be managed with those providers.
Storage failures are retried without restoring account access.

Automated database and media backups are not currently implemented. The planned
retention limit for future backups is 30 days after permanent deletion. Future
restore tooling must reapply deletions before serving restored data. Self-hosted
operators must publish any separate backup or exceptional-retention policy using
``ACCOUNT_DELETION_RETENTION_NOTICE``. This configuration changes the notice,
not backup behavior.

Troubleshooting
---------------

- If an imported file cannot be opened, check that it is a supported EPUB or PDF.
- If a book is unavailable offline, check whether its file has been downloaded.
- If the library appears different after signing in, check the active user and
server profile. The guest library is separate.
- If synchronization is unavailable, check the server address and connection.
Avoid clearing local data to troubleshoot unsynchronized changes.

Report reproducible application problems in the `client issue tracker
`_, including the application
version, platform, and steps to reproduce.

Technical specification
=======================

This site contains both current implementation guidance and product requirements.
Requirements and design diagrams describe intended behavior; they are not a list
of released capabilities. See :doc:`/implementation/technologies`,
:doc:`/design/server-architecture` and :doc:`/api/index` for the implemented stack
and generated HTTP contract. Current reading supports EPUB and PDF. The client
also supports metadata import for several additional formats and OPDS catalogs.

Overview
--------

Papyrus is an open-source application for reading and managing both physical and digital books. It provides a versatile, user-friendly system that makes reading comfortable and fun across Android, iOS, Web, Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux), and e-ink devices. Papyrus features an intuitive, familiar, modern UI with extensive customization options, unifying book organization, reading, note-taking, progress tracking, and personalized settings in a single application.

Project goals
-------------

1. **Cross-platform** - manage books seamlessly across all devices without relearning the UI.
2. **Integrated reader** - read uploaded books with extensive customization options.
3. **Flexible management** - organize books into shelves, categories, add tags, edit metadata and track physical books.
4. **Progress tracking** - track reading time, books read, and manage and complete goals.
5. **Storage flexibility** - choose between local (i.e., on device), self-hosted, or cloud storage provider for storing book files.
6. **Data ownership** - ability to export everything in open formats (e.g., JSON, CSV, ZIP).
7. **Extensible** - plugin system for metadata sources, storage, and reader features.
8. **Developer friendly** - public and documented API and SDKs, server self-hosting.

Target audience
