Hi there!, As background change on the modules was mostly a hack, not really supported by the app(still is like that I think) I didn't made anything to provide that functionality.
But not everything is lost: If you want to have a custom color for one module you can edit the .svg files directly, those are inside plugin folder/ res

I replaced the SVG file with a custom file while VCV Rack was running and added a 2ChMixer. But: no change :-)

You could add a new key-value pair for the background image in the “plugin.json” file.

Are there any build instructions?

Hi, you have to close and restart VCV Rack so it loads the plugins again, then you should see your modded background.

"You could add a new key-value pair for the background" this is one of the hacks I have seen, it involves more custom code behind to make it work, and as is not supported officially it can break things later... been bitten by that before, sorry.

I agree with you. The risk of having faulty software isn't worth it. Since I'm not a professional programmer, I'll take your advice.
